Book The Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos

Download or read book The Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos written by Ogden Goelet and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the enormous monuments throughout Egypt and Nubia that Ramesses II (the Great; ca. 1279-1212 BCE) left behind, his temple at Abydos, built early in his reign, stands as one of his most elegant, with its simple architectural layout and dramatic and graceful painted relief scenes. Though best known for its dramatic reliefs depicting the battle of Kadesh, the temple also offers a wealth of information about religious and social life in ancient Egypt. It reflects, for example, the strenuous efforts of the early Ramessides to reestablish the Osiris cult in Egypt-and particularly at Abydos-in the aftermath of the Amarna period. Building on the comprehensive photographic and epigraphic documentation of the temple presented in The Temple of Ramesses II at Abydos volumes 1 (Wall Scenes) and 2 (Pillars, Niches, and Miscellanea), volume 3 (Architectural and Inscriptional Features) offers a detailed analysis of the overall architectural layout and decorative program of the temple and its symbolism. This discussion approaches the religious history of the site through its archaeology, its inscriptions-both planned and secondary (graffiti)-and its situation in the complex religious landscape of Abydos. Of particular interest are the temple's role as a staging point for the great Osiris Festival and its procession, among the most important of all ritual events in the Egyptian religious calendar during the Ramesside period; the promotion of an active, unbound form of Osiris; and the evidence for important cult activities that took place on the rooftop of the temple, the presence of which is documented today by the staircase that accessed it from Court B.

Over a seven-year period, the authors of 'The temple of Ramesses II in Abydos' conducted a field project with the aim of producing an up-to-date and comprehensive architectural, photographic, and epigraphic record of the temple. This lavish volume, the first of two documenting their results, presents more than two hundred detailed line drawings-accurately rendered according to modern epigraphical standards-of the temple's carved relief scenes, placed alongside their corresponding full-color photographs. The result is a masterpiece of modern epigraphic research and publication. 'Volume 2, Pillars, miscellany, and inscriptions', will contain additional elements of the temple, as well as translations of the inscriptions found in the temple. 0vol. 2 of 2 vol. set. 2 vol. set. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive guide to middle zone of Abydos, which visitors can still walk through the magnificently decorated monuments of Seti I and his son Ramesses II. The first structure you'll see at Abydos is the Great Temple of Seti I, which is one of the most complete, unique and beautiful temples in Egypt. With exquisite decoration and plenty of atmospheres, it is the main attraction here, although the nearby Cenotaph or Osireion is also wrapped in mystery and the desert views are spectacular. And about one-third of a kilometer to the north of Seti I's temple, Ramesses II left behind, his temple at Abydos, built early in his reign, stands as one of his most elegant monuments, with its simple architectural layout and dramatic and graceful painted relief scenes. Though best known for its dramatic reliefs depicting the battle of Kadesh, the temple also offers a wealth of information about religious and social life in ancient Egypt.

Book Mysteries Of Abydos Temple

Download or read book Mysteries Of Abydos Temple written by Benedict Retka and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egyptian temples were built for the official worship of the gods and in commemoration of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt and regions under Egyptian control. Temples were seen as houses for the gods or kings to whom they were dedicated. This book is about the author's memory of a lost time. "I saw my mother walk before me, up the elegant ancient stair case, she stooped in awe at the temple opening. The carvings were so vivid, so detailed and embraced by bursting colors as well as the suns heating light, which made the colors change every minute. Birds greeted us welcome with their beautiful singing, it was as if the structure had enchanted them. There was so much life in the Temple of a million years at Abydos, and yet it is a Death temple. As we entered the well over 2000 year old temple, I was struck by all the pylons. The Next room was the same, pylons everywhere. Then I suddenly realized something very intriguing... I went back to the first room and looked around, at the walls, at the images.. Then I went back to the second room where my mother was standing, still in awe of it all. I looked around there, at the walls at the images, then I quickly walked into the next room... It was like if a light bolt just turned on over my head.... I could not wait to get back to my books, to see if what I saw, was actually there.. if my thoughts made any real sense... It was one of those moments, where you just go, nah... it can't be what I am are thinking.."

Book Abydos

Download or read book Abydos written by Ilona Regulski and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is the first of two complementary volumes that explore Abydos through the lenses of the latest archaeological, archival and collections research, building upon a colloquium and workshop held at the British Museum in 2015. Volume 2 presents a focussed view on Abydos in the post-pharaonic period. Chosen as the burial ground for the first kings of Egypt, Abydos became a site of great antiquity, and its ancient sanctity may have conferred legitimacy on the individuals buried there. The site soon became the cult centre for Egypt's most popular god, Osiris, who ruled the netherworld and guaranteed every Egyptian eternal life after death. As a result of continued ritual performance, endowments and pilgrimage, a vast landscape of chapels and tombs, temples and towns, developed. For millennia, Abydos was one of the most consecrated sites of Egypt. The contributions in this volume will address the social and cultural dynamics of an ever-changing landscape serving this unique ritual narrative.
