Book The Knowledge Gap

  • Author : Natalie Wexler
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2020-08-04
  • ISBN : 0735213569
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book The Knowledge Gap written by Natalie Wexler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the root cause of America's education crisis--and the seemingly endless cycle of multigenerational poverty. It was only after years within the education reform movement that Natalie Wexler stumbled across a hidden explanation for our country's frustrating lack of progress when it comes to providing every child with a quality education. The problem wasn't one of the usual scapegoats: lazy teachers, shoddy facilities, lack of accountability. It was something no one was talking about: the elementary school curriculum's intense focus on decontextualized reading comprehension "skills" at the expense of actual knowledge. In the tradition of Dale Russakoff's The Prize and Dana Goldstein's The Teacher Wars, Wexler brings together history, research, and compelling characters to pull back the curtain on this fundamental flaw in our education system--one that fellow reformers, journalists, and policymakers have long overlooked, and of which the general public, including many parents, remains unaware. But The Knowledge Gap isn't just a story of what schools have gotten so wrong--it also follows innovative educators who are in the process of shedding their deeply ingrained habits, and describes the rewards that have come along: students who are not only excited to learn but are also acquiring the knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to succeed. If we truly want to fix our education system and unlock the potential of our neediest children, we have no choice but to pay attention.

In fact, surveys have found that most students identify academic pressure as the main reason for their stress. While it has long been assumed that struggling students are most prone to academic stress, recent studies indicate that high achievers are especially vulnerable to school-related stress. This Information Capsule summarizes the consequences of chronic school-related stress, including decreases in academic performance, frequent physical illnesses, and cheating. Causes of school-related stress, such as overly demanding academic content, overbooked schedules, and pressure to maintain high grades and gain acceptance to prestigious colleges, are also reviewed. Finally, strategies designed to help schools, parents, and students alleviate school-related stress are presented. (Contains 1 table.).

Stress and anxiety levels affect the students academically and change the way the person thinks and acts during school or time spent in studying. Stress exists from the change in an individual's thinking and their lifestyle nowadays. Students in their teens are the ones who are going through the transitional phase, which is an intermediate of childhood and adulthood. Stress is believed to be caused by the various problems that exist such as problems at school, financial problems, family problems and problems in their surroundings. Adolescents also experience stress because they are sometimes trapped between making decisions which is to follow rules and orders or to be free and discover the world like they should. Adolescents in the previous days were trained for things that were suitable with their age so that they can use it to manage their lives. The main focus of this study is to find out the academic stress among IX and X class students and identify variables causing stress.

Book Stress and Coping of English Learners

Download or read book Stress and Coping of English Learners written by Teresa Rishel and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress and Coping of English Learners addresses the many ways that ELs face academic and socioemotional stress in the K–12 school environment, the consequences of this stress at school, how they cope with this stress, and how school personnel and families can provide support and help. While enrollment in school programs offers assistance to many ELs, it often fails to provide the socioemotional support that ELs need as they navigate the rough waters of schooling. American schooling is often not prepared and/or unwilling to help ELs as they adapt to an unfamiliar language, culture, social norms, communication techniques, and teachers' expectations. Given the proper foundation and emotional support, ELs will be positioned for greater academic success, comfort at school, and a decrease in their sense of alienation in both the school environment and at home as they try to negotiate between two cultural environments.

The term 'stress' refers to the psychological state which derives from a person's appraisal of the success with which he or she can cope to the demands of the environment. In other words, it is the reaction of the mind and body to change. How one responds to stress is determined by how one evaluates the change. The process of cognitive appraisal involves monitoring of four aspects of a person's transaction with his environment and the continual balance between them. The four aspects are the following: 1. Demands made on the person 2. Their personal characteristics and coping resources 3. Constraints under which they have to cope 4. The support they receive from others Stress can be experienced in a variety of situations, including family situations, work situations, interpersonal situations, academic situations, etc. Out of a number of stresses faced by adolescents and young adults, academic stress emerges as a significant mental problem in recent years."

Although, learning is a life-long process, but to create a strong foundation of a well-educated child, his formative year's education is very important. Moreover, if child is facing some kind of learning disability, than this process of education become more complex. The term 'Learning disability', was first introduced by an American psychologist, Samuel Alexander Kirk in 1962. As the term suggest, Learning Disability (LD) is a kind of dysfunction in learning through conventional methods. Usually, Learning disabilities are classified as neurobiological disorder because these disabilities are the byproduct of disrupted neural development caused due to some kind of brain abnormalities. As per the guidelines of the 'Learning Disability Association of America', "Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math. They can also interfere with higher level skills as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short term memory and attention. It is important to realize that learning disabilities can affect an individual's life beyond academics such as in personal and professional relationships." Broadly learning disabilities are divided into two categories i.e. SLD (Specific Learning Disabilities) and ID (Intellectual Disabilities). As per the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), SLD can be defined as "A disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest into the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write and spell or to do mathematical calculation."
