Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together research into the process of stream acidification and its impact on Welsh surface waters, carried out over the past decade or so. It is perhaps surprising that not until the 1980's was clear evidence of stream acidification assembled. In Wales, concerns over pollution had focused water quality sampling principally on the areas of traditional heavy industry and large urban popula tions served by inadequate sewerage systems and sewage disposal arrange ments. Mistakenly, it had been assumed that, with its prevailing westerly winds, Wales would receive precipitation substantially unpolluted by the industrial and urban emissions from Britain and mainland Europe. Assurance of the high quality of Welsh upland streams, the traditional nursery ground of salmonids, was eroded particularly by studies in the vicinity of Llyn Brianne reservoir in the catchment of the River Tywi of Central Wales. These demonstrated a clear correspondence between the biological quality and fisheries of streams in the catchment and aspects of stream chemistry, par ticularly pH, aluminium and calcium on the one hand, and catchment land use on the other. It is salutary to record that the first signals were of an inexplicable failure of the runs of migratory salmonids into the upper catchment, occupied by the Llyn Brianne reservoir and its influent streams, and the failure to restore the fishery by re-stocking with eggs and fry. Only then did the significance of the recent decline in some other upland lake and reservoir fisheries in Wales become apparent.

Book Environmental Role of Wetlands in Headwaters

Download or read book Environmental Role of Wetlands in Headwaters written by Josef Krecek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally, the wetlands of headwater and upland regions provide many valuable environmental services. This book moves towards a more comprehensive inventory of the benefits and costs of headwater wetlands. It evaluates the research that tries to understand the tolerances, exchanges, checks and balances within headwater landscapes and the downstream impacts of changes in wetlands. It employs case studies and reviews from 21 nations spanning Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. It explores the new policy frameworks, changes in land husbandry, new systems for community education, participatory processes and technological interventions required for the effective management of headwater wetlands and the full integration of wetlands (including newly constructed wetlands) into environmental management and planning. In the past, most research dealt with wetlands as isolated features, this book examines wetlands in their watershed management context.

Book Liming Acidic Surface Waters

Download or read book Liming Acidic Surface Waters written by Harvey Olem and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An encyclopedic work! This comprehensive volume is an impressive integration of European and North American research, providing the most complete information to date regarding the problems and solutions associated with aquatic liming. The book gives readers a thorough understanding of the complexities of liming by providing detailed information on design, use, and effects of liming systems for acidic surface waters. It also includes a complete and objective review of liming successes and failures, providing additional information to help readers determine how well a particular method will restore and protect the affected biota. This book is essential for anyone interested in the restoration of acidic lakes and streams.

Book Acid Rain and Acid Waters

Download or read book Acid Rain and Acid Waters written by Gwyneth Parry Howells and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a basic account of the acid rain story and covers the social and historical background to the effects of emissions on health and the evironment. It provides a wide-ranging but integrated account of this issue which has been of environmental concern for several dcades and, now that control strategies have been enacted in Europe and North America, the author gives consideration to the time-scale for recovery of an acid-damaged ecosystem and the alternatives available.

Book Biogeochemical Monitoring in Small Catchments

Download or read book Biogeochemical Monitoring in Small Catchments written by Jiří V. Černý and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BIOGEOMON conference, held in Prague, September 1993, was dedicated to the use of geochemistry and biology in the elucidation of biogeochemical processes in the context of research on small catchments, which are natural systems that lend themselves to the study of environmental problems at the ecosystem level. Biogeochemical Monitoring in Small Catchments, which contains reviewed papers from the conference, includes long-term studies of nutrient cycling in forested catchments, effects of anthropogenic action on streamwater chemistry, stable isotope studies for tracing biogeochemical processes, determination of the process rates, and mathematical modelling of ecosystem behaviour and mass fluxes. For research scientists and students of ecology, biology, hydrology and geochemistry as well as professionals in natural resources management.

Book Acid Toxicity and Aquatic Animals

Download or read book Acid Toxicity and Aquatic Animals written by R. Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and presents recent research on acid waters and their effects on aquatic animals. Starting with the environment, in order to assess why the problems have arisen in particular areas, the volume then deals with field and survival studies on invertebrates and vertebrates; examines the extent of the biological problem and the attempts that have been made to relate water quality and the susceptibility of animals. The natural progression of environmental and field studies, toxicity, and survival tests provide the background information for the physiological studies that follow. These form the major component of the book and they seek to analyze the toxic effects of acid waters and trace metals with cardiovascular and endocrinological effects.
