Book Challenges from the Middle

Download or read book Challenges from the Middle written by Emeka Nzeocha and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior. Personality. Adolescence. Academic performance. These are some of the buzz phrases prevalent in middle school settings as educators wrestle with how to understand, manage, lead, and work with our middle school students and help shape them into responsible young adults. Character education (and many terms like it) is a concept that has been around for many years on every level of the educational process. In the middle school setting, there is an urgent need for character education, regardless of what form it takes. Sadly, some schools and/or the administration abandon this process in the vigorous pursuit of higher test scores. This book condenses my empirical research into character education with a focus on the inner city middle school setting. I examined how school stakeholders viewed this topic, what they know about it, why they support or disapprove of character education, and possible steps schools could take to implement their own initiatives successfully, both in the middle school setting and others as well.

Book The Influence of Character Education on Student Behavior and Student Academic Achievement in Texas Character Plus Middle Schools

Download or read book The Influence of Character Education on Student Behavior and Student Academic Achievement in Texas Character Plus Middle Schools written by Santiago Davidu Udayar and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior research indicates that character education programs may have an influence on student behavior and academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of character education programs on student behavior and student academic achievement in Texas middle schools identified as "Character Plus" schools by the state. Fifty-five Character Plus middle schools (grade 7 through grade 8) and a comparison group of 55 middle schools that had not implemented character education programs since 2001 were selected for inclusion in the study. To be included in the study, the Character Plus middle schools had to have continuously met criteria for implementation of state-approved character education program from 2003 to 2007. The data for the study included 2006-2007 eighth-grade Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) scores for reading and mathematics; student behavior variables, percentage of students with disciplinary placements, students' attendance rates, students' drop-out rates, and percentage of students at risk, and control variables percentage of limited English proficient students, percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and percentage of instructional expenditure per student. After controlling three variables - percentage of limited English proficient students, percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and percentage of instructional expenditure per student - the data were analyzed, using single-classification analysis of covariance, multiple discriminant analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis to test the following null hypotheses (1) character education programs in Texas Character Plus schools would not influence student achievement, (2) character education in Texas Character Plus schools would not influence student behavior, (3) and student behavior in Texas Character Plus schools would have no influence on academic achievement. The test results indicated that character education had no direct influence on academic achievement. But, character education was found to have a significant statistical influence on student behavior and there was a significant influence of student behavior on academic achievement. Based on the study findings, it was concluded that character education in Texas Character Plus middle schools did not influence achievement directly, but by improving student behavior, character education did influence academic achievement.

Book The Effects of Character Education on Student Behavior

Download or read book The Effects of Character Education on Student Behavior written by William G. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Character education has been a part of public schooling in the United States since its beginning. It has undergone dramatic changes over the years, from didactic instruction to service learning; it continues to evolve as more and more schools become involved in teaching students right from wrong. The current emphasis on character education in schools began in the early 1990s as an attempt to alleviate the increasingly violent behavior of students as reported in the media. The purpose of this study was to determine how character education affected the behavior of students. The study involved: observing student behavior; interviewing teachers, students, and parents to determine their perceptions of the effects of the character education program on student behavior; and reviewing disciplinary records to identify behavioral patterns. The findings from this study suggested that character education programs may have a positive effect on student behavior. Furthermore, the findings led to recommendations regarding the implementation of character education programs in elementary schools. Character education should be an integral part of the curriculum, not taught as a separate subject. This includes not only academic subjects but also specialty areas such as art, music, and physical education. Classroom rules should be based on the principles of good character and teachers should model good character for the students to observe. Additionally, students should be taught character through hands-on service activities that contribute to the school, the community, and society in general. This will help the students develop a sense of ownership of the program and should help to improve student behavior.

Book The Construction of Children s Character

Download or read book The Construction of Children s Character written by Alex Molnar and published by National Society for the Study of Education. This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an analysis of approaches to moral education in the 1960s and 1970s and then moves to a description and analysis of more contemporary efforts that characterize the current 'movement' for character education. It becomes clear, however, that 'the current movement' is a misnomer, for there are marked differences today among those who are concerned with the moral and character development of children. And there are others who are critical of the idea that schools should be involved in character education at all.

