Book Access to Affordable Irrigation Technology for Small Farmers in Northern Ghana

Download or read book Access to Affordable Irrigation Technology for Small Farmers in Northern Ghana written by Annemarie Lagger and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) business strategies have been praised to tackle the problem of poverty by marketing to the BoP while generating new income opportunities for the private sector. Nevertheless, BoP business strategies have faced many obstacles to their successful implementation to date. This thesis examines factors critical to the implementation of a market-based approach at the BoP by the example of International Development Enterprises (IDE) Ghana. In particular, new models are presented of how to combine innovative financing models with new product and service developments to the end of making irrigation technologies affordable to smallholder farmers in northern Ghana while generating income opportunities for the private sector.

Book Smallholder irrigation technology diffusion in Ghana Insights from stakeholder mapping

Download or read book Smallholder irrigation technology diffusion in Ghana Insights from stakeholder mapping written by Atuobi-Yeboah, Afua and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigated agriculture can support food and nutrition security, increase rural employment and incomes and can act as a buffer against growing climate variability and change. However, irrigation development has been slow in Africa south of the Sahara and Ghana is no exception. Out of a total potential irrigated area of close to 2 million ha, less than 20,000 ha large-scale irrigation and less than 200,000 ha of small-scale irrigation have been developed; but the latter is only an estimate. To identify entry points for accelerating small-scale irrigation development in Ghana, a national and a regional stakeholder Net-Map workshop were held in Accra and Tamale, respectively. The workshops suggest that a wide variety of actors from government, the private sector, international organizations and funders, research organizations and NGOs are involved in the diffusion of small-scale irrigation technologies. However, there are important differences between actors perceived to be key at the national and at the regional levels in northern Ghana. At the national level, diffusion of small-scale irrigation technologies is considered to be largely influenced by the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority together with a series of private sector actors focused on importation, distribution and financing of technologies. Farmers are considered to have no influence over the diffusion of small-scale irrigation, suggesting that small-scale irrigation is largely considered a supply-driven process. In northern Ghana, on the other hand, farmers are considered to be key influencers, although participants noted that much of this was potential influence, together with a larger and more diversified set of government stakeholders that are seen as regulators and possibly gatekeepers. For irrigation diffusion to successfully move from importation to distribution to benefiting smallholder farmers, all of these actors have to come together to better understand farmers’ needs and challenges. A multi-stakeholder platform could help to increase communication between farmers as the ultimate beneficiaries of small-scale irrigation technologies and the many other actors interested in supporting this process.

Book Peddling Toward Prosperity

Download or read book Peddling Toward Prosperity written by Philip E. Auerswald and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the three billion people in the developing world, fully two-thirds live on small farms. Among them are over 800 million people who earn under a dollar a day or less -- the majority of those globally who endure absolute poverty. Smallholder farmers have meager incomes largely because the methods they employ undervalue their time, the scale of the plots they cultivate under-utilizes their assets, and the mix of crops they plant under-performs potential alternatives in the marketplace. One simple, proven solution to these three related problems exists: micro-irrigation. Around the world, most smallholder farmers who lack access to a stream or pond can reach water by digging a 5- to 60-foot well. Where available, technologies that are both affordable to dollar-a-day farmers and efficient for the irrigation of small plots from shallow wells provide a mechanism for increasing labor productivity, expanding planting options, extending the growing season, and obtaining higher prices in the market. The results are increased income and improved well-being for smallholder farmers. This profile describes an approach to building markets for micro-irrigation systems that has been successfully employed in South Asia and Africa, reaching more than two million households and typically boosting the incomes of small farmers by over 500 percent. The approach has three elements: designing agricultural tools, notably treadle-pumps and drip-irrigation systems, that can be used cost-effectively by dollar-a-day farmers; seeding supply chains to ensure broad availability; and innovating new marketing approaches in order to build market acceptance.

Book Sustainable Irrigation Development in the White Volta sub Basin

Download or read book Sustainable Irrigation Development in the White Volta sub Basin written by Eric Antwi Ofosu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa has an irrigation potential of about 42 million hectares of which only 17% is developed. Despite several investments in irrigation the growth is slow. This study aims at helping to achieve sustainable irrigation in sub-Saharan Africa, through gaining a better understanding of productive irrigation water use and effective management of irrigation development. The study is conducted in the White Volta sub-basin specifically in Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso which have been experiencing rapid irrigation development since the mid 1990s. The study identified growing markets for irrigated products as an important driving force behind the expansion of irrigation which has given rise to new technologies. The new technologies have spread because they gave farmers direct control over water sources. These new technologies allow relatively small farm sizes which can be adequately managed by the surveyed farmers. As a result high productivities are achieved. The hydrological impact of upscaling irrigation in the sub-basin is sustainable and will maximize the overall benefits derived from water resources in the Volta Basin.

Book Treadle pump irrigation and poverty in Ghana

Download or read book Treadle pump irrigation and poverty in Ghana written by Adeoti, Adeoti, Barry, Boubacar, Namara, Regassa, Kamara, Abdul, Titiati, Atsu and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2007 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treadle pump (TP) technology has been promoted by Enterprise Works Worldwide (EWW) as an alternative to the traditional rope and bucket irrigation that is necessary to overcome the challenge of uncertain and inadequate rainfall for agricultural production. The aim is to improve output, increase incomes and reduce poverty among farm households. This study examines the strategies used for dissemination of the TP and the dynamics of its adoption and impacts, with a special focus on poverty reduction. The results of the study reveal that time and labor savings for irrigation, increased size of irrigated areas and lack of fuel requirements are the attractive features of the TP for those who adopt it. Adoption of TP increases land and labor productivities; and also net farm incomes. The study also demonstrates that adoption of the TP reduces poverty.

The report closes by drawing some key lessons and offering nine recommendations for actions by African governments and the private sector.

Book Smallholder shallow groundwater irrigation development in the upper east region of Ghana

Download or read book Smallholder shallow groundwater irrigation development in the upper east region of Ghana written by and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, there is paucity of information on the potential of groundwater resources. The limited available information paints a pessimistic view about groundwater resources. Due to its perceived inadequate availability, groundwater is associated with domestic use but the potential for using it for agriculture is not well reflected in the national irrigation policies. Contrary to official pessimism, farmers do use groundwater for agriculture in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa including Ghana. This paper analyzes the current extent of use, economics, socioeconomic impacts, and constraints and opportunities of shallow groundwater irrigation based on the experiences of smallholders in the three micro-watersheds of the White Volta Basin in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
