Book Accumulation and Toxicity of Several Ions in Bean Plants in Relation to Climate

Download or read book Accumulation and Toxicity of Several Ions in Bean Plants in Relation to Climate written by Shapoor Hajrasuliha and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four experiments were conduced with bean plants to study the relationship between salt concentration and growth under varied climatic conditions, also to determine the rate of uptake and possible toxicity of Na, Ca, Mg, Cl and SO4 ions. Several salts were used and the various experiments were conduced in different seasons. The results show that climat conditions have a marked influence on yield reductions as well as the toxicity symptoms of plants. Plants grow in winter time under cloudy, rainy, or foggy conditions with only a few sunny or partially sunny days showed no significant difference in the yield of o to 60 meq/l mixed NaCl and NaqSO4 salts, while plants grown in saline sulutions late in the spring and early summer showed 46 and 70% yield reductions for 40 to 80 meq/l mixed NaCl and Na2SO4 solutions, respectively. Under hot, dry summer conditions, the leaf accumulation of Na and SO4 ions increased markedly to toxic levels. In some cases Na and SO4 content of the leaf was higher than in the root. This indicates either a mass flow movement of these ions to the leaves or an impairment ofexclusion machanism under this climat condition. Under mild climatic conditions, Ng and Ca also tended to accumulate the leaves to high levels resulting in toxicity to the plant or impairment of an optimum Ca-Mg ratio reported by other investigators.

Download or read book Selenium in plants written by Elizabeth A.H. Pilon-Smits and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers many facets of plant selenium (Se) accumulation: molecular genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and ecological and evolutionary aspects. Broader impacts and applications of plant Se accumulation also receive attention. Plant Se accumulation is very relevant for environmental and human health. Selenium is both essential at low levels and toxic at high levels, and both Se deficiency and toxicity are problems worldwide. Selenium can positively affect crop productivity and nutritional value. Plants may also be used to clean up excess environmental Se. Selenium in plants has profound ecological impact, and likely contributes to Se movement in ecosystems and global Se cycling.

Book Cellular and Molecular Phytotoxicity of Heavy Metals

Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Phytotoxicity of Heavy Metals written by Mohammad Faisal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant growth and development is closely dependent on the plant environment, including the wide-spread presence of organic and inorganic xenobiotics and pollutants. Currently, heavy metals are the most common inorganic environmental pollutants and they have pronounced effects and consequences not only for plants, but also for the ecosystem in which the plants form an integral component. It has been suggested that these contaminants accumulate in agricultural crops, thus entering the food chain and posing a significant health risk. Plants growing in polluted sites exhibit altered metabolism, reduced growth, and decreased biomass production. These pollutants adhere to plant roots and exert physical or chemical toxicity and subsequently cell death in plants. Yet, plants have developed various defence mechanisms to counteract the toxicity induced by heavy metals. Only detailed study of the processes and mechanisms would allow researchers and students to understand the interactions, responses, and adaptations of plants to these pollutants; however, there are several unresolved issues and challenges regarding the interaction and biological effects of heavy metals. Therefore, this volume provides relevant, state-of-the-art findings on environmental phytotoxicity and the mechanisms of such interactions at the cellular and molecular levels. This volume consists of chapters on relevant topics contributed by different experts or group of experts so as to make available a comprehensive treatise designed to provide an in-depth analysis of heavy metals phytotoxicity. This book may serve as a reference to scientists, researchers and students in the fields of toxicology, environmental toxicology, phytotoxicology, plant biology, plant physiology, plant biochemistry and plant molecular biology, and especially those interested in heavy metals toxicology.
