  • Author : Jeremy Black
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book A Short History of War written by Jeremy Black and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderfully engaging, accessible introduction to war, from ancient times to the present and into the future Throughout history, warfare has transformed social, political, cultural, and religious aspects of our lives. We tell tales of wars—past, present, and future—to create and reinforce a common purpose. In this engaging overview, Jeremy Black examines war as a global phenomenon, looking at the First and Second World Wars as well as those ranging from Han China and Assyria, Imperial Rome, and Napoleonic France to Vietnam and Afghanistan. Black explores too the significance of warfare more broadly and the ways in which cultural understandings of conflict have lasting consequences in societies across the world. Weaponry, Black argues, has had a fundamental impact on modes of war: it created war in the air and transformed it at sea. Today, as twentieth-century weapons are challenged by drones and robotics, Black examines what the future of warfare looks like.

Book The Lost City of Solomon and Sheba

Download or read book The Lost City of Solomon and Sheba written by Robin Brown-Lowe and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of south-central Africa there are remains of monuments, ruined cities, temples, forts, irrigation terraces reminiscent of the classic civilizations of the Egyptians and Phoenicians. Yet despite having first been investigated by the Royal Geographical Society a century ago the Zimbabwe (stone courts) culture remains all but unknown to the world at large. This book reveals how the truth about the Zimbabwe culture has been radically influenced, indeed suppressed, throughout history by white and black political interests, struggling to redefine Zimbabwe's identity.

Book Ploughing New Ground

Download or read book Ploughing New Ground written by Getnet Bekele and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2016, the Ethiopian administration declared a State of Emergency in response to anti-Government demonstrations and mass riots. Officially said to result from subversive activities channelled from Eritrea, Egypt and diasporic populations in the West, the evidence in fact suggests that the riots stemmed from widespread internal dissatisfaction. Large-scale land dispossessions following bilateral deals with transnational agribusiness, damming of major rivers, construction of sugar estates and industry parks as well as urban sprawl have put pressure on agricultural and rural areas. Today, displacement, drought and widening inequalities surround fears of severe food shortages and political instability. Drawing on informant testimonies, court archives, field reports and other sources, the author examines these developments in Ethiopia's lake region. He shows how transformations over time in spatial politics, state-society relations and the organization of production and exchange have influenced the situation today, and reveals the impact of these changes on a population of smallholder farmers for which agriculture is not only the mainstay of the national economy but a way of life. Getnet Bekele is Associate Professor of History at Oakland University, MI, where he teaches African History and the Environmental and Economic History of Africa and the Global South.

Book The Archaeology of the Jesuit Missions in Ethiopia 1557 1632

Download or read book The Archaeology of the Jesuit Missions in Ethiopia 1557 1632 written by Victor M. Fernández and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest and most ambitious projects carried out by the Society of Jesus was the mission to the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia, which ran from 1557 to 1632. In about 1621, crucial figures in the Ethiopian Solomonid monarchy, including King Susenyos, were converted to Catholicism and up to 1632 imposing missionary churches, residences, and royal structures were built. This book studies for the first time in a comprehensive manner the missionary architecture built by the joint work of Jesuit padres, Ethiopian and Indian masons, and royal Ethiopian patrons. The work gives ample archaeological, architectonic, and historical descriptions of the ten extant sites known to date and includes hypotheses on hitherto unexplored or lesser known structures.

Book The Rhodesian Air Force in Zimbabwe s War of Liberation 1966 1980

Download or read book The Rhodesian Air Force in Zimbabwe s War of Liberation 1966 1980 written by Darlington Mutanda and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the development of the Rhodesian Air Force during the Second Chimurenga or Bush War (1966-1980). Airpower in irregular conflict is effective at the tactical level because guerrilla warfare is not a purely military conflict. The Rhodesian Air Force was deployed in a war-winning versus a supporting role as a result of the shortage of manpower to deal with insurgency, and almost all units of the Rhodesian Security Forces depended on its tactical effectiveness. Technical challenges faced by the Air Force, combined with the rate of guerrilla infiltration and the misuse of airpower to bomb guerrilla bases in neighboring countries largely negated the success of airpower.
