Book Pacific Coast History How the West Was Really Won

Download or read book Pacific Coast History How the West Was Really Won written by J. P. Munro-Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered by Europeans, Explored by Americans, And the Native Americans Who Already Lived There. Original published in 1885 as ---Washington Territory-1885-------, Parsons Publishing thought it important enough to republished it in 1985 for the Washington State Centennial. This edition is for the new eBook reader in the 21st century who would find it otherwise difficult to read by today's standards. It has been edited of errors and brought up to today's verbal usages with added maps and illustrations not available in the original. It has also been edited to give credit to the Indian's history where credit was due. The fundamental idea behind the book was to provide a retelling of the progress of westward migration and development of America. It was inspired by other books by the author, B.F. Alley, which he wrote for other communities in California and expanded for the Oregon and Washington Territory by himself and J.P. Munro-Fraser, an ex-senator of the Oregon Legislator. And as stated by W.H. Grey: the history of our lands a hundred years hence will be more thoroughly appreciated than at present. It stands alone as an epic story of the Westward Movement in America. Written shortly after many of the events took place, the writers were able to ascertain the veracity of their statements. In the 19th century, Manifest Destiny was the widely held belief in the United States that American settlers were destined to expand throughout the continent. Historians have for the most part agreed that there are three basic themes to Manifest Destiny:The special virtues of the American people and their institutions;America's mission to redeem and remake the west in the image of agrarian America; An irresistible destiny to accomplish this essential duty. As a research tool for the student of history or as a narrative of the winning of the west, this book tells the reader in as few words as possible names, dates and locations, with maps and historical notes added, how our western shores and inlands were founded, fought for and settled.

Book excerpt: After the Civil War, the building of the transcontinental railroad was the nineteenth century's most transformative event. Beginning in 1842 with a visionary's dream to span the continent with twin bands of iron, Empire Express captures three dramatic decades in which the United States effectively doubled in size, fought three wars, and began to discover a new national identity. From self--made entrepreneurs such as the Union Pacific's Thomas Durant and era--defining figures such as President Lincoln to the thousands of laborers whose backbreaking work made the railroad possible, this extraordinary narrative summons an astonishing array of voices to give new dimension not only to this epic endeavor but also to the culture, political struggles, and social conflicts of an unforgettable period in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Columbia University's 2024 Bancroft Prize in American History 2024 Spur Award Winner Named a Best Civil War Book of 2023 by Civil War Monitor In Continental Reckoning renowned historian Elliott West presents a sweeping narrative of the American West and its vital role in the transformation of the nation. In the 1840s, by which time the United States had expanded to the Pacific, what would become the West was home to numerous vibrant Native cultures and vague claims by other nations. Thirty years later it was organized into states and territories and bound into the nation and world by an infrastructure of rails, telegraph wires, and roads and by a racial and ethnic order, with its Indigenous peoples largely dispossessed and confined to reservations. Unprecedented exploration uncovered the West's extraordinary resources, beginning with the discovery of gold in California within days of the United States acquiring the territory following the Mexican-American War. As those resources were developed, often by the most modern methods and through modern corporate enterprise, half of the contiguous United States was physically transformed. Continental Reckoning guides the reader through the rippling, multiplying changes wrought in the western half of the country, arguing that these changes should be given equal billing with the Civil War in this crucial transition of national life. As the West was acquired, integrated into the nation, and made over physically and culturally, the United States shifted onto a course of accelerated economic growth, a racial reordering and redefinition of citizenship, engagement with global revolutions of science and technology, and invigorated involvement with the larger world. The creation of the West and the emergence of modern America were intimately related. Neither can be understood without the other. With masterful prose and a critical eye, West presents a fresh approach to the dawn of the American West, one of the most pivotal periods of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West, especially the Intermountain states, ranks among the whitest places in America, but this fact obscures the more complicated history of racial diversity in the region. In Making the White Man’s West, author Jason E. Pierce argues that since the time of the Louisiana Purchase, the American West has been a racially contested space. Using a nuanced theory of historical “whiteness,” he examines why and how Anglo-Americans dominated the region for a 120-year period. In the early nineteenth century, critics like Zebulon Pike and Washington Irving viewed the West as a “dumping ground” for free blacks and Native Americans, a place where they could be segregated from the white communities east of the Mississippi River. But as immigrant populations and industrialization took hold in the East, white Americans began to view the West as a “refuge for real whites.” The West had the most diverse population in the nation with substantial numbers of American Indians, Hispanics, and Asians, but Anglo-Americans could control these mostly disenfranchised peoples and enjoy the privileges of power while celebrating their presence as providing a unique regional character. From this came the belief in a White Man’s West, a place ideally suited for “real” Americans in the face of changing world. The first comprehensive study to examine the construction of white racial identity in the West, Making the White Man’s West shows how these two visions of the West—as a racially diverse holding cell and a white refuge—shaped the history of the region and influenced a variety of contemporary social issues in the West today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftershocks of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor were felt keenly all over America—the war in Europe had hit home. But nowhere was American life more immediately disrupted than on the West Coast, where people lived in certain fear of more Japanese attacks. From that day until the end of the war, a dizzying mix of battle preparedness and rampant paranoia swept the states. Japanese immigrants were herded into internment camps. Factories were camouflaged to look like small towns. The Rose Bowl was moved to North Carolina. Airport runways were so well hidden even American pilots couldn't find them. There was panic on the Pacific coast: the Japanese were coming.
