Book The Right of Access to Open Countryside

Download or read book The Right of Access to Open Countryside written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-06-09 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, the new right of access (commonly known as the 'right to roam') was phased in between September 2004 and October 2005, giving walkers the right to walk on large areas of the English countryside without having to keep to specified paths. 865,000 hectares of land (around 6.5 per cent of all land in England) is in practice open to the public and of this, 733,000 hectares is land to which no right of access previously existed. The NAO report finds that the right to roam was successfully introduced by the Countryside Agency in conjunction with Defra two months ahead of target, with easy access to over 90 per cent of the sites tested. There were initial problems with the countryside access website established to provide public information about the scheme, relating to the quality of online maps of access land and to the search function, but these had begun to improve by April 2006. The cost of implementing the open access programme was almost double the original estimate, largely due to a failure to pilot test the implementation of the scheme and a lack of adequate project management. In total, the cost of implementation is estimated to be £69 million and ongoing running costs are expected to be around £13 million in 2006-07. Although the benefits of the scheme cannot be easily quantified in financial terms, the NAO's initial assessment of the new right of access finds that it passed the key test of whether walkers can use it. Recommendations made include that in order to improve public transport facilities to enable people on low incomes and from urban areas to have more opportunities to use their new right of access, the Agency should explore with local councils the cost-effectiveness of diverting weekend bus services past open access land.

Using life stories which she has collected, Deborah Fink explores the experiences of today's women. She traces them to past influences, beginning with the time of the first settlers, and shows how family, religion, and work have changed over the years. Her interpretation of social patterns as determined by the history of national politics, economics, kinship, and community culture, call into question some common understandings about the traditional role of women and about changes initiated by World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law relating to town and country planning has a major impact upon the physical environment and affects private citizens, landowners and developers alike. This third edition is a comprehensive text for students, practitioners and members of the general public on this difficult area of law. Following the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, the third edition of Planning Law and Practice contains a complete revision of plan-making and the control of development as well as incorporating recent case law. Together this provides up-to-date details of the operation of the current English planning system. The successful format adopted in the first edition of this book, which was awarded the Gold Award for Best Reference Work by the Chartered Institute of Building in 1999, has been retained. Planning legislation is dealt with in the main chapters, while further chapters use relevant case law to amplify the sometimes complex statutory material. In addition, the book outlines other areas of land law such as European legislation, non-planning controls and public investment.

Book Town and Country Planning in England and Wales

Download or read book Town and Country Planning in England and Wales written by John B. Cullingworth and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1971-12-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Town and Country Planning machine is the most sophisticated in the world, yet its inadequacies are only too apparent to those who are familiar with its evolution and operation. During the last decade it has been in a constant state of change in an attempt to come to terms with the needs of a rapidly changing society. This work attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of the planning system and the ways in which it is changing. An historical introduction leads into an account of the machinery of planning and the major new provisions of the 1968 Town and Country Planning Act. Special attention is then paid to the problems of land values, amenity, derelict land, planning for leisure, new and expanding towns, urban renewal and the search for an adequate means of regional planning. The book ends with an examination of some of the fundamental problems of public acceptance of, and public participation in, a democratic system of planning. The book is aimed at the student and the general reader. It is not a legal text, but neither is it intended as a polemic.
