Book excerpt: A new approach to the theory of sound scattering, diffraction and propagation in slightly compressible media containing moving inhomogeneities is presented. The main concept of this approach lies in enriching the acoustic properties of the media by the consideration of the inhomogeneities motion together with the contribution of media flow generated by them. Both factors are conventionally ignored in classic wave scattering theory. Inhomogeneous media are usually presented as continuous with supposed local statistical properties distribution while structural specifics and motion of medium components are ignored being excused by their extremely small Mach numbers. However, this approximation is valid for electromagnetic wave scattering only. The analogy between sound and electromagnetic wave propagation in inhomogeneous moving media fails in acoustics of media with moving inhomogeneities. The presented conclusions are based on analytical solutions of sound scattering problems for the Lighthill equation related to a body moving in ideal or viscous media with an arbitrary relationship between sound wavelength and body dimension. The contribution of the ambient flow around moving scatterer to total sound scattering is shown to be at least comparable to the scatterer body motion contribution. Under certain conditions, such as for small moving particles in viscous media, the particle body contribution to scattering as a whole could be safely ignored with respect to the ambient flow contribution. As a result the classic Rayleigh law is to be modified and a few fundamental relationships substituting it are derived. The obtained results are important for a wide range of acoustic problems arising in moving inhomogeneous media, from sound scattering in atmosphere or ocean to sound decay in colloid particle solutions. The consideration of the contribution of the ambient flow to the sound diffraction by a large moving body is shown to be necessary as well. This is why a lot of known diffraction problems, for example such that are used for underwater acoustic system efficiency evaluation should be revised. A few examples of our results are: sound decay predictions in atmospheric precipitation, in turbulent media and in colloid solution of suspended particles involved in Brownian motion. Moreover, some experimental data that were unexplained up to this point are now clarified in light of this new theory. At the same time, we show the necessity of performing additional experiments based on theory predictions.

Taken together, these two monographs present a systematic exposition of the theory of sound propagation in inhomogeneous media, which starts from first principles and includes recent results. More advanced topics are considered in this second volume. Although the theory of wave beams and fields of localized sources is more sophisticated than the theory of quasi-plane waves, it embraces a much wider range of interesting problems that are also important for applications. We exploit the results of Acoustics of Layered Media I, as long as it is expedient to consider sound fields as a superposition of plane or quasi-plane waves. However, the knowledgeable reader will view this book as self-contained. Similar topics have been treated in the book by L. M. Brekhovskikh, Waves in Layered Media, the English version of the second edition of which was published by Academic Press in 1980. Since Waves in Layered Media became very popular, we have tried here to retain its spirit. However, the majority of this text is devoted to new material which reflects the significant progress of the theory during recent years. In particular, acoustic fields in a moving fluid are considered and much attention is paid to sound propagation in range dependent environments, which is currently on the leading edge of research activities.

Brek hovskikh, Waves in Layered Media, the English version of the second edition of which was published by Academic Press in 1980. Due to progress in experimental and computer technology it has become possible to analyze the influence of factors such as medium motion and density stratification upon the propagation of sound waves. Much attention has been paid to propagation theory in near-stratified media, Le. , media with small deviations from strict stratification. Interesting results have also been obtained in the fields of acoustics which had been previously considered to be "completely" developed. For these reasons, and also because of the inflow of researchers from the related fields of physics and mathematics, the circle of persons and research groups engaged in the study of sound propagation has rather expanded. Therefore, the appearance of a new summary review of the field of acoustics of layered media has become highly desirable. Since Waves in Layered Media became quite popular, we have tried to retain its positive features and general structure.
