Book excerpt: Acoustic emission (AE) techniques have successfully been used for assuring the structural integrity of large rocket motorcases since 1963, and their uses have expanded to ever larger structures, especially as structural health monitoring (SHM) of large structures has become the most urgent task for engineering communities around the world. The needs for advanced AE monitoring methods are felt keenly by those dealing with aging infrastructures. Many publications have appeared covering various aspects of AE techniques, but documentation of actual applications of AE techniques has been mostly limited to reports of successful results without technical details that allow objective evaluation of the results. There are some exceptions in the literature. In this Special Issue of the Acoustics section of Applied Sciences, we seek contributions covering these exceptions cited here. Here, we seek contributions describing case histories of AE applications to large structures that have achieved the goals of SHM by providing adequate technical information supporting the success stories. Book excerpt: Non-destructive testing methods and applications have become of increasing interest due to the worldwide aging and deteriorating infrastructure network. In the field of Civil Engineering, bridges and bridge components as well as non-structural elements such as roadway pavements for example, are affected. In particular, the Acoustic Emission (AE) technique offers the unique opportunity to monitor infrastructure components in real-time and detect sudden changes in the integrity of the monitored element. The principle is that dynamic input sources cause a stress wave to form, travel through the body, and create a transient surface displacement that can be recorded by piezo-electric sensors located on the surface. Commonly, analysis methods of purely qualitative nature are used to estimate the current condition or make predictions on the future state of a monitored component. Using quantitative analysis methods, source locations and characteristics can be deduced, similarly to the case for earthquake sources. If properly configured, crack formation and propagation can hence be quantified with this technique. The research work presented in this dissertation, however, goes past commonly found AE applications. Three novel applications have been developed: (1) a new prospective detection tool was discovered in the field of Transportation Engineering where AE sensors were employed to identify vehicles equipped with studded tires passing over bridges. Such vehicles cause costly damage each year to the roadway infrastructure network and this tool would enable gathering statistical data or enforcing legal dates for the use of studded tires. Load conditions of two full-scale laboratory bridge girders were estimated analyzing AE data collected from applied service-level loads using an earthquake prediction method called b-value analysis (2). It was found that this analysis method may assist in estimating the operating load conditions of in-service bridges. Finally (3), a novel framework for the development of a probabilistic stress wave source location algorithm based on Bayesian analysis methods is proposed. Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation was employed to estimate model parameters and predict source locations in full probabilistic form. Because variability in the materials and errors in the model can be included, a more accurate solution is available.

Book excerpt: Three reports were produced from research sponsored by the Oregon Department of Transportation on acoustic emission (AE). The first describes the evaluation of AE techniques applied to two reinforced concrete (RC) bridge girders, which were loaded to mimic in-service conditions. The main goal was to get a thorough understanding of how AE methods can be used with RC and in what way these methods can assist in maintaining the states aging RC deck girder bridges. Recommended settings for data acquisition and processing were evaluated. In addition to the complex full-scale beam components, studies were performed on smaller test specimens that improved understanding of stress wave propagation through reinforced concrete and the response of acoustic emission sensors in detecting these waves. Some qualitative and quantitative assessment methodologies were described, and examples and limitations of the methods were presented. Source locations in three dimensions were performed, and strategies on how to best deploy sensors were evaluated using Monte Carlo Simulations.

The field study presented is a significant improvement on laboratory studies in the literature in terms of complex rail profile and crack conditions as well as high operational noise. AE waves induced by crack propagation, crack closure, wheel-rail impact and operational noise were obtained through a series of laboratory and field tests, and analyzed by wavelet transform (WT) and synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SWT). A wavelet power-based index and the enhanced SWT scalogram were sequentially proposed to classify AE waves induced by different mechanisms according to their energy distributions in the time–frequency domain. A novel crack sizing method taking advantage of crack closure-induced AE waves was developed based on fatigue tests in the laboratory. The propagation characteristics of AE waves in the rail were investigated, and Tsallis synchrosqueezed wavelet entropy (TSWE) with time was finally brought forward to detect and locate rail cracks in the field. The proposed strategy for detection, location and sizing of rail cracks helps to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the railway system. This thesis is of interest to graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the area of structural health monitoring.
