Book Dialysis Access Current Practice

Download or read book Dialysis Access Current Practice written by Jacob A Akoh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-05-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incidence of treated end stage renal disease (ESRD) continues to rise, particularly in the western world. Although renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for ESRD, the decline in the number of cadaveric organs, coupled with the rising demand for transplantation, means that an increasing number of patients will have to depend on dialysis. Vascular or peritoneal access is the Achilles' heel of any dialysis service. This book offers a clear description of the state of the art in providing and preserving a durable and reliable access. It also points the way to dialysis in the 21st century. The contributing authors are drawn from a wide background, with expertise in various aspects of dialysis access, including its history, the technique of placement, anaesthesia, radiology, nursing care and training of vascular access surgeons. There is currently a dearth of books on the subject of dialysis access. The few existing books on vascular access were written in the United States, with none from the UK. This volume is intended for use by transplant surgeons, general surgeons with an interest in vascular access, vascular surgeons, nephrologists, trainees and nurses. Dialysis services are expanding worldwide and this book is an invaluable guide for those involved in daily patient care and organisation of dialysis services.

Book Current Approaches to Improving Access to Government Documents

Download or read book Current Approaches to Improving Access to Government Documents written by Carol A. Turner and published by Washington, D.C. : Association of Research Libraries, Office of Management Studies. This book was released on 1987 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the responses of 77 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries to a December 1986 survey of 106 ARL libraries (a 73% response rate), this report profiles the current state of bibliographic access to federal publications. Following a brief discussion of survey background and methodology, a summary of survey results indicates that the typical respondent became a depository in 1912, selects 80% of the items offered on deposit, and maintains a centralized U.S. document collection. In addition, issues and needs for bibliographic access are identified, and case studies are presented for the following approaches to access: (1) the shelflist and printed indexes (Dartmouth College); (2) traditional cataloging (Pennsylvania State University and Cornell University); (3) loading the GPO (Government Printing Office) tapes (New York State Library, the University of Florida, Rice University, and Texas A&M University); and (4) retrospective conversion (Case Western Reserve University, the University of Cincinnati, Cornell University, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of California at Irvine). Finally, options and recommendations are presented for future action by individual libraries and cooperative programs. A federal depository collection profile and approaches to bibliographic access to U.S. federal government publications are presented in two tables. A 12-item selected bibliography and the survey form are also provided. (KM)

Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary study of the Kuroshio nutrient stream The surface water of the Kuroshio, a western boundary current in the North Pacific Ocean, is nutrient-depleted and has relatively low primary productivity, yet abundant fish populations are supported in the region. This is called the “Kuroshio Paradox”. Kuroshio Current: Physical, Biogeochemical and Ecosystem Dynamics presents research from a multidisciplinary team that conducted observational and modeling studies to investigate this contradiction. This timely and important contribution to the ocean sciences literature provides a comprehensive analysis of the Kuroshio. Volume highlights include: New insights into the role of the Kuroshio as a nutrient stream The first interdisciplinary examination of the Kuroshio Paradox Reflections on the influence of the Kuroshio on Japanese culture Research results on both the lower and higher trophic levels in the Kuroshio ecosystem Comparisons of nutrient dynamics in the Kuroshio and Gulf Stream Predictions of ecosystem responses to future climate variability
