Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: The first publication in a multivolume series on the history of the acquisition of major weapon systems by the Department of Defense, author Elliott Converse presents a meticulously researched overview of changes in acquisition policies, organizations, and processes within the United States military establishment during the decade and a half following World War II. Many of the changes that shaped the nature and course of weapons research and development, production, and contracting through the end of the century were instituted between 1945 and 1960; many of the problems that have repeatedly challenged defense policymakers and acquisition professionals also first surfaced during these years. This study is the first to combine the histories of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the military services into one account. The volume is organized chronologically, with individual chapters addressing the roles of OSD, the Army, Navy and Air Force in two distinct periods.

Book Structured Finance and Insurance

Download or read book Structured Finance and Insurance written by Christopher L. Culp and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Structured Finance & Insurance "More and more each year, the modern corporation must decide what risks to keep and what risks to shed to remain competitive and to maximize its value for the capital employed. Culp explains the theory and practice of risk transfer through either balance sheet mechanism such as structured finance, derivative transactions, or insurance. Equity is expensive and risk transfer is expensive. As understanding grows, and, as a result, costs continue to fall, ART will continue to replace equity as the means to cushion knowable risks. This book enhances our understanding of ART." --Myron S. Scholes, Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University "A must-read for everyone offering structured finance as a business, and arguably even more valuable to any one expected to pay for such service." --Norbert Johanning, Managing Director, DaimlerChrysler Financial Services "Culp's latest book provides a comprehensive account of the most important financing and risk management innovations in both insurance and capital markets. And it does so by fitting these innovative solutions and products into a single, unified theory of financial markets that integrates the once largely separate disciplines of insurance and risk management with the current theory and practice of corporate finance." --Don Chew, Editor, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance (a Morgan Stanley publication) "This exciting book is a comprehensive read on alternative insurance solutions available to corporations. It focuses on the real benefits, economical and practical, of alternatives such as captives, rent-a-captive, and mutuals. An excellent introduction to the very complex field of alternative risk transfer (ART)." --Paul Wohrmann, PhD, Head of the Center of Excellence ART and member of theExecutive Management of Global Corporate in Europe, Zurich Financial Services "Structured Finance and Insurance transcends Silos to reach the Enterprise Mountaintop. Culp superbly details integrated, captive, multiple triggers and capital market products, and provides the architectural blueprints for enterprise risk innovation." --Paul Wagner, Director, Risk Management, AGL Resources Inc.

Book South Asia s Nuclear Security

Download or read book South Asia s Nuclear Security written by Bhumitra Chakma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is often viewed as a potential nuclear flashpoint and a probable source of nuclear terrorism. But, how valid are such perceptions? This book seeks to address this question and assesses the region’s nuclear security from two principal standpoints. First, it evaluates the robustness of the Indo-Pakistani mutual deterrence by analysing the strength and weaknesses of the competing arguments regarding the issue. It also analyses the causes and consequences of nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan, the nature of deterrence structure in the region and the challenges of confidence building and arms control between the two countries in order to assess the robustness of South Asia’s nuclear deterrence. Second, it assesses the safety and security of the nuclear assets and nuclear infrastructure of India and Pakistan. The author holds that the debate on South Asia’s nuclear security is largely misplaced because the optimists tend to overemphasise the stabilising effects of nuclear weapons and the pessimists are too alarmists. It is argued that while the risks of nuclear weapons are significant, it is unlikely that India and Pakistan will give up their nuclear arsenals in the foreseeable future. Therefore, what needs to happen is that while nuclear elimination should be the long-term goal, in the interim years the two countries need to pursue minimum deterrence policies to reduce the likelihood of deterrence failure and the possibility of obtaining fissile materials by non-state actors.

Book The Geography of Genocide

Download or read book The Geography of Genocide written by Allan D. Cooper and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geography of Genocide offers a unique analysis of over sixty genocides in world history, explaining why genocides only occur in territorial interiors and never originate from cosmopolitan urban centers. This study explores why genocides tend to result from emasculating political defeats experienced by perpetrator groups and examines whether such extreme political violence is the product of a masculine identity crisis. Author Allan D. Cooper notes that genocides are most often organized and implemented by individuals who have experienced traumatic childhood events involving the abandonment or abuse by their father. Although genocides target religious groups, nations, races or ethnic groups, these identity structures are rarely at the heart of the war crimes that ensue. Cooper integrates research derived from the study of serial killing and rape to show certain commonalities with the phenomenon of genocide. The Geography of Genocide presents various strategies for responding to genocide and introduces Cooper's groundbreaking alternatives for ultimately inhibiting the occurrence of genocide.

Book Delivering On The Promise

Download or read book Delivering On The Promise written by Brian S. Friedman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past couple of decades, management styles have evolved from strategic planning to total quality management to reengineering. Now in the newest and most cost effective trend to hit the boardrooms, there is a concentrated effort to view employment not as a perishible resource to be consumed but as a valuable commodity to be developed. While research shows that investments in capital result in higher returns to shareholders, the question is how should these investments be made, and how can returns on these investments be measured? DELIVERING ON THE PROMISE reveals Arthur Andersen's proprietry, technically based methodology - called The Five Square Approach - that will enable any manager to measure, manage and leverage human capital. Drawing on case-studies and research, this book is for any business manager who wants to evaluate and improve the current worth of their company's human resources.
