Book The Global University Rankings

Download or read book The Global University Rankings written by Akram Jalal-Karim and published by E-Kutub Ltd. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide the reader a thorough grasp on Global University Ranking Systems (GURSs). Many educational authorities throughout the world have recently started regularly assessing the effectiveness of their educational institutions based on their global rankings. Moreover, some institutions use the indicators of these rankings as an objective in their strategic plan, however, many academics do not trust such systems, believing that they deceive their educational institutions, that these rankings are inaccurate and may be biased, and thus do more harm to their universities’ programmes than good. In this book, the author draws attention to the role of higher education institutions and how important it is to make global ranking indicators part of their strategic plans, and thus, it is imperative for all academic and administrative members to work together on planning and implementing them in order to advance the academic performances and strengthen those indicators, which consequently leads to raising their rankings at the league tables of the major Global University Rankings (GURs). The author discusses the ranking indicators from the perspective of academic performance and focuses on the challenges facing higher education institutions at various levels, especially improving the five main academic pillars that the rankings outcomes are based on: teaching and learning, research and publishing, strategic planning, internationalisation, and reputation.

Download or read book University Rankings written by Jung Cheol Shin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking and exhaustive analysis of university ranking surveys scrutinizes their theoretical bases, methodological issues, societal impact, and policy implications, providing readers with a deep understanding of these controversial comparators. The authors propose that university rankings are misused by policymakers and institutional leaders alike. They assert that these interested parties overlook the highly problematic internal logic of ranking methodologies even as they obsess over the surveys’ assessment of their status. The result is that institutions suffer from short-termism, realigning their resources to maximize their relative rankings. While rankings are widely used in policy and academic discussions, this is the first book to explore the theoretical and methodological issues of ranking itself. It is a welcome contribution to an often highly charged debate. Far from showing how to manipulate the system, this collection of work by key researchers aims to enlighten interested parties.

Book University Rankings Diversity and the New Landscape of Higher Education

Download or read book University Rankings Diversity and the New Landscape of Higher Education written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University rankings are a relatively new phenomenon in higher education. Although quite an established practice in the U. S., it is only within the last decade that attempts to analyse university performance have spread to the rest of the world, and that we also have seen new global rankings appear—rankings attempting to measure university performance beyond national borders. No wonder that this trend is accompanied by a growing interest in studying rankings throughout the world. This book is written as part of the effort to better understand rankings and their effects on higher education. A serious approach towards university rankings implies that rankings should be analysed properly, including the methods used and the indicators chosen, and investigate the objectives claimed. If university rankings are considered as consumer information then everyone should have an interest in basing such guidance on valid and reliable data and methodology. A serious analysis should also discuss the wider implications of rankings as an emerging phenomenon in higher education. Consequently, the contributions to this book investigate and analyse how different rankings work, how they reach their conclusions, and on what data and methodology they are built. Furthermore it provides a critical reflection about the impact of rankings on higher education, how and in what way rankings influence policy-making, the structure of the sector, or the internal life of the sector.

Book Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Performance of East Asian Universities RIHE International Seminar Reports

Download or read book Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Performance of East Asian Universities RIHE International Seminar Reports written by Nian Cai Liu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first multi-indicator ranking of world universities, "Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)", was published by the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in June 2003. Although the initial purpose of ARWU was to find the global standing of top Chinese universities, it has been attracting world-wide attention from governments, universities, media, and the public in general. Professor Ellen Hazelkorn of Dublin Institute of Technology recently wrote that "ARWU marked the era of global rankings, despite being developed to highlight the position of Chinese universities vis-a-vis competitor universities and being focused on research, it has effectively become the 'Gold Standard'"(Hazelkorn, 2014). Nearly one year and a half after the first publication of ARWU, the Times Higher Education Supplement and Quacquarelli Symonds published their "World University Rankings" in November 2004. Up to now, more than a dozen global university rankings have been published. The latest development is the Best Global Universities Rankings published by "US News and World Report" in October 2014. Although the major global rankings use very different methodologies, the majority of their top 100 universities are the same, and the percentage is significantly higher for the top 20 universities. Different ranking methodologies may result in very different, sometimes conflicting, ranking results, depending on the dimensions measured by the ranking methodologies. Large variation of ranking positions of a particular institution in different rankings indicates the unbalanced performance of the institution in different dimensions measured. Although controversial, global university rankings are widely used by various stakeholders and have a profound impact on world higher education. Professor Simon Marginson of the University College of London (UCL) Institute of Education recently wrote "Since the first Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2003 global rankings have transformed higher education" and "Since the emergence of global rankings, universities have been unable to avoid national and international comparisons, and this has caused changes in the way universities function" (Marginson, 2014).

