Book excerpt: Knowledge in the field of acidic deposition is expanding rapidly, and both ex perts and non-experts are challenged to keep up with the latest information. We designed our assessment to include both the basic foundation needed by non experts and the detailed information needed by experts. Our assessment in cludes background information on acidic deposition (Chapter 1), an in-depth discussion of the nature of soil acidity and ecosystem H+ budgets (Chapter 2), and a summary of rates of deposition in the Southeastern U.S. (Chapter 3). A discussion of the nature of forest soils in the region (Chapter 4) is followed by an overview of previous assessments of soil sensitivity to acidification (Chapter 5). The potential impacts of acidic deposition on forest nutrition are described in the context of the degree of current nutrient limitation on forest productivity (Chap ter 6). The results of simulations with the MAGIC model provided evaluations of the likely sensitivity of a variety of soils representative of forest soils in the South (Chapter 7), as well as a test of soil sensitivity criteria. Our synthesis and recommendations for research (Chapter 8) also serve as an executive summary. A complementary volume in the Springer-Verlag Ecological Studies series should be consulted for information on European forests. This volume, Acidic Deposition and Forest Decline in the Fictelgebirge, edited by E.-D. Schultze and O.L. Lange, also provides greater detail on the physiologic responses of trees than we present in our regional assessment.

While the book has its origin in the problems of acidification of Australian soils under pastures, the authors examine soil acidity within a much broader framework, making their views relevant to all agricultural and natural ecosystems on acid soils. The book's first two chapters discuss the chemistry of soil acidity and the ecological processes leading to it. This is followed by separate chapters on biological responses to soil acidity, covering mineralization of soil nitrogen, incidence of plant diseases, plant mycorrhizal associations, symbiotic nitrogen fixation in legumes, and genetic variability in plant response to toxicities. The remaining chapters focus on the correction of soil acidity problems by liming. These include studies on the rates of application and effectiveness of liming materials; and the development and use of computer modelling procedures to help researchers identify the effects and interactions of soil pH on component processes and to provide assistance to farmers in the management of long-term subterranean clover pastures.

Book excerpt: Soil acidity is one of the major problems for crop production in many parts of the world. Poor crop productivity and soil fertility in acid soils are mainly due to a combination of aluminum and manganese toxicities and nutrient deficiencies (mainly deficiencies in P, Ca, Mg and K). Among these problems, aluminum toxicity is one of the major factors limiting crop production in acidic soils. Aluminum, the third most abundant metal in the earth's crust, poses a serious threat to crop productivity in acidic soils. It covers approximately 40 per cent area of the earth's arable land (Ma et al. 2011). Aluminum exists in nature as mononuclear, polynuclear and also as low molecular weight complexes. However, mononuclear is considered as highly toxic as compared to other forms (Taylor 1991, Kinraide 1993). When the soil pH drops below 5.0, aluminum is solubilized as the phytotoxic Al3+ species from non-toxic aluminum silicates and oxides (Lindsay 1979). The mobility of aluminum increases sharply with the reduction in the availability of exchangeable cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ (Parker et al. 1989). The high mobility of aluminum is seen in Kaolinite rich soils at pH levels as high as 5.5 (Alam and Adams 1979, Foy 1974. Roy et al. 1988). The toxicity will be acute at pH 4.1 in soils than at pH 4.5. However, in nutrient solutions, aluminum toxicity is more severe at pH 4.5 than at 4.0 due to the formation of A1(OH)2+ ions, which are more toxic than A13+ itself (Moore 1974).
