Book excerpt: Recent declines in North American breeding populations have sparked great concern over the effects of habitat fragmentation. Neotropical migrant birds use and are influenced by two biomes during a single life span. Yet assessment of the relative importance of changes in tropical wintering areas versus temperate breeding areas is complicated by regional variation in rates and extent of habitat change. Landscape-level measurements of forest fragmentation derived from remotely-sensed data provide a means to compare the patterns of habitat modification on the wintering and breeding grounds of migrant birds. This study quantifies patterns of forest fragmentation in the Southern Appalachian Mountains and tropical Amazon and relates these patterns to the resource needs of neotropical migrant birds. Study sites were selected from remotely-sensed images to represent a range of forest fragmentation (highly fragmented landscape to continuous forest).

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In this study, point counts were used to document and compare habitat use of Neotropical migratory birds in the Piedmont of North Carolina during fall and spring migrations and, for some species, during their breeding cycle. Although species richness and avian abundance were higher in bottomland hardwood habitats during both migration events, they differed significantly among habitats only in spring. V;hile there was no significant difference among habitats in the breeding season, avian abundance and species richness were higher in mature pine-hardwood. A Stepwise Regression analysis revealed that there was no one indicator variable common to both migration and the breeding season, except for number of pines which negatively affected migratory species richness and avian abundance. Since both bottomland and non-bottomland forested riparian habitats were used by migrants as stopover sites, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was employed to measure current and predicted future (1996 - 2045) spatial distributions of these habitats along the Catawba River Basin in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Both habitats were already largely fragmented with greater than 95% of bottomland patches within 100 m of hydrological features measuring less than 5 hectare (ha). Patch size was not predicted to significantly change for bottomland habitats, but it was predicted to decrease for non-bottomland riparian forests.

Book excerpt: Many studies have demonstrated adverse effects of forest fragmentation on breeding forest songbirds in North America, and the viability of regional populations is thought to depend on large, unfragmented forests. However, we know relatively little about the landscape scale consequences of management in the forested landscapes that are presumed to be important to maintaining songbird metapopulations. The southern Appalachians, a mostly forested region, contains the largest network of public lands in the eastern U.S. Most of these public lands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. To begin to understand the landscape scale effects of forest management in the southern Appalachians, I examined the relationship between the relative abundance of different species of breeding songbirds and local and landscape scale habitat variables in two predominately mid- to late-successional National Forests in the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA: the French Broad Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest (North Carolina) and the Nolichucky Ranger District of Cherokee National Forest (Tennessee). As part of the study, I explored two statistical problems frequently encountered in species-environment analysis: count data and spatial autocorrelation. Results from classical normal-errors regression models were similar to results from Poisson and negative binomial models that explicitly model counts. Normal-errors regression models were then modified to account for spatial autocorrelation using a conditional gaussian autoregressive model. Most species, especially Neotropical migrants, were significantly correlated with at least one landscape variable. These correlations included both landscape composition (i.e., the proportion of different landcover types) and landscape pattern (i.e., the spatial arrangement of landcover types) variables at 500 m to 2 km landscape scales. Book excerpt: Addressing population declines in Neotropical migratory birds requires information on breeding demography and connectivity throughout the annual cycle. For species breeding in North American riparian habitats, anthropogenic changes to breeding habitat and indirect carry-over effects from the previous winter can both influence demographic rates. I examined whether a human-altered floodplain was an ecological trap by assessing habitat preferences and their reproductive consequences for yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia). I found that male settlement patterns were positively related to habitat cues that predicted breeding productivity, suggesting that extant riparian habitat was not attracting birds to poor quality sites. I then used stable hydrogen isotopes (D) to show that warblers moulted some feather blocks on breeding grounds and others during their tropical overwintering period. Assignment tests using D values in winter-grown feathers showed that most individuals originated from regions throughout Central America. However, interannual variation in isotope signatures limited further assignment accuracy.