Book World University Rankings Statistical Issues And Possible Remedies

Download or read book World University Rankings Statistical Issues And Possible Remedies written by Kay Cheng Soh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World university ranking started one and a half decades ago for the purpose of understanding what makes an excellent institution of higher education. Subsequent to the appearance of the Academic Ranking of World Universities at the Shanghai Jiaotong University, there soon emerged the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. These three ranking systems are considered the classics as they are the fore-runners, although no less than ten new systems have come to the arena. The various ranking systems adopt a common approach of weight-and-sum to process the indicator data. Each system, somewhat arbitrarily, decides on a set of indicators and assigns different weights to these, presumably reflecting their relative importance. This simple (and simplistic) approach meets well common sense. And, in fact, much of the discussion on world university rankings is conducted at the commonsensical level. However, analyses conducted in the recent years uncovered several problems of the prevalent approach: spurious precision, mutual compensation, weight discrepancy, indicator redundancy, etc., which render the overall scores and ranking suspect in terms of validity. These are due to systems ignoring the fact that world university rankings are a form of social measurement and therefore need be seen from this perspective. Moreover, rankings encourage competition and, in the highly competitive world of today, it is natural that institutional attention is focused on the ranking results. By now, the original purpose of world university ranking seems to have been overshadowed, and world university rankings look more like international academic contests, as though they are annual sports meets. This monograph collects together many articles pertaining to the identified measurement and statistical issues of world university rankings and suggests remedies to make ranking results more trustworthy.

Book The Impact of Higher Education Ranking Systems on Universities

Download or read book The Impact of Higher Education Ranking Systems on Universities written by Kevin Downing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by three generations of rankings academics with considerable experience from three very different regions of the globe, lifts the lid on the real impact of higher education ranking systems (HERS) on universities and their stakeholders. It critically analyses the criteria that make up the ‘Big Three’ global ranking systems and, using interviews with senior administrators, academics and managers, discusses their impact on universities from four very different continents. Higher education continues to be dominated by a reputational hierarchy of institutions that sustains and is reinforced by HERS. Despite all the opinions and arguments about the legitimacy of the rankings as a construct, it seems experts agree that they are here to stay. The question, therefore, seems to be less about whether or not universities should be compared and ranked, but the manner in which this is undertaken. Delivering a fresh perspective on global rankings, this book summarizes the development of HERS and provides a critical evaluation of the effects of HERS on four different major regions – South Africa, the Arab region, South East Asia, and Australia. It will appeal to any academic, student, university administrator or governing body interested in or affected by global higher education ranking systems.

Book EBOOK Beyond Mass Higher Education Building on Experience

Download or read book EBOOK Beyond Mass Higher Education Building on Experience written by Ian McNay and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2005-11-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the key elements of mass higher education? How does mass higher education affect students and staff? What are the policy, pedagogic and management issues that need to be addressed? More is now expected of higher education provision. It has to meet demands for expansion, excellence, diversity and equity in access and assessment, teaching and research, as well as entrepreneurial engagement with the world outside. Thirty years ago, Martin Trow wrote of higher education systems moving from elite provision through a mass system to universal levels of access. The UK is now approaching such universal levels; Scotland has already reached them. It is nearly fifteen years since Trow's mass threshold was reached. Despite being on the brink of universal provision, there is still no clear picture of what a mass system should look like. This collection looks forward to the next decade of higher education, and identifies strategic issues that need to be tackled at institutional and management levels. It considers how far the higher education system has adapted to respond to the requirements of a mass and universal system, rather than struggling to sustain an elite system with mass participation. Beyond Mass Higher Education is key reading for those leading and managing universities and colleges, as well as higher education researchers and policy makers.
