Book Out of the Gobi

Download or read book Out of the Gobi written by Weijian Shan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Janet Yellen Weijian Shan's Out of the Gobi is a powerful memoir and commentary that will be one of the most important books on China of our time, one with the potential to re-shape how Americans view China, and how the Chinese view life in America. Shan, a former hard laborer who is now one of Asia's best-known financiers, is thoughtful, observant, eloquent, and brutally honest, making him well-positioned to tell the story of a life that is a microcosm of modern China, and of how, improbably, that life became intertwined with America. Out of the Gobi draws a vivid picture of the raw human energy and the will to succeed against all odds. Shan only finished elementary school when Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution tore his country apart. He was a witness to the brutality and absurdity of Mao’s policies during one of the most tumultuous eras in China’s history. Exiled to the Gobi Desert at age 15 and denied schooling for 10 years, he endured untold hardships without ever giving up his dream for an education. Shan’s improbable journey, from the Gobi to the “People’s Republic of Berkeley” and far beyond, is a uniquely American success story – told with a splash of humor, deep insight and rich and engaging detail. This powerful and personal perspective on China and America will inform Americans' view of China, humanizing the country, while providing a rare view of America from the prism of a keen foreign observer who lived the American dream. Says former Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen: “Shan’s life provides a demonstration of what is possible when China and the United States come together, even by happenstance. It is not only Shan’s personal history that makes this book so interesting but also how the stories of China and America merge in just one moment in time to create an inspired individual so unique and driven, and so representative of the true sprits of both countries.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the Gobi desert in winter, adventurer Rob Lilwall sets out on an extraordinary six-month journey, walking almost 5000 kilometres across China. Along the way he and his cameraman Leon brave the toxic insides of China's longest road tunnel, explore desolate stretches of the Great Wall and endure interrogation by the Chinese police. As they walk on through the heart of China, the exuberant hospitality of cave dwellers, coal miners and desert nomads keeps them going, despite sub-zero blizzards and the treacherous terrain. Rob writes with humour and honesty about the hardships of the walk, reflecting on the nature of pilgrimage and the uncertainties of an adventuring career. He also gives a unique insight into life on the road amid the epic landscapes and rapidly industrialising cities of backwater China.

They were the first English women to cross the Gobi Desert after twenty years of working as missionaries in the Shansi province of China. This is the kind of travel book which is the result of 13 years of continous travel and thorough knowledge of the region. They describe the Chinese Inns, the monasteries, the archaeological sites, the abandoned cities and the life in the oasis towns. This book brings alive the Gobi Desert and shows how relevant it is still nowadays for those wanting to discover this fascinating part of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned historian “combines exhaustive research and accessible prose for this . . . definitive study” of the Mongol empire’s military practices (Publishers Weekly). The armies of the Mongol empire are one of the most successful, yet least understood, military forces in history. Often viewed as screaming throngs of horsemen who conquered by sheer force of numbers, they were in fact highly organized regiments who blindsided their opponents with innovative tactics and combat skills. Through the leadership of brilliant military strategists, they achieved the largest land empire ever established, stretching across Asia and into eastern Europe. In this pioneering study, historian Timothy May demonstrates how the Mongol military developed from a tribal levy into a disciplined and complex military organization. He describes the make-up of the Mongol army from its inception to the demise of the empire. With profiles of Mongol military leaders such as Chinggis Khan—also known as Genghis Khan—May shows how their strength, quality and versatility made them the pre-eminent warriors of their time.

Book Across Mongolian Plains a Naturalist s Account of China s Great Northwest

Download or read book Across Mongolian Plains a Naturalist s Account of China s Great Northwest written by Roy Chapman Andrews and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 1921-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The romantic story of the Mongols and their achievements has been written so completely that it is unnecessary to repeat it here even though it is as fascinating as a tale from the Arabian Nights. The present status of the country, however, is but little known to the western world. In a few words I will endeavor to sketch the recent political developments, some of which occurred while we were in Mongolia. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the great Genghiz Khan and his illustrious successor Kublai Khan "almost in a night" erected the greatest empire the world has ever seen. Not only did they conquer all of Asia, but they advanced in Europe as far as the Dnieper leaving behind a trail of blood and slaughter. All Europe rose against them, but what could not be accomplished by force of arms was wrought in the Mongols themselves by an excess of luxury. In their victorious advance great stores of treasure fell into their hands and they gave themselves to a life of ease and indulgence. By nature the Mongols were hard riding, hard living warriors, accustomed to privation and fatigue. The poison of luxury ate into the very fibers of their being and gradually they lost the characteristics which had made them great. The ruin of the race was completed by the introduction of Lamaism, a religion which carries only moral destruction where it enters, and eventually the Mongols passed under the rule of the once conquered Chinese and then under the Manchus. Until the overthrow of the Manchu regime in China in 1911, and the establishment of the present republic, there were no particularly significant events in Mongolian history. But at that time the Russians, wishing to create a buffer state between themselves and China as well as to obtain special commercial privileges in Mongolia, aided the Mongols in rebellion, furnished them with arms and ammunition and with officers to train their men.

Book The Big Game of Central and Western China

Download or read book The Big Game of Central and Western China written by Harold Frank Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of Central and Western China: Being an Account of a Journey From Shanghai to London Overland Across the Gobi Desert Early in the spring of 1911 Mr. George Fenwick Owen invited me to accompany him on an expedition into the interior of China, his aim being to secure specimens of the takin (Budorcas bedfordi), a rare animal about which little is on record, a collection of small mammals for the British Museum, and any other species of big game which we might chance to encounter. We accordingly left Liverpool in May that same year, and arrived back in England in April 1912. In the following pages I have endeavoured to convey to those who do me the honour of reading this book some idea of a country which has been but seldom visited by sportsmen, and the strange people and still stranger animals to be found there. Our original intention, having secured the takin, was to hunt in the mountains in Koko Nor, and to return home through Szechuan and the valley of the Yangtse-kiang. This idea we were reluctantly compelled, owing to the outbreak of the Revolution, to abandon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
