Book Early Child Cantonese

Download or read book Early Child Cantonese written by Shek Tse and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first publication on record that systematically and comprehensively addresses the acquisition and development of Cantonese in early childhood. It draws upon evidence from up-to-date reviews of associated literature, on the outcomes of numerous research studies conducted by the authors and on the outcomes of an in-depth study of the largest corpus of early childhood Cantonese. To supplement and illuminate published trends in the literature, carefully gathered reliable and valid empirical data are critically scrutinized. The evidence is used to clarify and examine theoretical assumptions and to outline putative developmental trends in early childhood Cantonese pragmatics.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Negation

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Negation written by Viviane Déprez and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, international experts in negation provide a comprehensive overview of cross-linguistic and philosophical research in the field, as well as accounts of more recent results from experimental linguistics, psycholinguistics, and neuroscience. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary approach to a range of fundamental questions ranging from why negation displays so many distinct linguistic forms to how prosody and gesture participate in the interpretation of negative utterances. Following an introduction from the editors, the chapters are arranged in eight parts that explore, respectively, the fundamentals of negation; issues in syntax; the syntax-semantics interface; semantics and pragmatics; negative dependencies; synchronic and diachronic variation; the emergence and acquisition of negation; and experimental investigations of negation. The volume will be an essential reference for students and researchers across a wide range of disciplines, and will facilitate further interdisciplinary work in the field.

Book The Expression of Negation

Download or read book The Expression of Negation written by Laurence R. Horn and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negation is a sine qua non of every human language but is absent from otherwise complex systems of animal communication. In many ways, it is negation that makes us human, imbuing us with the capacity to deny, to contradict, to misrepresent, to lie, and to convey irony. The apparent simplicity of logical negation as a one-place operator that toggles truth and falsity belies the intricate complexity of the expression of negation in natural language. Not only do we find negative adverbs, verbs, copulas, quantifiers, and affixes, but the interaction of negation with other operators (including multiple iterations of negation itself) can be exceedingly complex to describe, extending (as first detailed by Otto Jespersen) to negative concord, negative incorporation, and the widespread occurrence of negative polarity items whose distribution is subject to principles of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The chapters in this book survey the patterning of negative utterances in natural languages, spanning such foundational issues as how negative sentences are realized cross-linguistically and how that realization tends to change over time, how negation is acquired by children, how it is processed by adults, and how its expression changes over time. Specific chapters offer focused empirical studies of negative polarity, pleonastic negation, and negative/quantifier scope interaction, as well as detailed examinations of the form and function of sentential negation in modern Romance languages and Classical Japanese.

Book Phonological Acquisition and Phonological Theory

Download or read book Phonological Acquisition and Phonological Theory written by John Archibald and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the work currently conducted within the framework of Universal Grammar and language learnability focuses on the acquisition of syntax. However, the learnability issues are just as applicable to the domain of phonology. This volume is the first to gather research that assumes a sophisticated phonological framework and considers the implications of this framework for language acquisition -- both first and second. As such, this book truly deals with phonological acquisition rather than phonetic acquisition.

Book Understanding Development and Disorder in Cantonese using Language Sample Analysis

Download or read book Understanding Development and Disorder in Cantonese using Language Sample Analysis written by Anita Mei-Yin Wong and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Development and Disorder in Cantonese using Language Sample Analysis brings together 20 years of research on typical development and Development Language Disorder (DLD) in Cantonese. This book begins with a succinct overview of Cantonese, which is a popular variety of Chinese, a Sino-Tibetan language. The second chapter describes a new framework of the Grammatical Analysis of Cantonese Samples (GACS), which is developed on the basis of functionalist and usage-based theories of language and language development. The third chapter reports on a quantitative analysis, as well as a qualitative description of the development of Cantonese in preschool children using the GACS framework. The book ends with a chapter that presents the linguistic profile of a Cantonese-speaking child with DLD. It also illustrates how to make decisions on intervention targets on the basis of the grammatical and error analysis. The book provides a timely and important addition to the typological diversity of studies in both child language development and disorder. This book is informative for students and practitioners of speech and language therapy, students in early childhood education and Chinese linguistics and researchers in child language development and disorders.
