Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain’s Spiders is a photographic guide to all 37 of the British families, focussing on spiders that can be identified in the field. Illustrated with a remarkable collection of photographs, it is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, including those new to spider identification. This book pushes the boundaries of field identification for this challenging group by combining information on features that can be seen with the naked eye or a hand lens with additional evidence from webs, egg-sacs, behaviour, phenology, habitats and distributions. Individual accounts cover 395 of Britain’s approximately 670 species, with the limitations to field identification clearly explained. As the first photographic field guide to British spiders to be published since 1989, this book fills a major gap in the resources available to everyone with an interest in this fascinating, diverse and important group of animals. More than 700 stunning photographs Includes a guide to spider families, based on features recognisable in the field, focussing on body shape and other characteristics, as well as separate guides to webs and egg-sacs Detailed accounts highlight key identification tips for each genus and species, and include information on status, behaviour and habitats Features up-to-date distribution maps, and charts showing adult seasonality Introductory chapters explore the biology of spiders, and where, when and how to find them, including equipment needed in the field Contains a complete list of the spiders recorded in Britain, indicating the ease of identification as well as rarity and conservation status Provides information on how to record spiders and make your records count, and guidance on how to take your interest further

Book The Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland Compact Edition

Download or read book The Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland Compact Edition written by Michael John Roberts and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title has been out of print for some years, but has now been reprinted. It is now generally recognised as the definitive text on British spiders. Roberts' first edition of this work (3 vols, in 1987) superseded and updated the previous bible for British Arachnologists (Locket and Millidge, 1951, 1953 and 1974). This newer edition with additional Appendix, Addenda and Corrigenda in turn updates and revises the1987 edition. The first volume contains all the text, starting with a series of introductory notes on spider biology and some information on classification and nomenclature as it applies to spiders. Following this is a key to families and the species descriptions including 105 genera and 267 species of Linyphiidae. These two volumes are both a work of art and a work of science and so bring together the highest possible achievements of a human being. Their presence in the libraries of all academic as well as private Arachnid libraries is a must in order that their great value to the science of arachnology in Europe be allowed to bear fruit abundantly.

Download or read book Advances in the Study of Behavior written by H. Jane Brockmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the Study of Behavior was initiated over 40 years ago to serve the increasing number of scientists engaged in the study of animal behavior. That number is still expanding. This volume makes another important "contribution to the development of the field" by presenting theoretical ideas and research to those studying animal behavior and to their colleagues in neighboring fields. This volume reflects many of the current themes in animal behavior including the evolution of social behavior, sexual selection and communication. It also reflects controversial topics on which the authors provide interesting, new insights. Advances in the Study of Behavior is now available online at ScienceDirect — full-text online from volume 30 onwards.

Book Spider Webs

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Eberhard
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-12-01
  • ISBN : 022653460X
  • Pages : 679 pages

Download or read book Spider Webs written by William Eberhard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lavishly illustrated, first-ever book on how spider webs are built, function, and evolved, William Eberhard provides a comprehensive overview of spider functional morphology and behavior related to web building, and of the surprising physical agility and mental abilities of orb weavers. For instance, one spider spins more than three precisely spaced, morphologically complex spiral attachments per second for up to fifteen minutes at a time. Spiders even adjust the mechanical properties of their famously strong silken lines to different parts of their webs and different environments, and make dramatic modifications in orb designs to adapt to available spaces. This extensive adaptive flexibility, involving decisions influenced by up to sixteen different cues, is unexpected in such small, supposedly simple animals. As Eberhard reveals, the extraordinary diversity of webs includes ingenious solutions to gain access to prey in esoteric habitats, from blazing hot and shifting sand dunes (to capture ants) to the surfaces of tropical lakes (to capture water striders). Some webs are nets that are cast onto prey, while others form baskets into which the spider flicks prey. Some aerial webs are tramways used by spiders searching for chemical cues from their prey below, while others feature landing sites for flying insects and spiders where the spider then stalks its prey. In some webs, long trip lines are delicately sustained just above the ground by tiny rigid silk poles. Stemming from the author’s more than five decades observing spider webs, this book will be the definitive reference for years to come.
