At the Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College, Mr. M. W. Newcomb of the Class of 1922 and Mr. E. D. Smith of the Class of 1923 made such in vestigations under the supervision of Professor Archie M. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retail Organization and Accounting Control With the firm belief that Accounting may eventually become a science, and that the knowledge accumulated through experience and experiments is essential to the furtherance of such science, I have written this book out of my accumulated knowledge and experience for the benefit of retailing establishments and the accounting profession. We are living in a world of specialization and in writing this book, I have treated in its entirety retail control. All the systems have been installed with very large organiza tions to test their worth, prior to placing them before Retailers and the Accounting world in this volume. No consideration whatever is given to manufacturing, except ing where it is necessary to draw a comparison. The department store, the specialty shop, and retail store of any description are within the book's scope. I have eliminated as far as possible technicalities, that the value of this volume may be enhanced as a textbook and wherever it may be required for a complete installation of a department store system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retail Charge Account, Prepared Under the Direction of the Educational Committee of the Associated Retail Credit Men of New York City, Inc The problem of granting credit must be faced by every retailer, large or small, that is to say, by everyone who sells either merchandise or service directly to the consumer. It is a significant fact that while many small retailers regard credit sales with great disfavor and as something to be avoided so far as possible, nearly all whose operations are extensive find their charge trade a most valuable part of their business, even endeavoring where possible to convert their cash patrons into charge patrons. The exceptions to this rule among large stores are so rare as to create comment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operating Expenses in Retail Jewelry Stores in 1919 The accounting system defines in detail exactly what items of receipts and expenditures are included in each account. It shows how to summarize these accounts for the year on a specially prepared profit and loss statement. For the use of dealers who, for one reason or another, are not prepared to keep double-entry books, there is also provided a system of record sheets which keeps separate the various sales, mer chandise, and expense accounts. The store already having a satisfactory accounting system can readily adjust its figures to the standard profit and loss sheet. This profit and loss sheet was used as the basis upon which reports were collected from the trade. Blank forms of the standard sheet were sent out in February, 1920, to 3826 representative jewelers throughout the country with a circular letter explaining briefly the object of the work and asking for the cooperation of the trade. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from System of Operating Accounts for Hardware Retailers: Explanation of the Profit and Loss Statement The purpose of this bulletin is to define the accounting terms used in retail hardware stores. There has been great varia tion in the meanings given by different retailers to accounting terms in common use. Hence a uniform accounting system, with standard definitions that will Show just what is meant by gross profit, selling expense, and each of the other items is essential if reliable figures are to be collected and if hardware retailers are to be able to compare their own results intelligently with the Bureau's summaries. Although the conditions are different, he can see the changes which his own expenses are undergoing. Additional guidance in managing his business is secured, if he can detect chronic weak spots, the points at which his business is behind the average standard. By using a system that is standard in the trade, he is alle to compare his ex penses with the expenses. Of other hardware retailers doing a business similar to his own, for the same period of time' under' like conditions. Such comparisons will enable him to learn when any expense is above the average, and thus direct. His attention to the opportunities for economy.
