Book First Principles of the Reformation 95 Theses and Other Works

This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1517, Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church, and ultimately altered the course of European history, when he nailed his "95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences" on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. At the time, Renaissance humanists were beginning to oppose the reign of the Church and the wealth it accrued from taxes and the sale of Indulgences to the people. A monk and a scholar, Luther intended to promote independent thinking with the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He wanted people to read the words and understand God in terms of their own experience. Unsurprisingly, he was ordered by the pope to print a retraction, which he refused; he was ultimately excommunicated, and his action prompted the Protestant Reformation. This edition contains Martin Luther's "95 Theses," as well as the three other primary works of Martin Luther: "To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Respecting the Reformation of the Christian Estate," "Concerning Christian Liberty," and "On the Babylonish Captivity of the Church."

Book Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany

Download or read book Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany written by Charles Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany: Until the Close of the Diet of Worms My editorial duties have been hardly more than to see through the press a singularly and characteristically perfect manuscript; and they have been lightened by the faithful care with which Mrs. Beard and her son, Mr. Lewis Beard, b.a., have compared manuscript and proof. I have considered it needful, in order to guard against accidental error, to exercise a general supervision of the narrative, to compare quotations with the original passages, and to verify references. N o alterations have been introduced into the text or the notes, except where an obvious lapsus calami had crept in, which, however, thanks to the author's extreme accuracy, has happened but very occasionally. Here and there in the notes a reference to books or articles published since the manuscript was finished has been added. For the title of the volume, the headings of the chapters and the pages, and the list of the principal authorities and editions used by the author, I am responsible; and for the Index, Mr. Lewis Beard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Luther and the German Reformation Professor Leopold von Ranke may be taken as the most illustrious example of historians who have taught us to regard the Reformation as a great political force working political transformations not yet ended. It overthrew completely Jlfedicei'alism, and started the modern conditions of political life on their career. It destroyed the mediaeval ideal of a Christendom made visibly one by a supreme civil governor who ruled over the bodies of all men, by a supreme ecclesiastical chief who ruled their souls, and by a dominant scholastic which kept their minds in due submission, and red the marches between sanctified wisdom and unholy lore. The two and a half centuries before the Reformation are full of revolts against this Medimvalism. They saw the birth of modern European nations with con flieting interests, and the strong feelings of independent national life overthrew the mediaeval ideas of govern ment, both secular and ecclesiastical. The authority of emperor and pope had been defied by almost every European nation long before the times of our epoch; but the failure of Charles V. To restore the mediaeval empire in Germany may be taken as the date at which the old ideas of government passed away for ever.
