Book Acoustic Seismic Ground Sensors for Detection Localization and Classification on the Battlefield

Download or read book Acoustic Seismic Ground Sensors for Detection Localization and Classification on the Battlefield written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to present different acoustic and/or seismic systems designed and tested by Thales Underwater Systems (TUS) in the past few years, in order to detect, localize and classify a large panel of targets on the battlefield. The presented systems address mainly weapon fire detection and localisation, wheeled and tracked vehicles detection/localisation/tracking and aircraft (helicopters, drones) detection, localisation and classification. Depending on the application requirements, they include either stand-alone acoustic/seismic sensor, or networks of acoustic sensors. Firstly, TUS background is recalled, then drawbacks and advantages of acoustic and seismic system are briefly discussed. Some equipment dedicated to different kinds of battlefield target are then described in terms of operational requirement and implied design drivers for stand alone sensors and, when appropriate, for network architectures of unattended ground sensors. The principles of the signal and data processing implemented are outlined. All processing schemes used in Thales Underwater Systems build upon the synergy between Anti-Submarine Warfare and in-air acoustics, and are consistently focused on reliable automatic false alarm control. Actual implementations of this approach in Thales products and demonstrators are presented as well as some experimental results obtained during different ground tests or operational assessment trials: BACH & BARRE for helicopters, drones and blade propelled aircraft, VEGA/ACSIS devices deployed in UGS-TG25 NATO trials for light/heavy wheeled/tracked vehicles, and BACCARA/SL2A for artillery guns (105-155mm), tank guns (105-120mm) and mortars (60-81-120mm). This paper concludes on the means to build upon these target-focused devices for providing an integrated multi-targets acoustic/seismic remote sensor for passive battlefield monitoring.

Book Reliable Classification of High Explosive and Chemical Biological Artillery Using Acoustic Sensors

Download or read book Reliable Classification of High Explosive and Chemical Biological Artillery Using Acoustic Sensors written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army is currently developing acoustic sensor systems that will provide extended range surveillance, detection, and identification for force protection and tactical security. A network of such sensors remotely deployed in conjunction with a central processing node (or gateway) will provide early warning and assessment of enemy threats, near real-time situational awareness to commanders, and may reduce potential hazards to the soldier. In contrast, the current detection of chemical/biological (CB) agents expelled into a battlefield environment is limited to the response of chemical sensors that must be located within close proximity to the CB agent. Since chemical sensors detect hazardous agents through contact, the sensor range to an airburst is the key-limiting factor in identifying a potential CB weapon attack. The associated sensor reporting latencies must be minimized to give sufficient preparation time to field commanders, who must assess if an attack is about to occur, has occurred, or if occurred, the type of agent that soldiers might be exposed to. The long-range propagation of acoustic blast waves from heavy artillery blasts, which are typical in a battlefield environment, introduces a feature for using acoustics and other sensor suite technologies for the early detection and identification of CB threats. Employing disparate sensor technologies implies that warning of a potential CB attack can be provided to the solider more rapidly and from a safer distance when compared to current conventional methods. Distinct characteristics arise within the different airburst signatures because High Explosive (HE) warheads emphasize concussive and shrapnel effects, while chemical/biological warheads are designed to disperse their contents over immense areas, therefore utilizing a slower burning, less intensive explosion to mix and distribute their contents.

Book Detection and Localisation of a Ground Based Impulsive Sound Source Using Acoustic Sensors Onboard a Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Download or read book Detection and Localisation of a Ground Based Impulsive Sound Source Using Acoustic Sensors Onboard a Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic surveillance of the battlefield enables the detection, classification, localisation and tracking of sound sources of military interest including ground vehicles, air vehicles and weapon fire. An application of current interest is the detection and localisation of sources of ground-based indirect weapon fire (from mortars and artillery) using acoustic sensors onboard a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle. The acoustic self-noise environment onboard an aerial vehicle is dominated by propulsion engine noise with air flow noise contributing to a lesser extent. By applying suitable signal processing and pattern recognition methods, it is shown that a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle can provide an effective platform for locating sources of indirect weapon fire.

Book Performance Metrics for Acoustic Small Arms Localization Systems

Download or read book Performance Metrics for Acoustic Small Arms Localization Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past ten years, in-air acoustic sensor systems have been developed for the localization of small arms fire. A number of countries have systems at different stages of advancement that they have deployed on operations. These systems are being mounted on vehicles to provide crews with better situational awareness, thereby enhancing crew safety and force protection. The acoustic system is starting to be incorporated into vehicle equipment as a standard item, especially in new vehicles. The introduction of this new technology requires a pragmatic approach to specifying the performance of these systems. For a number of years, Defence R & D Canada - Valcartier has worked on the development of the Ferret small arms detection and localization system. Our involvement in the design and fielding of the Ferret has provided us with an inside view on how these systems should be specified. In this paper, we propose a basis for the specification of such a system.

Book Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines

Download or read book Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-04-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines potential technologies for replacing antipersonnel landmines by 2006, the U.S. target date for signing an international treaty banning these weapons. Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines emphasizes the role that technology can play to allow certain weapons to be used more selectively, reducing the danger to uninvolved civilians while improving the effectiveness of the U.S. military. Landmines are an important weapon in the U.S. military's arsenal but the persistent variety can cause unintended casualties, to both civilians and friendly forces. New technologies could replace some, but not all, of the U.S. military's antipersonnel landmines by 2006. In the period following 2006, emerging technologies might eliminate the landmine totally, while retaining the necessary functionalities that today's mines provide to the military.
