Book excerpt: From the editor-in-chief and co-owner of the highly respected self-improvement site Pick the Brain comes an inspirational guide for overscheduled, overwhelmed women on how to do less so that they can achieve more. Women live in a state of constant guilt: that we’re not doing enough, that we’re not good enough, that we can’t keep up. If we’re not climbing the corporate ladder, building our side hustle, preparing home-cooked meals, tucking the kids in at night, meditating daily, and scheduling playdates, date nights, and girls’ nights every week, we feel like we’re not living our best lives. Yet traditional productivity books—written by men—barely touch on the tangle of cultural pressures that women feel when facing down a to-do list. Now, Erin Falconer will show you how to do less—a lot less. In fact, How to Get Sh*t Done will teach you how to zero in on the three areas of your life where you want to excel, and then it will show you how to off-load, outsource, or just stop giving a damn about the rest. As the founder of two technology start-ups and one of Refinery29’s Top 10 Women Changing the Digital Landscape for Good, Erin has seen what happens when women chase an outdated, patriarchal model of productivity, and now she shows you how even the most intense perfectionist among us can tap into our inner free spirit and learn to feel like badasses. Packed with real-life advice, honest stories from Erin’s successful career, and dozens of actionable resources, How to Get Sh*t Done will forever reframe productivity so that you can stop doing everything for everyone and start doing what matters to you.

Book excerpt: A lot of professors give talks titled 'The Last Lecture'. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave, 'Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams', wasnt about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Book The First 20 Hours

  • Author : Josh Kaufman
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2013-06-13
  • ISBN : 1101623047
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book Tick Achieve

Download or read book Tick Achieve written by Kevin Duncan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many times have you thought of something crucial to do and then forgotten it completely? That's why people invented lists. And very useful they are too. If, and only if, they are used effectively. Put thirty things on a list, and it becomes too daunting. Put three things on, and there's no point in having a list. And so we have refined the art of list writing to allow for about ten or twenty things to do. But in truth, most lists are rubbish. Randomly assembled, they do little to help the author navigate their way through the maze of stuff to do. After all, the only point of a list of things to do, is to get things done. Tick Achieve does just that. It shows you how to get stuff done, with lots of little techniques tried and tested on scores of individuals over 25 years. This includes the cathartic and highly effective process of writing a list of what you are not going to do. The author has trained hundreds of people in the art of getting stuff done. There is no Big Plan as such (contrary to what many other books suggest). It's all about details, and they can be very easy to implement. Little things can make a massive difference. Once you get the hang of it, life gets easier. In a business context, and personally. You can sleep better and worry less. Concentrate on the things that matter, and leave out the trivia and irrelevant. Learn how to celebrate little bits of progress, look down your list, tick off a job well done, and shout Tick Achieve! Book The Power of Three

Download or read book The Power of Three written by Lisa M. Dietlin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-05-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People often say to me, "You are so lucky." What I tell them is that yes, it might appear I am lucky. What has in fact been going on is a purposeful and strategic plan of action. I share that I achieve my goals by doing a little bit each day to get to where I want to go. It is similar to saying you want to take a trip to the other side of the continent or world. Most of us can't just say we want to do this and then, as if by magic, it happens. Most of us have to plan the trip - determining the timeframe in which it will take place, schedule the time off from work, save money, purchase travel books, etc. We often find ourselves doing something each day towards this goal. I have noticed, though, that when it comes to achieving our dreams and personal goals many of these skills - so natural in planning things such as vacations - don't happen naturally. This book is the result of years of working in a style and with a system that I thought everyone used. It was only when giving presentations and speeches did I begin to see the impact these "tips" were having. Throughout my talks, I would offer these ideas as "tools" to be put in the listener's "toolbox" so that they would have them readily accessible in the future. What always amazed me was that after my presentation was done, many leaders and managers would approach me saying, "I'm taking these ideas back to my business and having everyone do them...and oh, by the way, do you have this in writing so I could share it?" I would sheepishly answer that I did not - that it was simply what I did every day to achieve my goals whether in the political world, nonprofit arena or in my consulting business practice. Over the years, the requests came often enough for me to be prompted to write this book. In short, The Power of Three provides helpful ideas on where to start, how to do the 'hard' things, the best way to network, when to seize opportunities and how listening just might be the key to it all. Through reading and implementing these seemingly simple strategies, your goals and dreams, both personal and professional, will be attained.
