Book Patron Driven Acquisitions

Download or read book Patron Driven Acquisitions written by Judith M. Nixon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, some academic libraries have been purchasing, rather than borrowing, recently published books requested by their patrons through interlibrary loan. These books had one circulation guaranteed and so appealed to librarians who were concerned about the large percentage of books selected and purchased by librarians but never checked out by their patrons. Early assessments of the projects indicated that patrons selected quality books that in many cases were cross disciplinary and covered emerging areas of scholarly interest. However, now we have a significant database of the ILL purchase records to compare these titles with books selected through normal methods. The projects described in this book present a powerful argument for involving patrons in the book selection process. This book looks at patron-driven acquisitions for printed books at Purdue University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Illinois, as well as exploring new programs that allow patrons to select e-books or participate in other innovative ways in building the library collections. This book was published as a special issue of Collection Management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rethinking Home is pioneering scholarship at its best. Amato makes his case for a new local history combining academic sophistication with a deft human touch, that can provide a new perspective on the way in which humans have interacted with their natural and created environments over the past 150 years. Amato’s eloquent plea for scholars to rethink the intricate relationships between home, place, nation, and world is one that cannot be ignored."—Richard O. Davies, University Foundation Professor, University of Nevada "Local history is the stepchild of our profession. Joseph Amato has emancipated Cinderella. Innovative and engaging, his passion for particulars brings life to people and places whose interest we have underrated far too long; and provides a good read beside."—Eugen Weber Department of History, UCLA "In the best Thoreauvian sense, Joseph Amato masterfully synthesizes and eloquently presents two decades of practicing and thinking deeply about local history. How pleasantly odd, how wonderful that a book on local history should be so rousing, so encouraging, so redemptive! Rethinking Home is a veritable call to arms for those of us who care deeply about the special, the distinctive character of our own home places, our own locales."—Bradley P. Dean, Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods

Book Publications of the Buffalo Historical Society

Download or read book Publications of the Buffalo Historical Society written by Frank H. Severance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Buffalo Historical Society, Vol. 24 The leading paper in this volume, "The History of the Buffalo Creek Reservation", by Frederick Houghton, will commend itself to students of the history of this region as an exceptionally thorough, comprehensive review of natural conditions, aboriginal occupancy and gradual acquisition by white men, which form the history of this tract of land, now in part included in the City of Buffalo. It is a chapter of local history which has not heretofore been written. Our readers are fortunate in that it has now been prepared by so competent a student as Mr. Houghton. An unusually prominent place is given in this volume to reports of the proceedings of the Society. The presentation of the Bishop Walker memorial, and other recent events in the history of the Society, we were unable to include in the preceding volume of this series, which was wholly devoted to one historical study - Mr. A. C. Parker's "Life of Gen. Ely S. Parker." The full report of that presentation, with its tributes to the memory of Bishop Walker, and with the accounts of the varied Society activities which follow, are by no means the least important feature of this volume.
