Book Here s How to Do Accent Modification

Download or read book Here s How to Do Accent Modification written by Robert McKinney and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's How to Do Accent Modification: A Manual for Speech-Language Pathologists is designed for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working with clients on accent modification in American English. A growing number of non-native speakers are interested in improving their communication skills and SLPs need preparation to work with this clientele. The text provides copious advice and many diverse techniques for teaching accent modification, from the level of basic sounds to the level of discourse. The text emphasizes realistic goal setting, so that clients focus on becoming effective communicators as opposed to sounding exactly like native speakers. The objective is a balance between clear and natural speech. Many SLPs favor intelligibility over naturalness because of their backgrounds working with speech delayed children, but with non-native speakers this often leads to unnatural speech and listeners focus on how something is said as opposed to what is said. Here's How to Do Accent Modification is uniquely geared toward the skills and backgrounds of SLPs working with clients in a one-on-one setting, but is also an excellent introductory text for any English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher. Robert McKinney brings this unique perspective as a speech-language pathologist with degrees in both Communication Disorders and Teaching English as a Second Language. Also included with the text are numerous practical activities and worksheets for working with clients. The ebook includes audio files and video clips to demonstrate working with non-native speakers.

Book Remediation of r for Speech Language Pathologists

Download or read book Remediation of r for Speech Language Pathologists written by Peter Flipsen Jr. and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating older children and adolescents who have difficulty correctly producing /r/ sounds remains an ongoing source of frustration for many clinicians. The new professional resource Remediation of /r/ for Speech-Language Pathologists provides the most up-to-date information on the current understanding of /r/ and the related errors, along with a range of treatment options, to offer a comprehensive tool for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) treating this complex issue. In addition to a discussion of traditional articulation therapy and ways to improve the administration of this technique, this practical text offers a detailed review and explanation of several very promising alternative approaches. Written in what has been described as Dr. Flipsen's "folksy" style, this text is designed for the busy clinician. The first five chapters of Remediation of /r/ for Speech-Language Pathologists delve into the basic information needed to treat /r/. The next six chapters each tackle a specific treatment option. The treatment section begins with a re-examination of traditional articulation therapy and uses research evidence to help clinicians to fine-tune its application. It then progresses to discussing more significant modifications to traditional therapy and introduces several newer approaches to modifying the feedback being provided to the client. For each treatment option, the author presents a solid rationale and the latest evidence, along with practical strategies for their implementation. The final chapter discusses methods for deciding which remediation method to choose when working with /r/ errors.

This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering the American Accent is an easy-to-follow approach for reducing the accent of non-native speakers of English. The audio program provides clear models (both male and female) to help coach a standard American accent. The program is designed to help users speak Standard American English with clarity, confidence, and accuracy. The many exercises in the book concentrate on topics such as vowel sounds, problematic consonants such as V, W, TH, the American R and T and others. Correct lip and tongue positions for all sounds are discussed in detail. Beyond the production of sounds, the program provides detailed instruction in prosodic elements such as syllable stress, emphasis, intonation, linking words for smoother speech flow, common word contractions, and much more. Additional topics that often confuse ESL students are also discussed and explained. They include distinguishing between casual and formal speech, homophones (e.g., they're and there), recognizing words with silent letters (e.g., comb, receipt), and avoiding embarrassing pronunciation mistakes, such as mixing up "pull" and "pool." Students are familiarized with many irregular English spelling rules and exceptions, and are shown how such irregularities can contribute to pronunciation errors. A native language guide references problematic accent issues for 13 different language backgrounds. Book excerpt: Speech-language pathologists and language teachers working with foreign-born language learners recognize how difficult it can be to learn the prosodic features of American English. TEAM (Technology Enhanced Accent Modification) is an instructional approach to accent modification that uses computerized displays and feedback to enable non-native speakers of English to see as well as hear the features of their accent that make their English speech difficult to understand. They can see features such as monotone, excessive rate, inappropriate syllable stress, deletion of sounds or syllables, or misarticulation of certain sounds. By comparing displays of their utterances with displays of model utterances containing the appropriate feature, they can see the discrepancies and practice until their version matches the model. TEAM has six components: software for the retrieval, display, and playback of model utterances of speech features for your clients; a 37-item computer-based Accent Survey that assists in identifying features of accent that need to be modified; a curriculum that addresses the 15 features of speech that make accents most difficult to understand; an instructional methodology designed to enable your client to assume control for monitoring as well as modifying his/her accent; a database of 3600 (1800 male and 1800 female) model utterances; and a reference manual describing the operation of the program.
