Book excerpt: You're about to enter college, and you have to take general chemistry. Fear overwhelms you, because you hate chemistry, never did well at it, and all the well-meaning help wasn't very helpful at all. But you need to pass general chemistry with a decent grade on your way to nursing or other health professional school. But just beholding the girth of the textbook is enough to make you sweat, and those million other "help" books are just more of the same!Don't Over React! breaks down chemistry into easy to swallow topics in plain language that will convince you of your ability to succeed in your course. No, it doesn't replace your textbook, but runs alongside during the course to clarify the material and help carry you through the storm. Before you know it, with Don't Over React!, you will emerge from general chemistry confidently and successfully to pursue your academic goals, and you may actually fall in love with the subject. Imagine that!Since the early '80s, by the spoken and written word, live in person and via Zoom, Dr. Eric Chesloff has been hard at work breaking down learning barriers to understanding perhaps our most vital physical science that invariably touches all our lives. This is the culmination of that effort.

Book Preparing Two year College Students for General Chemistry Using ALEKSu00ae

Download or read book Preparing Two year College Students for General Chemistry Using ALEKSu00ae written by Virginia L Miller and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Chemistry I (CHEM131) is a high-enrollment, gateway course that is required for nearly every STEM degree program at Montgomery College, a two-year college in the suburbs of Washington, DC. It requires students to have a good foundation in mathematics and some background chemistry knowledge and as a result, proper preparation for CHEM131 is critical for student success and completion. The Chemistry Department is currently piloting the use of ALEKSu00ae in lieu of its traditional face-to-face remedial course (CHEM099) to prepare students for entry into this college-level general chemistry course. ALEKSu00ae (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces) is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system that uses adaptive questioning to accurately determine a studentu2019s knowledge level in a particular subject. This presentation will focus on how the Chemistry Department implemented this alternative preparation option for students, the topics covered in the ALEKSu00ae module compared to CHEM099, and the corresponding success rates in CHEM131 for students who completed ALEKSu00ae compared to students who completed CHEM099. The advantages and challenges involved in the implementation of this ALEKSu00ae system in a two-year college setting will also be discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at programs for advanced studies for high school students in the United States, with a particular focus on the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate programs, and asks how advanced studies can be significantly improved in general. It also examines two of the core issues surrounding these programs: they can have a profound impact on other components of the education system and participation in the programs has become key to admission at selective institutions of higher education. By looking at what could enhance the quality of high school advanced study programs as well as what precedes and comes after these programs, this report provides teachers, parents, curriculum developers, administrators, college science and mathematics faculty, and the educational research community with a detailed assessment that can be used to guide change within advanced study programs.

Book excerpt: A coloring book to familiarize the user with the Primary elements in the Periodic Table. The Periodic Table Coloring Book (PTCB) was received worldwide with acclaim. It is based on solid, proven concepts. By creating a foundation that is applicable to all science ("Oh yes, Hydrogen, I remember coloring it, part of water, it is also used as a fuel; I wonder how I could apply this to the vehicle engine I am studying...") and creating enjoyable memories associated with the elements science becomes accepted. These students will be interested in chemistry, engineering and other technical areas and will understand why those are important because they have colored those elements and what those elements do in a non-threatening environment earlier in life.

Book Ungrading

Download or read book Ungrading written by Susan Debra Blum and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moment is right for critical reflection on what has been assumed to be a core part of schooling. In Ungrading, fifteen educators write about their diverse experiences going gradeless. Some contributors are new to the practice and some have been engaging in it for decades. Some are in humanities and social sciences, some in STEM fields. Some are in higher education, but some are the K-12 pioneers who led the way. Based on rigorous and replicated research, this is the first book to show why and how faculty who wish to focus on learning, rather than sorting or judging, might proceed. It includes honest reflection on what makes ungrading challenging, and testimonials about what makes it transformative. CONTRIBUTORS: Aaron Blackwelder Susan D. Book An Expert Performance Approach to Examining Factors Contributing to Academic Success in Organic Chemistry

Download or read book An Expert Performance Approach to Examining Factors Contributing to Academic Success in Organic Chemistry written by Kiruthiga Nandagopal and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Successful completion of the introductory course in organic chemistry is a prerequisite for many graduate and professional science programs, yet the failure rate for this course is notoriously high. To date, there have been few studies examining factors contributing to academic success in organic chemistry. This study demonstrates that the online, longitudinal methods used by investigations of expert performance can examine and successfully identify factors contributing to academic success at the college level. Sixty-four students enrolled in introductory organic chemistry during the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters completed motivation questionnaires, interviews, diaries, and think-aloud reading and problem-solving tasks at three different points across a semester. Measures of spatial ability, general ability, and background preparation were also collected. Each measure was analyzed to determine significant differences between groups differing in grade-point average (GPA) prior to the start of the course and to identify predictors of organic chemistry grade. Variables measuring background preparation, problem-solving strategies and studying strategies were found to be the best predictors of academic success in organic chemistry. Implications for instruction in organic chemistry and effective studying behaviors are discussed.
