Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate how enrollment in 15 credit hours during the first semester influenced a first-time-in-college (FTIC), first-generation (FG) student’s perceptions of their academic momentum, their academic and social integration, and their persistence to graduation, at the conclusion of their first year of attendance. The research problem explored the lived experience of first-generation, freshmen students who attended a Midwest university that recently implemented the academic momentum approached known as 15 to Finish. Research questions sought to exam the influence of pre-entry factors on enrollment decisions, the experiences during the first year that enhanced or diminished academic and social integration and the overall perception of momentum achieved, based on Tinto’s Theory of Student Departure. The qualitative interpretative case study was conducted using a participant screener, dyad and triad interviews, and document review. The participant pool was identified by university personnel and recruited using the university Qualtrics system. A survey was administered allowing students to sign up for the study. Data collection was accomplished via Zoom and Dedoose was used to manage the date, create codes, and derive themes. Study findings indicate the participants, all first-generation, scholarship recipients who enrolled in at least 15 credit hours their first semester, experienced short-lived academic momentum as defined by credit accumulation. Students reported integration in the formal academic system and limited integration in the informal social system as a result of their enrollment. Additionally, students noted that they attributed much of their momentum to attributes and factors outside of their enrolled course load.

Our nation's community colleges are facing a completion crisis. The college-going experience of too many students is interrupted, lengthening their time to completing a degree—or worse, causing many to drop out altogether. In The Costs of Completion, Robin G. Isserles contextualizes this crisis by placing blame on the neoliberal policies that have shaped public community colleges over the past thirty years. The disinvestment of state funding, she explains, has created austerity conditions, leading to an overreliance on contingent labor, excessive investments in advisement technologies, and a push to performance outcomes like retention and graduation rates for measuring student and institutional success. The prevailing theory at the root of the community college completion crisis—academic momentum—suggests that students need to build momentum in their first year by becoming academically integrated, thereby increasing their chances of graduating in a timely fashion. A host of what Isserles terms "innovative disruptions" have been implemented as a way to improve on community college completion, but because disruptions are primarily driven by degree attainment, Isserles argues that they place learning and developing as afterthoughts while ignoring the complex lives that define so many community college students. Drawing on more than twenty years of teaching, advising, and researching largely first-generation community college students as well as an analysis of five years of student enrollment patterns, college experiences, and life narratives, Isserles takes pains to center students and their experiences. She proposes initiatives created in accordance with a care ethic, which strive to not only get students through college—quantifying credit accumulation and the like—but also enable our most precarious students to flourish in a college environment. Ultimately, The Costs of Completion offers a deeper, more complex understanding of who community college students are, why and how they enroll, and what higher education institutions can do to better support them.

Book excerpt: This paper uses the credits-attempted perspective--in the context of how many credits a student attempts in their first year of college--and reports on several related projects all intended to evaluate potential interventions to raise academic momentum among first-year community college students. The presentation contrasts non-experimental findings from analyses of transcript data with three randomized control trials aimed at assessing the impact of increasing student momentum. The research questions addressed are: (1) Is there evidence that increased academic momentum--defined as increased engagement in course-taking in the first year--improves retention and degree completion among community college students in non-experimental settings?; and (2) Will experimental manipulations or interventions that increase students' momentum result in better retention and degree completion? The research considers three potential interventions, programs, or practices: (1) enrolling in summer school immediately prior to starting at a community college; (2) increasing from a part-time course-load to a full-time course-load during the first year of college; and (3) attending summer school at the end of one's first year at community college. Researchers compare and contrast analyses of nation-wide transcripts, case study, and RCT data for community college students at the City University of New York (CUNY). The total number of participants was 1,570 with 719 in the control and 851 the experimental groups, respectively. Propensity score matched analyses of non-experimental data from national and CUNY transcript studies indicate that all three programs or interventions had significant positive effects on retention and/or degree completion among community college freshmen. Ongoing RCT experimental studies, however, have not shown significant results for all of the interventions. Preliminary results suggest that community colleges should offer bridge programs and summer programs, and encourage part-time students to increase to full time in their second semester. Some recruitment brochures often discuss famous alumni, athletics championships, and a vibrant student life. Particularly at research universities, marketing materials may even focus on entrepreneurs and medical discoveries. These types of colleges along with others compromise the marketplace of higher education in which different types of colleges exist across a spectrum of missions, institutional sagas, and histories. Within this marketplace is a bewildering and disorienting catalog of different institutional types and classifications. This marketplace also exists within a conglomerate of rankings and ratings that are ordered by US News & World Report and Petersons. Such rankings are often connected to a larger quest for prestige and primarily facilitated by these private-sector publications, but are juxtaposed to the higher education industry-created Carnegie Classification system. The Carnegie Classification system was created as an approach to differentiate the more than 4,000 institutions by size, mission, and scope for research and policy analysis. However, this system is also integrated into broader hierarchies of accreditation and funding. However, the continued reclassification of the system in 2005, 2010, and the addition of new categories in 2018 such as doctoral/professional has advanced to “call attention to- and emphasize the importance of-the considerable institutional diversity of U.S. higher education (2005, p. 52). However, these typologies do not fully describe or conceptualize the organizational, administrative, culture, or student experiences of each of these typologies. The rankings guides and the Carnegie Classification systems often overlook more nuanced institutional types such as faith-based or “works colleges.” They also overlook the role and impact of Minority Serving Institutions (MSI). This lack of recognition often facilitates continued invisibility for different institutional types and the diverse multiple student populations they may educate and support. Therefore, this edited text seeks to expand and further the Carnegie Classification system typology, and beyond the private sector rankings. This text is a response to a call for existential exploration as an attempt to critically revivify our understanding of the various institutional types and is inspired by the words of David Thorton Moore in which it might be heartening to see a cadre of faculty and critical scholars facilitate, “a form of discourse in which teachers and students conduct an unfettered investigation of social institutions, power relations, and value commitment.” In this text, the authors describe and problematize the various institutional types as defined by accreditation, Carnegie classification, and private sector rankings.
