Book Christmas Island Indian Ocean

Download or read book Christmas Island Indian Ocean written by Julietta Jameson and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 2001, the arrival of the Tampa and its refugee cargo pushed a small Scotty dog-shaped island into the limelight. This relatively unknown Australian territory became a name on everyone's lips as the political and social debate raged around this dot in the Indian Ocean.Julietta Jameson, like many of us, was intrigued by Christmas Island, and wondered where it was and how it came into being. Curious, she booked a flight and travelled to this tiny island, 2600km north-west of Perth and 360km south-west of Java, determined to find out more about the island and its people. She stayed for three months. What she found was an amazing tropical island paradise, surrounded by rugged coastline, turquoise blue waters and breathtaking rainforests. A naturalist's dream, Christmas Island is a National Park sanctuary filled with endangered frigate and migratory birds and the infamous Red Crabs that migrate across the island like a real life Red Sea.Set against this beautiful backdrop of nature and wildlife, Julietta also discovered an island with an amazing cultural history and was welcomed into a vibrant tightly knit community of Muslims, Chinese, Malays, Europeans and Australian mainlanders.

Download or read book A Monograph of Christmas Island Indian Ocean written by Charles W. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of Christmas Island (Indian Ocean): Physical Features and Geology The Trustees having been pleased to authorize the preparation of a monograph embracing the scientific results of the exploration of Christmas Island by Mr. C. W. Andrews during a visit extending over ten months in 1897-98, I was requested by the Director to make the necessary arrangements, and obtain the assistance of the several members of the staff of the Natural History Departments in the British Museum and other gentlemen (whose names will be found in this work), without whose kind co-operation Mr. Andrews' task would have been an impossible one. The valuable help of various special artists had also to be secured to illustrate the work, and within rather over a year from the time of inception the volume has been completed. By Professor Lankester's desire, this monograph has been restricted to a description of the Physical Features and the Geology, together with the Land Fauna and Flora of the island. Book Introduction to Christmas Island

Download or read book Introduction to Christmas Island written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas Island is an Australian external territory located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 360 kilometers south of Java and 2,600 kilometers northwest of Perth. It is only 135 square kilometers in size, making it one of the smallest territories in Australia. The island is famous worldwide for its spectacular annual red crab migration where millions of red crabs march from the forest to the sea to spawn. The island was discovered by the British in 1643 and named after the day of its discovery, which was Christmas Day. In 1958, the island was transferred to Australia, and today it is an Australian territory with a mixed population of mainly Chinese, Australian, and Malay. The island is known for its rich natural diversity and cultural heritage. It is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, including over a hundred bird species, several endangered species such as the Golden Bosun (an endemic bird), and several types of crabs unique to the island. The island's distinct culture is a blend of Asian and Australian influences, with its primary language being English, but dialects such as Chinese Malay and Indian dialects are also spoken. Visitors to Christmas Island have the opportunity to experience its unique culture and outstanding natural beauty, making it an increasingly popular tourist destination.
