Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Times in Texas It is due to our colored citizens to say, that in depicting the character of Cudjo, I had no intention whatever to ridi cule or cast a slur upon them. I have merely attempted to describe a type of the race common amongst them in ante bellum days, and which in all probability would have been as common among any other race of people, if like them they had been for so long a time subjected to the demoral izing influences of ignorance and a degrading servitude. Now that they have been liberated by the arbitrament of the sword, and can avail themselves of all their rights as free citizens of our common country, I hope (and believe from the advances they have already made) that the time will soon come when they will place themselves upon a level with those who enjoyed all the advantages of freedom whilst they were in a state of slavery. Book BK OF TEXAS CLASSIC REPRINT

Download or read book BK OF TEXAS CLASSIC REPRINT written by Harry Yandell Benedict and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Texas Written for the general reader, this book makes no pre tence to avoid colloquialisms or to be serious throughout. Jokes and stories that throw light upon Texas and her people have been freely inserted. But nothing of a humorous avor has been put in for its own sake only, because, as far as may be accomplished within the narrow compass of a single volume, an earnest effort has here been made to describe Texas. As a consequence, the following pages abound in statements of fact. This book is less than a scientific and detailed treatise; on the other hand, let us hope, it is more than a collection of random remarks made by superficial and facetious observers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Liberty of Texas For the Liberty of Texas is a tale complete in itself, but it forms the first of a line of three volumes to be known under the general title of the Mexican War Series. Primarily the struggle of the Texans for freedom did not form a part of our war with Mexico, yet this struggle led up directly to the greater war to follow, and it is probably a fact that, had the people of Texas not at first accomplished their freedom, there would have been no war between the two larger republics. Download or read book Under Six Flags the Story of Texas Classic Reprint written by M. E. M. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Six Flags, the Story of Texas But the history of Texas is far more than a romantic legend. It is a record of bold conceptions and bolder deeds the story of the discoverer penetrating unknown wildernesses; of the pioneer matching his strength against the savage of the colo nist struggling for his freedom and his rights. It is the chronicle of the birth of a people; the history of the rise and progress of a great State. I have tried in these simple readings so to arrange the salient points of a drama of two centuries as to present a consistent whole. And I shall be happy if I shall succeed in awakening in the reader somewhat of the interest in Texas history which has inspired this work. It was one of the older hotels of San Antonio, much sought by Northern tourists on account of that same inner garden, around which the big building stretched itself. The rooms opening on to it had vine-covered balconies, and, looking down from them into the tropical growth of palms and' banana trees and roses, one felt that it was summer time, no matter what the calendar said. Book The Annexation of Texas Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Annexation of Texas Classic Reprint written by Justin Harvey Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annexation of Texas The footnotes cover all the statements of the text except a few matters of common knowledge, but of course a fact once proved is not proved again. To some readers the number of references will seem unnecessarily great, and so they appear to the author himself. But as almost every foot of the ground is controversial, the per centage that could safely be omitted is rather small, and the saving would hardly justify the abandonment of a complete and logical system for one of the opposite character. In order not to fill the page with annoying figures, the references - standing in the order of the statements they support - are grouped by paragraphs, and an indication of the bearing of the reference is given when this is not obvious. Naturally in some cases a citation confirms more than a single sentence, and it should be remembered, too, that for reasons of convenience the first page of a document is the one specified unless there is a particular occasion for doing otherwise. To carry such a body of figures with perfect accuracy through the processes of compiling, revising, copying and printing is extremely difficult, especially as the author's attention is liable to be diverted momen tarily from the mathematics to the meaning of the citation; but it can be said that unsparing pains have been taken to ensure correct ness, and that a trained historical worker has gone over the entire work of verification independently. While engaged on this investigation at the Public Record Office, London, the author was so fortunate as to have for neighbor Dr. Ephraim Douglass Adams, the fruit of whose researches, covering to a small extent the same ground as this volume, has. Recently been offered to the public. As it fell to the present writer in another place to view that monograph, British Interests and Activities in Texas, in the manner which it invited by describing itself as purely technical, he will only say here - though it does not need to be said - that anything coming from such a source deserves very care ful attention, and express the hope that all concerned with Texan history will read the book. One cannot help wishing that Professor Adams's investigations had extended to the Texan, Mexican and American archives. Mention must also be made of an interesting and valuable work by Dr. Jesse S. Reeves, entitled American Diplo macy nnder Tyler and Polk, based largely on documents which he as well as the present writer was permitted to examine at the Stateviii preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Pioneer Days in Texas Friends, early pioneers and settlers and a few remaining schoolmates of our log cabin school days: I write these lines in commemoration of the days of long ago; the days that were spent in preparation for the glorious results which have come to Texas and her people. The younger gen eration cannot know nor understand the dangers, nor the inconveniences, that beset us in the early days; neither can they comprehend how tedious was the slow and labored journeys we had to make to go from place to place. N ow it is an easy task to travel two or three hundred miles a day, and at little cost, but in those days when we had to pick our way through vast country expanses and find our road the best we could as we went along, it was a tedious and expensive journey, both because of expenditure of energy and of means as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Rule: A Tale of Texas In the year 18 - a comparatively small village, situated on a high bluff, overlooked the Mississippi river. Having no railroad facilities, it derived its commercial prosperity from trade and traffic carried on through the agency of steamboats that plied up and down the "Father of Waters" Its inhabitants consisted of a few hundred people devoted mostly to mercantile pursuits. They were the medium of communication between the hunters and farmers of the sparsely settled country that lay in the rear, and the steamboat men, whose lives were spent in the navigation of the river. In those days no one could foresee the destiny of even the smallest village. The physical aspects of the site might seem rather to repel than invite immigration. But the demands of trade and civilization overcome all obstacles to progress, except those that bid invincible defiance to all human energy. Download or read book A New History of Texas Classic Reprint written by Edward Stiff and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Texas The great and increasing emigration to Texas, taken in connection with her present position, former history and prospective career, were the primary causes which induced the author to compile a volume, entitled the History of Texas, yet, in doing so, he has embodied other and dissimilar information, as well as such as will safely conduct emigrants to favorable localities, and in a cheap way acquaint them with things necessary to be known - and he has supplied such data as will enable those thinking of a removal, to knowingly decide if it is expedient to seek a home in the new Republic or not. Desiring at all times to pursue the quiet and retired walks of private life, the author of the following work would not have made his travels in Texas the leading subject of a publication, had not her vast and luxuriant plains and other more romantic scenery, first suggested the idea - an idea that has grown in strength every day, since the effect of combined causes, not the least among which may be mentioned the fact of the entire absence of any work on the subject, from which can be extracted such information as comes home to the every day pursuits of men, or one that has been written with that independence of thought, and strict impartiality, which should ever be the aim and end of the Historian who aspires to an enduring and honorable fame, when he shall sleep with his Fathers.
