Book ACTA CHIRURGICA SCANDINAVICA 1922

Download or read book ACTA CHIRURGICA SCANDINAVICA 1922 written by Nordisk Kirurgisk Förening and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acta Chirurgica Scandinavica, 1922, Vol. 54 The patient was rather weak previous to the second operation and became worse after the operation. The systolic blood pressure was 155, but the hemoglobin determination was 90 with a normal value for the apparatus of 80. Unfortunately no hemoglobin reading was taken before the first operation, and the patients normal hemoglobin value was, therefore, not known. With regard to the great loss of fluid, which the patient had suffered during three preceeding days, the high hemoglobin reading was regarded as indicating a concentra tion of the blood. One could not say, however, that a pronounced state of shock existed. She was pale and the pulse was rapid but of a comparatively good quality, and the blood pressure was, as already mentioned, high. The general impression, however, was that she did not do well and with regard to the high hemoglobin reading an intravenous injection of gum sahne was considered advisable. The injection was started at 4 p. M. Or about 45 minutes after the operation had been finished. Five hundred cc. Of a 7 per cent solution of gum acacia in normal saline solution were allowed to run in intravenously during the course of 20 minutes. After the injection the blood pressure was 145 and the hemoglobin 80. The patient did quite well and her condition did not cause any immediate apprehension. At 5 p. M. Her condition suddenly declined. The pulse became small and very rapid, there was pronounced dyspnoe and tracheal ronchi. She became rapidly worse and died at p. M. Book excerpt: First Published in 1986. In this book the author seeks to demonstrate his believe that any credible view must grapple not only with human distinctiveness (e.g., learning capacity, language, rationality, and culture), but the dark sides of senseless violence and social disorder as well. Any such grappling with the dark side must necessarily confront our animal natures as well as our distinctly human natures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: o history of endocrinology can be written without reference N to Sir Humphry Davy Rolleston, whose monumental study of the subject appeared in 1936 under the modest subtitle: The Endocrine Organs in Health and Disease with an Historical Review. It was based on the author's Fitzpatrick Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1933 and 1934. The lectureship, which dates from 1901, is devoted to the History of Medicine. Rolleston's work as regards scholarship and delivery cannot be surpassed and will remain the solid basis for any further study. It is of interest to note that Rolleston gave the Fitzpatrick Lectures when he was 71 years of age and had his book published when he was 74. By that time he had achieved most of his professional aims and all the honours a distinguished medical career can offer (see Section II). He perceived clearly that endocrinology was "an enormous subject in a most active stage of growth", which "recently has received most valuable help from organic chemists, who have devoted much time to the elucidation of the structure, isolation and synthesis of the hormones". He remarked that the knowledge of endocrinology was expanding with extreme rapidity, and it has been suggested that in this respect it would appear to be itself influenced by a growth hormone. He continued: "Before 1890 there were comparatively few publications dealing with the ductless glands, but in 1913, A.

Book Historical Aspects of Pediatric Surgery

Download or read book Historical Aspects of Pediatric Surgery written by P. P. Rickham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.