This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of character is a valued objective for many kinds of educational programs that take place both in and outside of school. Educators and administrators who develop and run programs that seek to develop character recognize that the established approaches for doing so have much in common, and they are eager to learn about promising practices used in other settings, evidence of effectiveness, and ways to measure the effectiveness of their own approaches. In July 2016, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop to review research and practice relevant to the development of character, with a particular focus on ideas that can support the adults who develop and run out-of-school programs. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dynamic look at the current state of character education, Alan Lockwood assesses its strengths and weaknesses and finds fault with leading advocates for failing to respond to sound critiques of their work. Lockwood argues that contemporary character education can be significantly improved by using key principles from established theories and research on developmental psychology. He offers numerous examples to support his recommendations while inviting character education theorists and practitioners to generate their own implications from his presentation. For anyone interested in improving the quality of values-based education for children and adolescents, this book: Elaborates an alternative view of values education that is critical to pursuing a mission to promote good citizenship. Explains what contemporary character education is, identifying its strengths and addressing its major criticisms. Offers recommendations for curriculum and instruction that systematically take into account developmental perspectives. Alan L. Lockwood is professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. “Brimming with fresh insights on almost every page, Alan Lockwood challenges contemporary character education’s fundamental assumptions and proposes a coherent perspective to guide more defensible and effective programs. This is a significant addition to theory and practice in the field of character education.”—James S. Leming, Carl A. Gerstacker Chair in Education, Saginaw Valley State University

Book Stakeholder Perceptions of an Exemplary Middle School Character Education Program and Its Implications for School Improvement

Download or read book Stakeholder Perceptions of an Exemplary Middle School Character Education Program and Its Implications for School Improvement written by Johncarlos M. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Character education (CE) in schools has been reported to support a safe school environment in which adults and students can embrace core ethical values such as respect, fairness, and responsibility, for example (Pala, 2011). It has the power to not only "cultivate minds [but] nurture hearts" as well (Pala, 2011, p. 26). The creation of a safe teaching and learning environment in which students and staff engage in critical discourse of ethical issues related character development can produce an atmosphere of human beings who feel better about themselves and their work. As a result, one cannot overlook the implications for school improvement that character education presents for those courageous enough to purposefully and intently engage its implementation in schools. Given the troubling trends in today's youth substantiated by research (Dahlberg, Toal, Swahn, & Behrens, 2005; Garofalo, Wolf, Kessel, Palfrey, & Durant, 1998; Lickona, 1996; Pena, Matthieu, Zayas, Masyn, & Caine, 2012), the purpose of this study was to investigate stakeholder perceptions of the influence of an exemplary character education program's implementation in a middle school and its contribution to school improvement. This study was a qualitative interview study in which 19 participants from teachers, support staff, administrators, and a parent were asked their insight regarding the implementation of an exemplary character education program that was grounded in the Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education. The interview study coupled with document analysis was the approach necessary to address the central research question: How did the three-year implementation of an exemplary middle school character education program contribute to school improvement at a middle school that was recognized for its exemplary character education program? Over a three-year period of character education program implementation, BOA Middle, experienced reductions in its out-of-school suspensions by over 65%, increased staff attendance, reduced teacher turnover from 33% to 11%, was named a PCS district Highly Enhanced School, met 29 of 29 academic targets, was named a Positive Behavior Intervention Support Model School for the state due to its exemplary character education program, experienced high growth as determined by student achievement and state accountability data, and met federal accountability growth standards. Through this study, the following themes emerged regarding participants' perceptions about the implementation of the exemplary character education program: " Character is Multidimensional " CE is 24/7/365 " Implementation requires consistency " CE fosters school improvement as Adults Lead and Students Achieve " School communities can support CE through Collaboration, Service Learning, and Reflection."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
