Book excerpt: There are approximately 500 different soil varieties in Malaysia, most is residual soil and coastal alluvial soil. This book presents a comprehensive overview of various aspects of soils in Malaysia. It covers topics including climate; flora and fauna; geology and hydrology; land use changes for agriculture; soil fertility; human-induced soil degradation; and soil contamination sources. It features information on the role of biological, chemical, mechanical, and physical factors in relation to soil properties. The book highlights land use impact, soil problems arising from contamination and its control methods, the management of problem soils, limiting materials as well as future soil issues. The presentation of different soils in Malaysia is organized through chapters based on two major soil groups (a) the sedentary soils formed in the interior on a wide range of rock types, and (b) the soils of the coastal alluvial plains. The book features information on how these various soil types affect the economy of the country and highlights the soil issues and challenges within the context of sustainable agriculture. Useful to graduate students of soil science, professionals, and agriculturalists, it provides extensive knowledge of agriculture soils in Malaysia in a concise and user-friendly manner.

Book Soil Science Agricultural and Environmental Prospectives

Download or read book Soil Science Agricultural and Environmental Prospectives written by Khalid Rehman Hakeem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is the most important natural non-renewable resource developed over a longer period of time due to weathering of rocks and subsequently enrichment of organic matter. Soil provides habitat for numerous microorganisms and serves as a natural medium for plant growth, thereby providing the plants with anchorage, nutrients and water to sustain the growth. Soil also serves as a universal sink for all types of pollutants, purifies ground water and is a major reserve of carbon in the universe. The role of soils to provide ecosystem services, maintenance of environmental/human health and ensuring the food security makes it as the most important and basic natural resource. Soil Science helps us to elaborate and understand how the soils provide all these services. Soil Science also provides us the basic knowledge dealing with the origin of the soil parent material, weathering of parent material and the formation of soils, morphological, physico-chemical and biological features of soils, classification of soils and role of soils in the provision and maintenance of ecosystem services, food security and environmental quality. This book encompasses the various processes, functions and behaviour of soils very comprehensively to acquaint the students of soil, plant and environmental sciences about their role to perform different agricultural and environmental functions.

Book Capability and Management of Alluvial Soils Under Hevea in Peninsular Malaysia

Download or read book Capability and Management of Alluvial Soils Under Hevea in Peninsular Malaysia written by Noordin Wan Daud and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic problem for agriculture on those acid-sulphate soils is toxicity and acute acidity when such soils are used in the water-logged state or when drained respectively. when the soils are drained, the S-- compounds are oxidised into SO4-- and Fe++ is oxidised into Fe+++. Tremendous amount of acidity is released in the soil system giving detrimental effect to plant growth. It is suggested that phyllosilicate rich Mg++, Ca++, Na+ and K+ but low in A1+++ and Fe+++ may favourably be used to neutralise the acute acidity in the acid-sulphate soils.
