Book excerpt: From palm trees that grow in the Amazon estuary in northern Brazil comes a fruit with high levels of health-promoting antioxidant anthocyanins (free-radical fighters). Free radicals are molecules with an unpaired electron that are constantly in search of molecules in our bodies to bond with, resulting in DNA damage and a cascade of deleterious reactions that can cause cancer and heart disease, make us sick, make us age, and make us die. Acai's antioxidants act as search-and-destroy missiles against oxidative stress caused by free radicals. With many acai products to choose from-whole fruit, juices, concentrates, and supplements-how do we know which is the most effective? Book Systematic Pomology Vol 1 2 Set

Download or read book Systematic Pomology Vol 1 2 Set written by O.P. Pareek and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is aimed to be a treatise on the ‘Systematic Pomology’, the primary component of science of fruits, dealing with identification, nomenclature and classification of fruit species based on the descriptions of characteristics related to their morphological, genetical, physiological, biochemical, biotechnological and eco-attributes. Besides taxonomic narrative of each species under the respective orders and genera, considerable emphasis has been laid on cultivars. The treatment is based on the latest version of Nomenclature and Phylogenetic System of Classification (APG III). The book is richly illustrated with diagrams and colour plates and carries fairly exhaustive bibliography and glossary. Thus, the book is of high academic value for research workers/teachers, students and anyone interested in advanced fruit culture to provide insight in identifying and classifying fruit plants, providing standard nomenclature and terminology, in avoiding the confusion from synonymy and promoting correct labeling, to understand their genetic relations, in establishing or maintaining a garden, a germplasm block, a research orchard or even herbaria, in identification of new genotypes or cultivars for introduction and in deciding orchard management practices as well as methods of utilization, in using the correct related cultivars kept in a genetic resources repository for improvement considering the limits of hybridization, and in selecting genetic material for a breeding programme considering their taxonomic proximities and specific characters related to fruit bearing, regularity, nutritive and edible quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and plant stature and form.

Book Causes and consequences of acai palm management in the Amazon estuary Brasil

Download or read book Causes and consequences of acai palm management in the Amazon estuary Brasil written by S. Weinstein and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harvest of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is frequently promoted as a means to provide income to rural people while conserving forest resources. The acai palm (Euterpe oleracea) dominates the floodplain forests of the Amazon estuary and has two commercially important NTFPs: its fruit, acai, which is used to make a staple beverage, and its apical meristem, palmito, which is exported as edible palm heart. Because E. oleracea grows in multi-stemmed clumps, management allows rural inhabitants (ribeirinhos) to benefit economically from both fruit and palmito sales. However, overharvesting of palmito has been documented in some regions of the estuary. Thus, it is important to understand what factors influence sustainable use of this palm. This study evaluates the conservation potential of the acai palm by addressing two main questions. "How do palmito and fruit management affect acai populations?". and "What socieconomic variables influence management decisions?" In orfer to answer these questions, twenty-five households were interviewed from areas (Combu Island, Abaetaetuba, Igarape Miri, Oeiras do Para and Breves), and measurements were taken from areas where acai is harvested from each household's forest. Interviews provided data on acai and palmito management, harversting frequencies, marketing strategies and seasonal sources of income. The effect of management on acai forests was determined for each household by calculating acai clump density, size class distributions and clearing around the palms.
