Book Counterfeit Gods

  • Author : Timothy Keller
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2009-10-20
  • ISBN : 110114887X
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Counterfeit Gods written by Timothy Keller and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet and nationally renowned minister Timothy Keller exposes the error of making good things "ultimate" in this book, and shows readers a new path toward a hope that lasts. Success, true love, and the life you've always wanted. Many of us placed our faith in these things, believing they held the key to happiness, but with a sneaking suspicion they might not deliver. No wonder we feel lost, alone, disenchanted, and resentful. There is only one God who can wholly satisfy our cravings—and now is the perfect time to meet Him again, or for the first time. In Counterfeit Gods, Timothy Keller shows how a proper understanding of the Bible reveals the unvarnished truth about societal ideals and our own hearts. This powerful message cements Keller's reputation as a critical thinker and pastor, and comes at a crucial time—for both the faithful and the skeptical.

Book Youth and Internet Addiction in China

Download or read book Youth and Internet Addiction in China written by Trent Bax and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A form of 'electronic opium' is how some people have characterised young people’s internet use in China. The problem of 'internet addiction' (wangyin) is seen by some parents as so severe that they have sought psychiatric help for their children. This book, which is based on extensive original research, including discussions with psychiatrists, parents and 'internet-addicted' young people, explores the conflicting attitudes which this issue reveals. It contrasts the views of young people who see internet use, especially gaming, as a welcome escape from the dehumanising pressures of contemporary Chinese life, with the approach of those such as their parents, who medicalise internet overuse and insist that working hard for good school grades is the correct way to progress. The author shows that these contrasting attitudes lead to battles which are often fierce and violent, and argues that the greater problem may in fact lie with parents and other authority figures, who misguidedly apply high pressure to enforce young people to conform to the empty values of a modern, dehumanised consumer-oriented society.

This volume reviews our growing knowledge of adult ADHD and presents a transatlantic perspective on the identification, assessment and treatment of the disorder. The introductory section covers the history of ADHD, as well as the epidemiology, consequences, gender differences and legal aspects. Detailed descriptions of the clinical features of ADHD in adults are then given to enhance the reader's clinical recognition and assessment. Subsequent sections cover treatment strategies, emphasising pharmacological, psychological and social interventions. Written and edited by experts internationally renowned for their work in ADHD, this is an essential resource for all mental health workers who encounter adults presenting with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Book ADHD Comorbidities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas E. Brown
  • Publisher : American Psychiatric Pub
  • Release : 2008-12-10
  • ISBN : 1585628336
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book ADHD Comorbidities written by Thomas E. Brown and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books address various aspects of ADHD -- but ADHD Comorbidities: Handbook for ADHD Complications in Children and Adults is the only one that covers the multiple ways in which ADHD is complicated by other psychiatric and learning disorders in both children and adults. It features comprehensive, research-based information on the condition and its full range of comorbidities, from mood disorders to developmental coordination disorder, written by researcher-clinicians familiar with the complications that these additional disorders pose. The authors summarize in accessible language what is currently known about ADHD and its comorbidities from preschool age to adulthood, describing how ADHD produces different profiles at different stages of development. The book offers a new paradigm for understanding ADHD, viewing it not as a simple behavior disorder but as a complex developmental impairment of executive functions in the brain. In describing combinations of disorders in various age groups, this effective guide shows that significant impairments can occur in adolescence and adulthood, when individuals face increased demands for self-management. And because adults with ADHD are likely to have at least one additional psychiatric disorder at some point in their lives, this handbook also describes how to adjust treatment strategies for both ADHD and additional disorders to reduce the impairments resulting from comorbidity. Among the book's features: It reviews aspects of ADHD not only for elementary-school children, adolescents, and adults but also for preschoolers, giving ADHD developmental context by describing how symptoms in preschool years differ from those in older children Eleven chapters offer practical clinical help for patients whose ADHD appears in combination with other disorders, including aggression, mood disorders, obsessive/compulsive disorders, substance abuse, Tourette syndrome, and the autistic/Asperger's disorder spectrum. It presents guidelines for assessing and treating complicated ADHD, including psychopharmacological treatment, psychosocial treatment, cognitive therapy, and tailoring treatment to individuals and their families. It provides guidance on adapting and adjusting medications and other interventions to optimize treatment effects for the wide diversity of complex cases that embody ADHD. It contains useful information about how to discern other disorders when the chief complaint suggests ADHD -- and how to detect ADHD when the patient's presentation has been modified by the presence of other disorders. With its comprehensive summaries of research and wealth of clinical guidance, this handbook clearly shows how attentional disorders are related to other conditions and how patients with these more complex variants of ADD can be more effectively recognized and treated.
