Book Paving the Way to Success

Download or read book Paving the Way to Success written by Katelin Rudeen and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Abstract A middle school in an urban area of San Diego is preparing itself for inclusive education practices for students with mild to moderate disabilities in general education classrooms. The district and school administrators are eager to start including students with disabilities with their general education peers and have sought the counsel of Dr. Jacque Thousand on how to smoothly and effectively create an inclusive culture over a two or three year time frame. The district has taken some preliminary steps towards inclusive schooling and is starting to include students with mild to moderate disabilities with their peers in general education settings grades K-8. In the Fall of 2016, all students with mild to moderate disabilities will be included into the elective courses of music, art, and computer coding. An Education Specialist on campus has a music background. She understands that her students will require appropriate scaffolds in order to access the content taught in general education music classes, particularly in academic vocabulary. The district is in a low socioeconomic area that has little resources for their elective programs in music. Using a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach, this project focuses on developing a visual guide that meets the needs of all students, including students with disabilities and English language learners in general education music classes. Keywords: academic vocabulary, inclusion, music education, multiple intelligences theory, music picture dictionary, special education, students with disabilities.

Book Serving Special Education Students in the Music Classroom

Download or read book Serving Special Education Students in the Music Classroom written by Kathryn Lambert and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music education programs positively impact the lives of students both socially and emotionally. As the following research suggests, music may have an even greater impact on students with disabilities or exceptionalities. Due to the lack of accessibility, funding, time, training, and other issues, opportunities in music education programs may be limited to groups of students who may not fit the standard music education student profile. As teachers of common core classes may struggle to accommodate students with exceptionalities and may feel as if they are lacking in resources or other needed preparation to adequately serve these students, these struggles are also present in the music classroom. This can potentially inhibit an exceptional student from being involved in a music program or limit the student’s opportunity to participate. The aim of this study is to show why students with exceptionalities may be limited in their involvement in music programs and to help uncover issues that may impede students with exceptionalities from readily participating in music programs to the same extent as students without disabilities. The study’s purpose is to inform music educators and decision makers that music is an all-encompassing subject that should be accessible to all students.

Book Observations of Students with Disabilities in Inclusive Music Classrooms and Guidelines for Future Research

Download or read book Observations of Students with Disabilities in Inclusive Music Classrooms and Guidelines for Future Research written by Ellary Anne Draper and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, most children with disabilities in the US are now educated in schools with their typically developing peers. Although many of these children are in elementary schools (VanWeelden & Whipple, 2014) there is little empirical research that informs educational practice in elementary music classrooms (Jellison & Draper, in press). This dissertation comprises an observational study of the behavior of children with disabilities in inclusive music classrooms and their opportunities to practice their Individual Education Program (IEP) goals, and guidelines for conducting research with children with disabilities in inclusive elementary music classes. In the observational study I describe the opportunities for nine students with disabilities (Specific Learning Disabilities and/or Speech or Language Impairments) to engage in behaviors related to objectives defined in their IEPs in four inclusive music classrooms in relation to the music activities in which the children participated (e.g., singing, playing instruments) and instructional formats of the class (e.g., whole class, small groups, pairs). A further goal was to identify students' participation and peer interactions. Results indicated that music theory and other music knowledge activities provided opportunities for students to engage in behaviors related to their IEP objectives. Opportunities for individual responses (verbal/nonverbal and music) and music performances were rare, but when students responded they were most often accurate. Students were most often on-task, particularly when engaged in music making activities, and they interacted with peers when assigned to work in groups and also when interactions were extemporaneous. I developed guidelines for future research based on my experiences conducting the study, and I discuss the challenges of identifying schools, classrooms, and participants; obtaining formal consent; developing the methodology (research questions, variables, operational definitions, equipment and materials); analyzing and reporting results; and consulting with school personnel before, during, and following the completion of research.

Delivering Authentic Arts Education outlines the true nature of arts education and its importance in the curriculum, emphasising the arts as forms of creative activity, meaning-making and expression in a cultural context. Chapters discuss how to recognise and build on your existing artistic abilities and pedagogical skills, how to encourage children’s creativity, how to lead arts appreciation experiences, and the general principles of planning and assessment. They then examine the five arts areas: dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts. The final part of the text contains sample learning activities and resources that demonstrate how to plan an effective lesson within a unit of inquiry. Practical tips, classroom ‘snapshots’, starter ideas and suggestions for online resources show you the links between theory and practice so you can develop arts education experiences that are purposeful, stimulating and engaging for everyone"--Publisher's summary.

Book Music Curriculum for the Students with Visual Impairment

Download or read book Music Curriculum for the Students with Visual Impairment written by Vera Gerges Jabbour and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All humans possess musical abilities": with these words Anderson and Laurence expressed their ideas in their book entitled Integrating Music into the Elementary Classroom (Anderson & Laurence, 2007, p.3). Since all human beings possess musical ability and have the right to learn music, students with visual impairment have also this right and the potential to learn music. When there was no Lebanese music curriculum for G1 students with visual impairment, developing new G1 music curriculum for these students became imperative to cater to their needs. The proposed curriculum was based on the hypothesis which incorporated the development of the social, psychomotor and cultural skills of the students with visual impairment and the purpose of the qualitative research. The discussion of the new curriculum and the individualized lesson plans of three case studies reflect what was discussed in current literature mainly: the criteria of writing music curriculum, various teaching methodologies for music, three different G1 music curricula from three countries, and the characteristics and the challenges of students with visual impairment in learning music. Finally, limitations and implications of this study were also included in the research. No wonder Doloris Cheslike mentioned in her article Music Instruction for the Visually Handicapped the following statement: "music, the universal language, is a bridge over the barrier of their handicap, loss of sight" (Cheslike, 1961, p. 100).
