Download or read book Materials concerning La Salle s attempt in 1684 to establish a colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi including a travel report by Jean Cavelier and two letters to the duque de Jovenazo from Baron de Lahontan in Lisbon written by Louis Armand de Lom d'Arce baron de Lahontan and published by . This book was released on 1699 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photostatic copy, probably from around 1924, of an account by Jean Cavelier, brother of Robert Cavelier de La Salle, of the disastrous expedition to establish a French colony in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi River between 1684 and 1688, and two related letters, dated Sept. 1 and Sept. 7, 1699, to the duque de Jovenazo from the baron de Lahontan in Lisbon. The account, written long after the fact, but given a day-by-day journal character by the use of marginal dates, was originally intended for the marquis de Seignelay, French minister of state. The expedition left La Rochelle, in July 1684, and from the beginning, was plagued with disasters--bad weather, illness, and insubordination by the naval commander Beaujeu. The loss of the main supply ship, and La Salle's illness in the West Indies threw the expedition into disarray. Continuing on with 180 men, La Salle missed the mouth of the Mississippi and ended up in what is now Matagorda Bay, Texas. The ill-fated expedition tried twice to reach Canada, and during the second attempt, in Jan. 1687, La Salle was assassinated by one of his own men. Cavelier did reach Montreal in June 1688, and sailed home to France in Aug. 1688. Along with his copy of Cavelier's journal, Lahontan sends two letters which he wrote to the duke of Jovenazo, dated Sept. 1 and Sept. 9, 1699, in Lisbon, discussing Spanish concerns about French claims to territory in the Gulf of Mexico. A cover letter, dated Jan. 31, 1700, informs the marqués del Carpio that copies are being sent to the Consejo de Indias.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sample the untold history of Texas’s wine industry in this book filled with fascinating stories and photos. Spanish colonists may have come to Texas to spread Christianity, but under visionary Father Fray Garcia, they stayed and raised grapes. Later immigrants brought their own burgundy tastes of home, creating a unique wine country. When a North American pest threatened European vines, it was Texan scientist T. V. Munson who helped save the industry overseas. When Prohibition loomed stateside, Frank Qualia's Val Verde Winery in Del Rio survived by selling communion wine—and it’s now the longest-operating bonded winery in the state. Today, tourists flock to Texas vineyards, and the state sells more wine every year. Join local experts Kathy and Neil Crain and sample the untold story of Texas's wine industry, a 350-year story that is still reaching its savory peak.
