Book Getting Citizens Involved

Download or read book Getting Citizens Involved written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single Community Programme is a Government initiative which seeks to encourage local community participation in local policy-making across England and in the design of the public services they receive. The initiative is expected to cost around £182 million between the years 2001-2006 and targets the most deprived local authority districts in England. It seeks to ensure the representation of diverse community needs through the provision of grants to community groups involved in improving their neighbourhoods, and support for community empowerment networks that help communities influence local decision-making. The scheme has so far supported around 25,000 separate self-help and community projects, funded directly through local voluntary sector organisations. This report focuses on the effectiveness of the single Community Programme in encouraging communities to get involved in neighbourhood renewal and regeneration schemes, and seeks to identify broader lessons of relevance to community participation initiatives across the whole of government.

Download or read book Unifying Geography written by David T. Herbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be argued that the differences in content and approach between physical and human geography, and also within its sub-disciplines, are often overemphasised. The result is that geography is often seen as a diverse and dynamic subject, but also as a disorganised and fragmenting one, without a focus. Unifying Geography focuses on the plural and competing versions of unity that characterise the discipline, which give it cohesion and differentiate it from related fields of knowledge. Each of the chapters is co-authored by both a leading physical and a human geographer. Themes identified include those of the traditional core as well as new and developing topics that are based on subject matter, concepts, methodology, theory, techniques and applications. Through its identification of unifying themes, the book will provide students with a meaningful framework through which to understand the nature of the geographical discipline. Unifying Geography will give the discipline renewed strength and direction, thus improving its status both within and outside geography.

Book Paving the Way

Download or read book Paving the Way written by Alan Baxter & Associates and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paving the way sets out an agenda for improving the most neglected element in the built environment - the street. Clean, safe and attractive streets in which people, not cars, are paramount help to bind communities together and contribute to wider social objectives such as reducing traffic accidents and crime levels. This study for CABE and ODPM by Alan Baxter & Associates, highlights significant barriers in the institutional, management and policy framework which inhibit the creation of streets for multiple uses. The challenge for government, urban designers, highway engineers and local authorities is to change ingrained attitudes and cultures that fail to treat streets as quality places in themselves.

Book excerpt: As the importance of public education increases both globally and nationally, partnerships between schools and their community become key to each other's success. Examining the intersection of schools with their communities reveals the most effective strategies for supporting school populations that are traditionally marginalized or underserved in both rural and urban areas. Cases on Strategic Partnerships for Resilient Communities and Schools is an essential publication that uncovers the problems and pitfalls of creating strategic partnerships between schools and other members of the community in which the schools are situated that include for-profit businesses, not-for-profit entities, and private organizations. The book reveals that schools that are thriving effectively do not do so in isolation but as vibrant members and centers of the communities in which they serve students and families. Moreover, it examines the difficulty in advocating for the schools and the leadership of the schools within these communities so that they can be better served. Highlighting a wide range of topics including leadership, community-based outreach, and school advocacy, this book is ideally designed for teachers, school administrators, principals, school boards and committees, non-profit administrators, educational advocates, leadership faculty, community engagement directors, community outreach personnel, entrepreneurs, researchers, academicians, and students.
