Book Acceleration Measurements on Naval Vessels Undergoing Explosive Shock Testing

Download or read book Acceleration Measurements on Naval Vessels Undergoing Explosive Shock Testing written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In shock testing a naval vessel many accelerometers, may be located on board the vessel to measure its response from the underwater blast wave. Accelerometers are positioned on the structure at locations such as the outer hull plating, bulkheads and superstructure. Other locations include ship's equipment such as the power plant, control systems and electronic instrumentation. It is a difficult task to identify suitable locations for measurements because of the large size of the naval structure and the complex behavior of the structure arising from the interaction of the blast wave with the vessel. The aim of this report is to present some of the work undertaken at DSTO-Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) on acceleration measurements, and to discuss the issues raised in selecting accelerometer locations.

Book Shipboard Shock and Navy Devices for Its Simulation

Download or read book Shipboard Shock and Navy Devices for Its Simulation written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most damaging aspects of the combat environment to which Navy ships are exposed is the mechanical shock resulting from the explosion of warheads. The detonation of a large weapon at a considerable distance from the ship produces a shipboard shock environment throughout the entire ship which is potentially damaging to all shipboard equipment and systems. Information has been accumulated on the characteristics and operation of the devices specified by MIL-S-901 for the shock testing of shipboard equipment--the Navy HI Class Shock Machines and the Floating Shock Platform. Other shock machines are also used by the Navy and other services but are not considered here. This material has been gathered from many sources, most of which are not readily accessible, and is intended to provide background information. Equipments are accepted for shipboard use if they comply satisfactorily with the shock test and design procedures prescribed by MIL-S-901.

Book The Effect of Stiffener Smearing in a Ship Like Box Structure Subjected to an Underwater Explosion

Download or read book The Effect of Stiffener Smearing in a Ship Like Box Structure Subjected to an Underwater Explosion written by Keith A. Beiter and published by . This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock trials for naval vessels are a requirement for each new class of surface ships in the U.S. Navy. With understanding the technology of underwater shock analysis and considering the rising costs of conducting actual shock tests, computer simulation of shock trials is becoming more and more attractive. Unfortunately, finite element models can be quite large and require sufficient amounts of computer memory and time to run a shock analysis. This thesis investigates the effects of reducing the element size of a ship-like box model subjected to an underwater explosion. Known as smearing, this process combines the density and stiffness properties of the removed elements into the remaining material of the model. Positive results from computer simulation could greatly affect the manner in which shock trials are conducted with future ship classes.
