Book Abundances of Elements in Stars and Nebulae the Abundance of Certain Elements in the Solar Atmosphere

Download or read book Abundances of Elements in Stars and Nebulae the Abundance of Certain Elements in the Solar Atmosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical composition of the Manganese star 53 Tauri was studied with the aid of data secured with the coude spectrograph of the 120-inch reflector at the Lick Observatory. Transition probabilities required for the problem are obtained from laboratory sources whenever possible, but some are obtained by the calibration of stellar data. The temperature of the star, deduced from ionization equilibrium, is near 11,000K-a value in good agreement with that found from spectral energy scans by Jugaku and Sargent. The electron pressure in the atmosphere, deduced from the total intensities of hydrogen lines, appears to lie in the neighborhood of 500 dynes sq cm. Several striking abundance anomalies are found; they cannot be explained by deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium. Manganese seems to be the most abundant metal in the star, but gallium appears to show the greatest enhancement of abudance over the 'normal' value. Strontium, yttrium, and zirconium are also enhanced in abudnace, whilst magnesium, and calcium seems to be depleted. (Author).

Book Abundances of Elements in Stars and Nebulae determination of Ratio of Gas Pressure Toelectron Pressure in Stellar Atmospheres

Download or read book Abundances of Elements in Stars and Nebulae determination of Ratio of Gas Pressure Toelectron Pressure in Stellar Atmospheres written by C. COWLEY and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ratio of gas pressure (P sub g) to electron pressure (P sub e) has been computed over a range of temperatures by an approximate method and also by a more exact IBM 709 program. The approximate method shows large errors at low temperatures and high gas pressures. Tables give the values of log P sub g and log P sub e computed by the 709 as well as the relative abundances to which these values refer. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a detailed description of the planetary nebulae including the relevant astronomical observations and their interpretation. Considerable attention is given to the evolution of these objects as well as to their physical characteristics. I t is hoped that the book be useful to both advanced research workers and to students with some background in astronomy. In this regard, the book should serve as a text as well as a reference work. The many tables included are expected to be useful for both purposes. The references are generally not included in the text except for historical purposes in an effort to improve readability. References are given at the end of each chapter together with sufficient text to describe their content. No attempt has been made to make the list of references complete; on the contrary it has generally been limited to the most recent literature on the subject which in turn refers to earlier research. Again, exceptions have been made for references of historical interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there have been many books on cosmology and galactic and stellar evolution in which abundance analysis of astrophysical objects has played some part, this book is the first one for several years where specialists in the various relevant fields discuss the basis and implications of the subject as a whole. The major aim of the book is to bring together the results from high redshift studies and galactic studies in a coherent way and to cover relevant aspects of nuclear and atomic physics.

Book Planetary Nebulae IAU S323

Download or read book Planetary Nebulae IAU S323 written by Xiaowei Liu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planetary nebulae, glowing shells of ionized gas, are the spectacular products of the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. For astrophysicists, they are important laboratories for the understanding of atomic, molecular, dust, and plasma processes in different cosmic environments; they enable the exploration of the fundamental physics of single and binary star evolution including nucleosynthesis, rotation, mass transfer and loss, and magnetic fields; and they help trace stellar populations, the kinematics, and chemistry of galaxies including our own galaxy, the Milky Way. This volume reviews the current status of this vibrant research field in the form of invited reviews, contributed talks, and posters presented at the IAU Symposium 323. It should be of interest to researchers and advanced students interested in this field and in related fields, including stellar physics, the interstellar medium, and Galactic and extragalactic astronomy.
