Book excerpt: "If you think abuses such as the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson are caused by a "few bad apples" in the police force, think again. As this exposU shows, the magnitude of the problem goes far beyond the well-known incidents. In this eye-opening book, nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Josh Tolley documents hundreds of police abuse cases that have occurred with no respect to race, age, gender, location, or income status. Tolley has been covering this topic on a daily basis for the past four years. From hair-raising no-knock raids at the wrong address that resulted in the deaths of innocent people to the rape of women seeking police help and the confiscation of property of even those found not guilty, the cases reported here expose the gravity and pervasiveness of this problem. Going beyond just reporting, the book also contains illuminating interviews with victims, police officers, and lawyers. Tolley concludes by considering potential solutions ranging from the use of body cams and the elimination of money-generating quotas for officers to citizen review boards and a greater emphasis on elected sheriffs to oversee police conduct. Without indulging in "cop-bashing"

This book was released on 2008 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disabled people may be missing out on special parking concessions because of where they live. This is the main finding of this report into the Blue Badge Scheme, which offers parking concessions for disabled people. It comes as the Government carries out a strategic review of the scheme. The Committee found wide differences in the way the eligibility criteria are assessed by different local authorities. It wants to see more done to promote consistent good practice across the country. The Committee's conclusions include: (1) the Committee wants to see the minimum issue period for a badge reduced from three years to one, to include those with short-term or temporary disabilities. It would also like to see "smart card" technology developed so there could be even more flexibility over the issuing of badges. (2) In cases where a blue badge holder's condition is unlikely to improve they should not usually have to undergo regular three-yearly assessments, but have their badge renewed automatically. (3) the Government should consider including central London, which currently has its own regime, in the national system. (4) eligibility for a blue badge should be based on mobility in a wider sense than simply on an applicant's ability to walk. But the Government should also look to more appropriate ways of helping people with other disabilities, such as bowel disease. (5) for those who knowingly abuse the scheme the Committee want to see tougher penalties. In particular, those who use stolen badges should have their vehicles impounded. A national database should also be established to help combat fraud. (6) the Security Industry Authority should take steps to prevent vehicles displaying a valid badge from being clamped when they are parked on private land. (7) the Committee also found that Asda was the only example given of a major national company which consistently fined people who abused its disabled bays.

Book excerpt: From the same deadly crucible that forged Al Qaeda and ISIS, a new terrorist plot threatens to strike at the heart of America, and it’ll take an uneasy alliance between New York’s sharpest investigative journalist and one of its toughest private eyes to take them down. Badge of Evil is the first novel in a bold new thriller series from the writing team of private investigator Bill Stanton and award-winning journalist Craig Horowitz. All eyes are on New York City’s police commissioner Lawrence Brock after his hands-on role in a raid on a potential terrorist cell that turned into a blazing shootout. There’s even talk that he may be headed to Washington to take over Homeland Security. Investigative journalist A. J. Ross wants to expose the ruthless opportunist behind Brock’s heroic image. Freewheeling private investigator Frank Bishop is hired by the family of the lone surviving suspect, desperate to prove the young man’s innocence. A. J. and Bishop hate each other at first sight, but they’ll need to learn to work together quickly if they want to take down the commissioner—because Lawrence Brock will do anything to ensure the dark secrets of his past remain hidden. Badge of Evil introduces a dynamic new voice in thriller fiction, in the spirit of such bestselling authors as Harlan Coben and David Baldacci. It is a novel of our times and for our times—an all too familiar story of corruption and abuse at the highest levels, and how the lust for power can drive men to commit the most shocking acts.

Book Danger Duty and Disillusion

Download or read book Danger Duty and Disillusion written by Joan C. Barker and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 1998-11-07 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider view of an urban subculture! While much of the literature on police analyzes critically what they do, few works address issues of how police officers feel about their chosen profession, their worldview, or their visions. This refreshingly original and unique ethnographic contribution by anthropologist Joan Barker exposes the human elementone rarely seen by non-policeof officers working for the often-controversial L.A.P.D. During her twenty years of fieldwork, Barker gathered valuable information through formal, in-depth interviews and firsthand experiences, distilling her findings into an illuminating, coherent account. She discovers that five phases of occupational socialization normatively mold officers experiences and perceptions. Fleshing out her discussion is the compelling narrative of Fred, a traditional officer whose authentic voice reveals feelings and attitudes that manifest the essence of the human who does the job of policing. An insider view of an urban subculture usually known only from its public presentation.

Book Slave Badges and the Slave Hire System in Charleston South Carolina 1783 1865

Download or read book Slave Badges and the Slave Hire System in Charleston South Carolina 1783 1865 written by Harlan Greene and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slave-hire system of Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1700s and the 1800s produced a curious object--the slave badge. The badges were intended to legislate the practice of hiring a slave from one master to another, and slaves were required by law to wear them. Slave badges have become quite collectible and have excited both scholarly and popular interest in recent years. This work documents how the slave-hire system in Charleston came about, how it worked, who was in charge of it, and who enforced the laws regarding slave badges. Numerous badge makers are identified, and photographs of badges, with commentary on what the data stamped on them mean, are included. The authors located income and expense statements for Charleston from 1783 to 1865, and deduced how many slaves were hired out in the city every year from 1800 on. The work also discusses forgeries of slave badges, now quite common. There is a section of 20 color plates.

Over the course of a lifetime, 30% of women and 16% of men will be subjected to abuse by a partner, yet so many of us are unsure exactly what constitutes domestic abuse, and wouldn't know how to react if we, or one of our friends or family, found ourselves in a relationship with an abuser.
