After providing a formalization of the structure of the best-of-n problem supported by a comprehensive survey of the swarm robotics literature, it introduces the functioning of a collective decision-making strategy and identifies a set of mechanisms that are essential for a strategy to solve the best-of-n problem. The best-of-n problem is an abstraction that captures the frequent requirement of a robot swarm to choose one option from of a finite set when optimizing benefits and costs. The book leverages the identification of these mechanisms to develop a modular and model-driven methodology to design collective decision-making strategies and to analyze their performance at different level of abstractions. Lastly, the author provides a series of case studies in which the proposed methodology is used to design different strategies, using robot experiments to show how the designed strategies can be ported to different application scenarios.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents distributed consensus algorithms and formation control methods for a swarm of primitive robots. The presented consensus algorithms provide solutions for both collective decision making and one-to-one role assignment in a connected network of swarm robots. The decisions/roles are abstract without specific contents, thus the algorithms can be further "programmed" for a broad range of target applications. The formation control methods aim to achieve a target collective shape among primitive robots with limited sensing and communication range. A new finite state machine is designed to guarantee global aggregation; the SMA-inspired method can further reshape a loop into any pre-programmed shape. In addition, an automatic design method for swarm aggregation is also investigated, showing the potentials of reinforcement learning in unveiling relationship between local rules and global behaviors. The presented algorithms are merged into two specific scenarios to demonstrate how the consensus algorithms and formation control methods can be applied.

Book excerpt: In nature, it is possible to observe a cooperative behaviour in all animals, since, according to Charles Darwin’s theory, every being, from ants to human beings, form groups in which most individuals work for the common good. However, although study of dozens of social species has been done for a century, details of how and why cooperation evolved remain to be worked out. Actually, cooperative behaviour has been studied from different points of view. Swarm robotics is a new approach that emerged on the field of artificial swarm intelligence, as well as the biological studies of insects (i.e. ants and other fields in nature) which coordinate their actions to accomplish tasks that are beyond the capabilities of a single individual. In particular, swarm robotics is focused on the coordination of decentralised, self-organised multi-robot systems in order to describe such a collective behaviour as a consequence of local interactions with one another and with their environment. This book has only provided a partial picture of the field of swarm robotics by focusing on practical applications. The global assessment of the contributions contained in this book is reasonably positive since they highlighted that it is necessary to adapt and remodel biological strategies to cope with the added complexity and problems that arise when robot individuals are considered.
