This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 1375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Account Books of the Reimarus Family of Hamburg, 1728-1780, Almut Spalding and Paul S. Spalding offer a two-volume critical edition of domestic records that open windows onto early modern Europe and the Enlightenment. They detail economic realities, social circles, cultural and educational pursuits, leisure activities, religious communities, and institutions in the life of a great city and a distinguished family. Volume one consists of the transcription, with an introduction and illustrations. Volume two is an extensive index. Hermann Samuel Reimarus and his daughter Margareta Elisabeth (Elise) Reimarus carefully maintained these records over fifty years. The former was a notable classicist, biblical scholar, animal behaviorist, and freethinker; the latter, leader of a literary salon, educator, translator, and author.
Download or read book Household Accounts and Disbursement Books of Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester Volume 6 written by Dr. Simon Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Dudley, the first Earl of Leicester, was a leading figure at the court of Elizabeth I, and this book presents a scholarly edition of both his two surviving household accounts (from 1558 to 1581), and the fragments of his disbursement books (from 1584 to 1586). The work also includes an appendix of those lists of household servants that have survived. This is the only collection of such information available for such a prominent member of the Elizabethan court, and as such provides numerous valuable insights into the personal finances of members of the Elizabethan aristocracy. It will thus be essential reading for any serious scholar of the high politics of the Elizabethan period.

Download or read book To Joy My Freedom written by Tera W. Hunter and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Civil War drew to a close, newly emancipated black women workers made their way to Atlanta—the economic hub of the newly emerging urban and industrial south—in order to build an independent and free life on the rubble of their enslaved past. In an original and dramatic work of scholarship, Tera Hunter traces their lives in the postbellum era and reveals the centrality of their labors to the African-American struggle for freedom and justice. Household laborers and washerwomen were constrained by their employers’ domestic worlds but constructed their own world of work, play, negotiation, resistance, and community organization. Hunter follows African-American working women from their newfound optimism and hope at the end of the Civil War to their struggles as free domestic laborers in the homes of their former masters. We witness their drive as they build neighborhoods and networks and their energy as they enjoy leisure hours in dance halls and clubs. We learn of their militance and the way they resisted efforts to keep them economically depressed and medically victimized. Finally, we understand the despair and defeat provoked by Jim Crow laws and segregation and how they spurred large numbers of black laboring women to migrate north. Hunter weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of the culture and experience of black women workers in the post–Civil War south. Through anecdote and data, analysis and interpretation, she manages to penetrate African-American life and labor and to reveal the centrality of women at the inception—and at the heart—of the new south.
Download or read book Philosophy of Life The Book of Basics written by Wolfgang Fries and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy should give the human being a mental basis that will allow man to lead a happy life and solve the problems of the now. Philosophy does not consist of making things complicated and incomprehensible like today's degenerate philosophies do. In this book, no philosophical phrases are discussed in order to play mental soccer. This book gives basics about life, which one can apply to lead to a fulfilled, happy existence. Basic questions about life itself are solved. What is life? What is man? Is it that a creature arose from mud by chance as science tells you? Or is it that matter is motivated by a soul as the priest makes you believe. Why does man think the way he thinks? What is the goal of existence?
