Book Academic Success Among Softball and Baseball Student athletes in Alabama Rural Community Colleges

Download or read book Academic Success Among Softball and Baseball Student athletes in Alabama Rural Community Colleges written by Ryan Gerald Spry and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges have come under increased scrutiny lately for their low retention and graduation rates, but these institutions are not the only focal point of public criticism. Intercollegiate athletics has recently been admonished for its emphasis on athletic excellence, often in place of academic achievement. Alabama Community College Conference member institutions, however, lack empirical evidence that identifies whether these assertions are evident within the ACCC, thus preventing campus leaders from implementing strategies designed to enhance lower student success rates among student-athletes enrolled at their schools. Therefore, this study sought to determine rates of student success among Alabama community college baseball and softball players. In particular, the research explored which demographic factors might be useful in predicting these student-athletes' cumulative community college grade point averages, as well as retention rates and degree completion rates. Univariate analyses, along with linear and logistic regression methodologies, were employed to analyze the data and to answer the six research questions. The sample used for this study included baseball and softball players previously enrolled at three Alabama rural community colleges. Results indicated females, White student-athletes, those from a higher socioeconomic status, and student-athletes earning high school diplomas each outperformed their counterparts. Within all three regression models, gender was noted as a significant predictor, followed by socioeconomic status in two of the three regression analyses (cumulative community college grade point average and degree completion rates), then race and educational background in one analysis (retention rates and cumulative community college grade point average respectively).

Book Characteristics Student Engagement and the Relation to Academic Performance of Rural Community College Athletes

Download or read book Characteristics Student Engagement and the Relation to Academic Performance of Rural Community College Athletes written by Connie Matthew Little and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural community colleges are the only institutions of higher education for huge swaths of the United States. Their role in their communities requires them to serve a variety of functions, from education provider, to economic development center, to a source of entertainment. Often this entertainment comes in the form of community college athletics. As rural community colleges make up 61% of community college athletics programs (Bush, et al., 2009; Casten̳eda, et al., 2006), these changes can impact a large number of students and communities. Despite the importance of this facet of rural community colleges, little is known about their athletes. This quantitative study sought to provide information regarding this oft-ignored area of intercollegiate athletics and provide information regarding the students who participate in this endeavor and their engagement with their institutions through their educational mission. This study was designed to explore and compare the student engagement of rural community college student athletes to the student engagement benchmarks of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). Determining if there was a predictive relationship, when controlling for background characteristics, between student athlete benchmark scores and self-reported GPA, was done through regression analysis. The results found that rural community college student athletes differ greatly from the general characteristics of rural community college students, and they are engaged in the campus at a high rate through almost all of the benchmarks. Race and academic preparedness greatly affected reported GPAs and all of the benchmarks were factors in predicting GPA, though not all positively.

Book The Impact of Academic and Athletic Motivation on the Academic Achievement of Community College Student athletes

Download or read book The Impact of Academic and Athletic Motivation on the Academic Achievement of Community College Student athletes written by Karyn L. Schulz and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When students enter college, most face common challenges such as learning to balance school and work, experiencing different expectations of college courses, and meeting and working with a diverse student body and faculty. The student-athlete faces these challenges as well as others. The student-athlete must learn not only to balance school and new expectations but also to adjust to the addition of practices, training sessions, and games to his or her full schedule of courses. Some student-athletes become celebrities, adding another demand to their already full load. Many community college student-athletes view the community college athletic program as a step towards playing at a Division I institution or even being recruited by a professional sports team. The probability is low, however, that community college student-athletes will go further in their sport, and is even smaller when it comes to becoming a professional athlete, Thus, is the reason for attending the community college for some athletes based on athletic and career motivation or academic motivation? Do student-athletes identify themselves as students or as athletes? -- Abstract.

Book Successful African American Community College Student Athletes Perceptions of Factors of Academic Success

Download or read book Successful African American Community College Student Athletes Perceptions of Factors of Academic Success written by Tanika Lee Byrd and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California community colleges are facing serious obstacles in relation to students of color achieving academic success. African American men see the community college as a pathway toward economic and social mobility; however, collectively they have disparate outcomes in every conceivable marker of success; persistence, achievement, transfer, completion. The live experiences of academically successful community college student athletes may hold key factors that can assist all African American males in their journey toward academic success. Even though research is limited, it is suggested that student athletes at the community college achieve their academic goals at higher rates than their nonathlete peers. Rebuking the deficit model that often drives research pertaining to students of color, the purpose of this study was to (a) explore the perceptions of successful African American male community college student athletes and their sense of campus culture (i.e., environment/belonging) as it pertains to academic success, and (b) to explore the successful African American male community college student athletes' perspective of support services factors that influenced completion of their academic goal. A total of 11 African American male student athletes were sampled from community colleges in northern and southern California. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to explore each participants' perceptions of factors of success. The data was categorized into three overarching themes; (a) perceived factors of success, (b) the role of student support services; and (c) campus culture and environment. This study provides key insight on the key factors that influence successful completion of a certificate, associate's degree, or transfer to a 4 year college for African American male student athletes enrolled in community college. This research study was designed to honor the lived experiences of African American male student athletes who have persisted and were successful at the California community college. Their journey towards academic success is valued as legitimate knowledge.

Book Collegiate Student athletes Academic Success

Download or read book Collegiate Student athletes Academic Success written by Kai'Iah A. James and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation study examines the impact of traditional and non-cognitive variables on the academic prediction model for a sample of collegiate student-athletes. Three hundred and fifty-nine NCAA Division IA male and female student-athletes, representing 13 sports, including football and men's and women's basketball provided demographic information (i.e., race, academic classification, gender, scholarship status) and provided responses to the Academic Communication Anxiety Test instrument. The Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services provided precollege and college academic information (high school GPA, SAT/ACT score, collegiate GPA) and this information along with data provided by the participants was entered into a multiple regression analysis. The purpose of the study was to determine which variables predicted student-athlete college GPA and if participation in a revenue-generating versus a nonrevenue-generating sport impacted college GPA. The analyses indicated that the ACAT was a valid and reliable measure (alpha = .94) with three factors. In addition, high school core GPA, study hall hour requirement, academic classification, and pre-college standardized test score made significant contributions to the prediction equation. Participation in a revenue-generating sport was found to significantly impact GPA.
