Book excerpt: The purpose for conducting the study was to examine factors related to rural low-income, first generation college students' obstacles to community college enrollment. The study examined barriers students overcame to attend college and focused on rural college students from two community colleges in Missouri and Arkansas. The following questions guided the research: 1. What attendance barriers did rural community college students identify as being most difficult for them to overcome? 2. Were there differences between the self-identified attendance barriers based on gender for male and female rural community college students? 3. Were there differences in attendance barriers for rural community college students based on whether they enrolled immediately out of high school or postponed attendance? 4. Were there differences in attendance barriers for rural community college students based on low-income or first generation classifications? A purposeful sample was chosen and 170 surveys were collected overall. Results were tabulated using descriptive statistics. The survey results showed that respondents believed their cumulative GPA had a great deal of influence on their decision to enroll at the local, rural community college. Financial aid eligibility and if the student's parents had attended a community college or university also played a major role in their successful enrollment.

The purpose of this study was to examine how factors such as rurality, race and class impact rural African American students access to higher education. Rural African American students are an underrepresented population within the realm of higher education and their experiences are often missing from research. The aim of this study is to provide greater insight into the barriers rural African American students face accessing higher education. Through individual in-depth interviews, this study examined the educational experiences of six African American students and their reflection on living in a rural community, schooling and ways they navigated the college enrollment process. This study adds to the limited literature on the experiences of rural African American students and college access. Results of the study reveal how the intersectionality of rurality, race and class must be considered when addressing the college access problem for rural African American students.

Book excerpt: For first-generation college-going students, education is an opportunity to break out of their inherited socioeconomic status. Though this resource is available to first-generation college students, they are not accessing postsecondary opportunities as much as their non-first- generation counterparts. Prior research has shown that students with college educated parents have a greater advantage in accessing higher education over first-generation college students. Most first-generation college students and their parents have limited access to social networks and information, and this causes a reliance on the K-12 system for direct guidance in their quest to higher education. This dissertation explores the challenges and successes first-generation college students face in accessing higher education. Interviews were conducted with fifteen first-year, first- generation college students from a mid-size public university. Data were analyzed and coded for themes and patterns. The goal was to gain insight into these students' stories and the factors they identify as key in increasing their access to higher education. Findings show that first-generation students find motivation through their families. Not all motivation comes from positive family experiences, but these students desire to attend college so they can have a "better life" with or without the support of their families. The K-12 system continues to provide procedural information and access to higher education, but the process seems to start too late for many students. Most students recall receiving college information in high school but not so much in elementary or middle school. Teachers, counselor and programs provide access to higher education but these supports vary from school to school. Though first-generation students are making it to college, they struggle to understand the financial aspects of higher education and therefore limit their selection to colleges that are affordable rather than their "dream schools." This study yields important implications that can assist aspiring first-generation college students. This research also has the potential to assist and guide educational systems in better supporting the needs of these students.

However, most community college students do not graduate; many earn no credits and may leave school with no more advantages in the labor market than if they had never attended. Experts disagree over the reason for community colleges' mixed record. Is it that the students in these schools are under-prepared and ill-equipped for the academic rigors of college? Are the colleges themselves not adapting to keep up with the needs of the new kinds of students they are enrolling? In After Admission, James Rosenbaum, Regina Deil-Amen, and Ann Person weigh in on this debate with a close look at this important trend in American higher education. After Admission compares community colleges with private occupational colleges that offer accredited associates degrees. The authors examine how these different types of institutions reach out to students, teach them social and cultural skills valued in the labor market, and encourage them to complete a degree. Rosenbaum, Deil-Amen, and Person find that community colleges are suffering from a kind of identity crisis as they face the inherent complexities of guiding their students towards four-year colleges or to providing them with vocational skills to support a move directly into the labor market. This confusion creates administrative difficulties and problems allocating resources. However, these contradictions do not have to pose problems for students. After Admission shows that when colleges present students with clear pathways, students can effectively navigate the system in a way that fits their needs. The occupational colleges the authors studied employed close monitoring of student progress, regular meetings with advisors and peer cohorts, and structured plans for helping students meet career goals in a timely fashion. These procedures helped keep students on track and, the authors suggest, could have the same effect if implemented at community colleges. As college access grows in America, institutions must adapt to meet the needs of a new generation of students. After Admission highlights organizational innovations that can help guide students more effectively through higher education.
