Book excerpt: Nowadays, highly-detailed animations of live-actor performances are increasingly easier to acquire and 3D Video has reached considerable attentions in visual media production. In this book, we address the problem of extracting or acquiring and then reusing non-rigid parametrization for video-based animations. At first sight, a crucial challenge is to reproduce plausible boneless deformations while preserving global and local captured properties of dynamic surfaces with a limited number of controllable, flexible and reusable parameters. To solve this challenge, we directly rely on a skin-detached dimension reduction thanks to the well-known cage-based paradigm. First, we achieve Scalable Inverse Cage-based Modeling by transposing the inverse kinematics paradigm on surfaces. Thus, we introduce a cage inversion process with user-specified screen-space constraints. Secondly, we convert non-rigid animated surfaces into a sequence of optimal cage parameters via Cage-based Animation Conversion. Building upon this reskinning procedure, we also develop a well-formed Animation Cartoonization algorithm for multi-view data in term of cage-based surface exaggeration and video-based appearance stylization. Thirdly, motivated by the relaxation of prior knowledge on the data, we propose a promising unsupervised approach to perform Iterative Cage-based Geometric Registration. This novel registration scheme deals with reconstructed target point clouds obtained from multi-view video recording, in conjunction with a static and wrinkled template mesh. Above all, we demonstrate the strength of cage-based subspaces in order to reparametrize highly non-rigid dynamic surfaces, without the need of secondary deformations. To the best of our knowledge this book opens the field of Cage-based Performance Capture.

This book presents tile-based methods based on Wang tiles and corner tiles to solve both these problems. Instead of synthesizing a complex signal when needed, the signal is synthesized beforehand over a small set of Wang tiles or corner tiles. Arbitrary large amounts of that signal can then efficiently be generated when needed by generating a stochastic tiling, and storing only a small set of tiles reduces storage requirements. A tile-based method for generating a complex signal consists of a method for synthesizing the signal over a set of Wang tiles or corner tiles, and a method for generating a stochastic tiling using the set of tiles. The method for generating a stochastic tiling using the set of tiles is independent of the signal. This book covers scanline stochastic tiling algorithms and direct stochastic tiling algorithms for Wang tiles and corner tiles. The method for synthesizing the signal over a set of tiles is dependent on the signal. This book covers tile-based methods for texture synthesis and for generating Poisson disk distributions. This book also explores several applications such as tile-based texture mapping and procedural modeling and texturing. Although the methods for constructing a complex signal over a set of Wang tiles or corner tiles are dependent on the signal, the general idea behind these methods generalizes to other kinds of signals. The methods presented in this book therefore have the potential to make the generation and storage of almost any complex signal efficient. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 10th Eurographics Workshop on Rendering, which took place from the 21st to the 23rd of June, 1999, in Granada, Spain. Origi nally an outgrowth of the annual Eurographics meeting, the workshop was organized by a dedicated group of researchers who felt there was insufficient opportunity at Eu rographics and Siggraph to exchange ideas specifically on rendering. Over the past 9 years, the workshop has become renown as an international watershed for top quality work in this field, attracting between 50 and 100 attendees each year to share their latest research. This year we received a total of 63 submissions. Each paper was carefully reviewed by two of the 25 international programme committee members, as well as two external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 71 individuals. (The programme committee and external reviewers are listed following the contents pages.) In this new review process, all submissions and reviews were handled electronically, with the ex ception of videos submitted with a few of the papers. This streamlined the review process considerably, while reducing the costs and confusion associated with courier delivery of hundreds of papers.
