Book Relationships Among Admission Variables Professional Education Outcome Measures and Job Performance of University of Missouri Physical Therapy Graduates

Download or read book Relationships Among Admission Variables Professional Education Outcome Measures and Job Performance of University of Missouri Physical Therapy Graduates written by Charlene Marie Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify physical therapy program admissions criteria that could explain the variance associated with measures of future performance in the professional program, both academic and clinical, on the licensure examination, and on the job after graduation. The ability of professional education outcome measures to explain the differences in licensure examination score and job performance were also investigated. Procedures. The sample included 48 University of Missouri physical therapy graduates. Eight admission variables, four professional education outcome measures, and one job performance rating were examined. Correlation and multiple and linear regression analyses were performed. Hypotheses were tested at the.05 level. Conclusions. Based on findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: (a) Composite ACT score and prerequisite GPAs are positively related to academic achievement in PT, licensure examination score, and job performance; (b) the amount of PT experience prior to application is negatively related to overall academic achievement in the PT program; (c) interview scores are negatively related to clinical performance prior to graduation for PT students; (d) admission variables are useful in explaining the differences in academic performance and licensure examination performance but not clinical performance of PT students and graduates; (e) composite ACT scores and prerequisite science grades are the admission variables that best explain the differences in professional academic achievement of PT students; (f) educational outcome measures are of limited value in explaining differences in licensure examination scores and job performance of PT graduates; and, (g) composite ACT is the single best admission variable to explain differences in the academic performance of PT students and job performance of graduates.

Book Noncognitive Factors in Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Admissions an Exploration of Holistic Review Procedures

Download or read book Noncognitive Factors in Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Admissions an Exploration of Holistic Review Procedures written by Sarah L. Salvatore and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has demonstrated a lack of diversity in the physical therapy (PT) educational system. Guidelines from the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) recommend evaluating noncognitive factors other than standardized tests and grade point average during the admissions process to address this lack of diversity. This holistic review of noncognitive factors has been proposed to better evaluate the abilities of students from underrepresented groups. However, the implementation and effects of noncognitive assessment have not been well studied in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs. The purpose of this grounded theory qualitative study is to understand how DPT program admissions officers use noncognitive factors in admissions decisions. Noncognitive factors include those outlined as Kyllonen's (2005) noncognitive constructs in education: personality factors, affective competencies, performance factors, attitudinal constructs, and learning skills. Nine DPT program admissions officers were recruited from institutions that require interviews and do not require standardized test scores. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using a researcher-developed protocol. Interview data were transcribed and analyzed for broad themes, then used to answer the research questions and generate a theory. Findings from this study indicate DPT programs prioritize students with diverse individual backgrounds and experiences. DPT programs also prioritize qualities in all five constructs in Kyllonen (2005), especially the qualities of resilience, empathy, and leadership. Ultimately, DPT programs require students to meet an academic threshold before any noncognitive factors are evaluated. DPT programs use interviews, essay questions, and input from current students when making admissions decisions. Most programs in this study use interviews to select students that best fit their program values because academic metrics alone do not predict student success. DPT programs also use interviews to assess students that fall in the middle of the applicant pool, where academic metrics may be similar. Finally, programs assessing noncognitive factors admit a more diverse cohort of students but report an increased need for student support. Conclusions that arise from this research highlight a lack of standardization among programs. First, DPT programs prioritize different academic metrics, noncognitive factors, and individual student identities between programs. Second, DPT programs admit students who embody the noncognitive factors they consider important for success, but these factors vary between programs and success is not well defined. Third, no standardized noncognitive assessment tool has been identified for its predictive value. Fourth, increased support for students and faculty is needed to implement noncognitive assessment and meet the needs of a more diverse admitted cohort.

Book The Perceptions of Appalachian Region Doctor of Physical Therapy Admissions Faculty on the Holistic Nature of Their Program s Admissions Processes and Requirements

Download or read book The Perceptions of Appalachian Region Doctor of Physical Therapy Admissions Faculty on the Holistic Nature of Their Program s Admissions Processes and Requirements written by Kwaku A Kankam and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have extensively investigated the quantitative relationship between various admissions requirements and their predictive capability for academic success in DPT programs; however, limited investigators have examined the perceptions of these requirements by admissions faculty. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of Doctor of Physical Therapy faculty in the Appalachian region regarding their programs’ admissions processes and requirements. I investigated the Appalachian region due to its economic differences from other parts of the United States. Considering this region was more rural and impoverished, these factors could have affected students’ access to higher education. How admissions criteria were weighted varied between DPT programs and potentially lacked evidence-based research to support their implied emphasis on the admissions process. Through a poststructuralist lens, I investigated the relationship between one’s truth, admissions faculty, and its potentially powerful effect on others, such as applicants. The 10 participants revealed all programs continue to weigh the value of academic measures, such as GPA and GRE, as the highest when reviewing applicants. Additionally, there needed to be more clarity around utilizing interviews and the holistic nature of the admissions process at most programs. I found most programs in this region feared changing their admissions requirements to make them more holistic without the data to support this decision. Using the poststructuralist lens, programs would rather believe the current dominant discourse than pursue alternative discourse.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to examine personal attributes, including differences among more and less diverse students and thir relationship of academic performance. Currently, it is not known if more diverse students differ from less diverse students in personal attributes that may be considered in holistic admissions. It is also not known which personal attributes may be predictive of academic performance in DPT students and if the same prediction approach holds true for students with more or fewer diversity characteristics. This study examined the number of diversity characteristics for each subject, their self-report ratings on six personal attributes, and their academic performance at two time points in the curriculum and on a standardized test. We explored the relationship between 2 catagories of non-academic factors: 1) number of diversity characteristics, and 2) personal attributes. Additionally, we examine if these non-academic factors predicted academic performance. The overarching goal of this project was to further understand the relationship of diversity, personal attributes, and academic performance with the goal of providing data-driven evidence to inform equitable admissions practices.

Book The Physical Therapy School Interview

Download or read book The Physical Therapy School Interview written by Nicholas Gallo and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Therapy School Interview can be a stressful time in any applicant's life. What's important to remember however is that the interview is essential for some Physical Therapy Schools so that they can get a better understanding of who you are. If you do not know how to prepare for this, you are not alone. Most often, prospective Physical Therapy students are not as prepared as they need to be for the actual interview for their target school. I have had the opportunity to go through the interview process twice, once when I was not accepted and once when I was accepted. I remembered walking out of my first interview feeling like I absolutely bombed it. Therefore, I did as much research as possible and developed my own plan for being accepted which was helpful in the second time I did an interview. There were essential things that I did to prepare for the interview process and I include all of that in this publication. Throughout my time in school I also had the chance to help with the interview process where I learned a great deal of information. Therefore I am also going to share in this publication additional tips and strategies that I learned while on the other side of the aisle. My personal experiences as an applicant and as an interview volunteer have helped me provide the essential advice I give to prospective students every year.My goal with this guide is to help a person who has been selected for their target school's Physical Therapy School Interview achieve their ultimate goal of being accepted. It is important to remember that with the essential tools and knowledge you can strengthen your chances of being accepted and ultimately beat out your competition.-Nicholas Gallo
