Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Braconidae of the Middle East (Hymenoptera): Taxonomy, Distribution, Biology, and Biocontrol Benefits of Parasitoid Wasps provides the latest and most comprehensive knowledge of parasitoid wasp species. The highest concentration of these species is native to, or found in, the Middle East. This book covers the distribution of these species across the Palearctic region and their widespread global benefits as natural biocontrol agents. Each chapter covers a braconid subfamily, providing introductory information on its biology and phylogeny, total number of species, global distribution, and how they can be used to control pests and invasive insect species. In addition, this book discusses the importance of integrated pest management, specifically how Braconidae can be used for one-time or repeated introduction to natural enemies in suppressing pest populations. Finally, each chapter offers an illustrative key for readers to visualize and identify each species. Offers braconid taxonomy, biology, phylogeny and host-parasitoid relationships Provides illustrated identification keys to visualize and identify each species Includes global distribution of braconids in other regions Discusses braconid benefits as natural biocontrol agents

Book Aphid Parasites Hymenoptera Aphidiidae of the Central Asian Area

Download or read book Aphid Parasites Hymenoptera Aphidiidae of the Central Asian Area written by P. Starý and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the particular topics in biological control programmes all over the world indicates an increased interest in the utilization of aphid parasites. Besides the so-called traditional biological control of introduced aphids, there appears a situation which could perhaps be called a renaissance of biocontrol, i. e. the utilization of biotic agents against insecticide-resistant populations of aphid pests. The rapid increase in the amount of information as well as the necessity of syntheti cal papers are the well-known features in today's entomology. This requirement is much more topical in the groups where brief summarized information is needed for research workers in applied branches. The author has been well aware of all these difficulties and requirements owing to his own experience both in basic and applied research. Several years ago he decided to summarize our knowledge on the aphid parasites of the world by elaborating synthetical studies on the particular zoogeographical areas. These papers have been intended to represent annotated reviews of the parasite fauna, distribution, biologies and utilization in aphid pest management, with keys to genera and species, hos- parasite catalogue, and a list of references added. Naturally, these studies are only relatively updated, with respect to a certain deadline from which the research may be further continued. At present, the Far East Asian and the Mediterranean areas have been reviewed in this or at least in a similar manner.

Book Fluid Preservation

Download or read book Fluid Preservation written by John E. Simmons and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid preservation refers to specimens and objects that are preserved in fluids, most commonly alcohol and formaldehyde, but also glycerin, mineral oil, acids, glycols, and a host of other chemicals that protect the specimen from deterioration. Some of the oldest natural history specimens in the world are preserved in fluid. Despite the fact that fluid preservation has been practiced for more than 350 years, this is the only handbook that summarize all that is known about this complex and often confusing topic. Fluid Preservation: A Comprehensive Reference covers the history and techniques of fluid preservation and how to care for fluid preserved specimens in collections. More than 900 references on fluid preservation were reviewed for this project. An historical survey of preservative recipes provides for guidance for museums with older collections (many fluid preservatives contain hazardous chemicals). Current standards and best practices for collection care and management are presented. Current and controversial topics (e.g., the preservation of DNA, alternatives to alcohol and formaldehyde) are discussed and fully referenced. Health and safety issues involved with caring for fluid preserved collections are discussed. The final chapter addresses fluid preserved specimens as cultural products and their use in art, literature, film, and song. Although most fluid-preserved specimens are found in natural history and medical museums, it is not at all uncommon to find them in art museums, history museums, and science centers. In addition to animals, plants, and anatomical specimens, fluid preserved collections include some minerals and fossils and many other objects. Fluid Preservation is an essential reference for: Natural history curators Natural history collections managers Conservators Medical and anatomical museum collections managers and curators Art and history museum staff who have fluid preserved specimens and objects in their care (e.g., works by Damien Hirst) Private collectors Researchers using museum collections as sources of DNA, isotopes, etc. Health and safety professionals Exhibit planners and designers Museum facilities planners and managers People interested in the history of science People interested in the history of natural history museums Museum studies students

This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Natural History of the Acalephae of North America The study of such animals is therefore of high physiological importance, as it will enlarge our views of animal functions, and give more precision to our ideas of cellular life; and the more so, because in this, as well as in several other naked-eyed Medusa, we can satisfy ourselves with the greatest ease, that the different organs which per form here different functions are entirely and exclusively composed Of cells; not in the same sense as it can be said of the body of higher organisms, but strictly so, the cells here not undergoing any extensive metamorphosis by which they are transformed into distinct tissues of different structures, though derived from cells. Here they preserve the appearance of indisputable cells, combined in various ways, slightly modified in differ ent parts of the body, but everywhere to be recognized as cells although performing the most heterogeneous functions. Here a heap of large cells, containing a crystal-like, more consistent uid, constitutes the main mass of the body. Other series of somewhat elongated, more or less bottle-shaped, contractile cells, elongating and shortening alternate ly, constitute bundles or layers of an apparently fibrous tissue, which is, however, only an accumulation of slightly modified cells representing the muscular system, and acting as such with as much energy as the striated muscles; though here we have no muscular bundles proper, no primitive fibres whatever, no striation upon the contractile tissue, but cells, the walls of which are contractile and act as muscles.
