This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate F0 and SFF variation across and among Indian-Hindi speakers and Anglo European American English speakers. Method: Thirty age matched male Anglo European American and Indian-Hindi speakers participated in the present study. All speakers exhibited normal voice, speech, and language as judged by a speech language pathologist. Their F0 and SFF values were analyzed and compared for sustained /a/, reading and monologue. Result: F0 of sustained phonation for the /a/ for Indian-Hindi speakers was compared with F0 for the /a/ for the Anglo European English American speakers, there was no significant difference between the two groups. All other comparison among and across speakers there were statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Sustained phonation of /a/ across both groups was not significant suggest similar anatomical and physiological mechanism of vocal fold vibration at the vowel level. SFF may or may not vary with language.

Book Spanish Phonetics and Phonology in Contact

Download or read book Spanish Phonetics and Phonology in Contact written by Rajiv Rao and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Phonetics and Phonology in Contact: Studies from Africa, the Americas, and Spain brings together scholars working on a wide range of aspects of the Spanish sound system and how their coexistence with another language in speech communities across the Hispanophone world influences their manifestation. Drawing upon seminal works in the fields of language contact in general, Spanish in contact with indigenous and regional languages, and laboratory approaches tied to the languages in question, the volume's contents employ acoustic and quantitative approaches, as well as both controlled and spontaneous data elicitation procedures, to shed light on how linguistic, historical, and social variables drive contact phenomena, and in turn, shape specific varieties of Spanish. It will pique the interest of researchers and students of fields such as contact linguistics, language variation and change, segmental and suprasegmental phonetics and phonology, and sociolinguistics.

Book To Tap Or Not to Tap

Download or read book To Tap Or Not to Tap written by Florence L. Hardjono and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study investigates whether Indonesian monolingual adult speakers accurately produce American English alveolar tap [ɾ], in intervocalic environments between stressed and unstressed vowels. Participants Twenty adults participated in this study. Thirteen of the participants (nine females, four males) were Indonesian bilingual adults. Seven of the participants (five females and 2 males) were American adult monolingual English speakers born and living in Ohio all their lives. The age range of all the participants in the study was between 30 and 40 years old. Stimuli The stimuli were two pairs of two-syllable English words, “muddy” and “city” and “ladder” and “water.” These words were selected because they contain intervocalic medial /t/ or /d/, preceded by a stressed vowel and followed by un-stressed vowel. Procedure Participants were recorded inside the sound-attenuating booth located in the Speech Perception and Acoustic Laboratory at The Ohio State University. A custom MATLAB program was utilized to present the stimuli through a randomized computer-controlled environment. Each token appeared individually in random order. Participants were instructed to read the stimuli twice. Measurements Using an impressionistic approach, a phonetician, who was a native speaker of English, was asked to listen to all the tokens and determine whether the token was a tap or stop consonant. Adobe Audition 1.0 was utilized to analyze the waveform and spectrogram of each token. The location of these acoustic landmarks was measured: word duration, vowel 1 duration, tap duration, stop duration, closure duration, and vowel 2 duration. Results Results suggested that Indonesian bilingual speakers tend to produce oral stops in the environment in which American monolingual English speakers tend to produce alveolar tap; their taps have a tendency to fall in the acoustic pattern similar to oral stop with the presence of closure and release. Indonesian speakers’ vowel 1 duration preceding taps was longer than American speakers’ vowel 1 duration in the word “muddy” and “city” but shorter in the word “ladder” and “water”. Complete voicing was evident in most of the taps produced by Indonesian monolingual speakers. Tap closure durations produced by Indonesian bilingual speakers tended to be shorter than tap closure durations produced by American monolingual speakers. To date, there is no research study that has specifically investigated the production of Standard American English alveolar taps by Indonesian bilingual speakers. Knowledge gained from this study would be beneficial for future research on cross-linguistic language interference between Bahasa Indonesia and Standard American English.

Book Classification Manual for Voice Disorders I

Download or read book Classification Manual for Voice Disorders I written by Katherine Verdolini and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, there are 300 disorders associated with voice, but until now there has never been a published reference manual that classifies these disorders. Borrowing from the successful organization schema of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), the Classification Manual for Voice Disorders-I provides the framework for classifying voice disorders using the following criteria for each disorder: essential and associated features; vocal impairment; clinical history and demographic profile; course and complications; medical and voice differential diagnosis; and severity criteria. Classification Manual for Voice Disorders-I is a project of ASHA’s Special Interest Division 3, Voice and Voice Disorders (DIV 3), originally directed by contributing authors Moya Andrews, Diane Bless, Daniel Boone, Janina Casper, Leslie Glaze, Mike Karnell, Christy Ludlow, and Joe Stemple. The text was edited over a period of several years by the authoritative group of voice disorders professionals, including Katherine Verdolini, Clark Rosen, and Ryan Branski. This version represents the fields of speech-language pathology, voice science, and otolaryngology. CMVD-I lists most conditions that may negatively affect the ability to produce voice, based on the most current knowledge. These conditions comprise 30 structural pathologies, 25 neurological disorders, 20 aerodigestive conditions, 13 psychological disturbances, 15 systemic diseases, four inflammatory processes, four traumatic conditions, and five miscellaneous voice disorders. CMVD-I is a must-have resource for professionals who specialize in voice disorders, especially speech-language pathologists and otolaryngologists. The handy organization of this reference makes it a convenient and accessible resource for voice coaches and teachers of singing. It will also be invaluable as a textbook in master’s-level communication sciences programs throughout the world. Proceeds received by Division 3 will be used to support the mission of Special Interest Division 3, which provides continuing education and networking opportunities to promote leadership and advocacy for voice issues from professional, clinical, educational, and scientific perspectives.

Book Voice Attractiveness

Download or read book Voice Attractiveness written by Benjamin Weiss and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses various aspects of acoustic–phonetic analysis, including voice quality and fundamental frequency, and the effects of speech fluency and non-native accents, by examining read speech, public speech, and conversations. Voice is a sexually dimorphic trait that can convey important biological and social information about the speaker, and empirical findings suggest that voice characteristics and preferences play an important role in both intra- and intersexual selection, such as competition and mating, and social evaluation. Discussing evaluation criteria like physical attractiveness, pleasantness, likability, and even persuasiveness and charisma, the book bridges the gap between social and biological views on voice attractiveness. It presents conceptual, methodological and empirical work applying methods such as passive listening tests, psychoacoustic rating experiments, and crowd-sourced and interactive scenarios and highlights the diversity not only of the methods used when studying voice attractiveness, but also of the domains investigated, such as politicians’ speech, experimental speed dating, speech synthesis, vocal pathology, and voice preferences in human interactions as well as in human–computer and human–robot interactions. By doing so, it identifies widespread and complementary approaches and establishes common ground for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining coverage of the key concepts and tools within phonetics and phonology with a systematic introduction to Praat, this textbook provides a lively and engaging 'way in' to the discipline. The author first covers the fundamentals of the articulatory and acoustic aspects of speech and introduces Praat as the main tool for examining and visualising speech. Next, the unit of analysis is gradually expanded (from syllables to words to turns and dialogues) and excerpts of real dialogues exemplify the core concepts for discovering how speech works. The final part of the book brings all the concepts and notions together with commentaries to the transcription of several short excerpts of dialogues. This book will be essential reading for students on undergraduate courses in phonetics and phonology.
