Book Pacific Salmon Life Histories

Download or read book Pacific Salmon Life Histories written by Cornelis Groot and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.

Book Abundance Age Sex and Size Statistics for Pacific Salmon in Bristol Bay 2006 2008

Download or read book Abundance Age Sex and Size Statistics for Pacific Salmon in Bristol Bay 2006 2008 written by Charles E. Brazil and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abundance, age, sex, and size data were summarized for commercial catches and spawning escapements of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. in Bristol Bay during 2006?2008, as part of an ongoing project to collect baseline biological information. These data are important to the inseason management of the commercial salmon fisheries of Bristol Bay and have been used to determine spawner-recruit relationships, establish spawning escapement goals, and forecast the abundance of future returns. Age, sex, and size of sockeye salmon O. nerka in the commercial catch and escapement were estimated with stratified sampling programs. In 2006, total inshore run of sockeye salmon to Bristol Bay was 42.8 million fish. The total number of sockeye salmon commercially harvested in Bristol Bay was 28.4 million fish and total escapements to all rivers were 14.4 million fish. A total of 14 age classes were present in the 2006 sockeye salmon run: age-1.3 (37.6%), age-1.2 (35.7%), age-2.3 (15.0%), and age-2.2 (9.6%) totaled 97.9% of the run. In 2007, total inshore run of sockeye salmon to Bristol Bay was 44.7 million fish. The total number of sockeye salmon commercially harvested in Bristol Bay was 29.7 million fish and total escapements to all rivers were 14.9 million fish. A total of 15 age classes were present in the 2007 sockeye salmon run: age-1.2 (50.2%), age-1.3 (34.0%), age-2.3 (8.6%), and age-2.2 (5.8%) totaled 98.6% of the run. In 2008, total inshore run of sockeye salmon to Bristol Bay was 40.4 million fish. The total number of sockeye salmon commercially harvested in Bristol Bay was 27.6 million fish and total escapements to all rivers were 12.7 million fish. A total of 14 age classes were present in the 2008 sockeye salmon run: age-1.3 (55.6%), age-1.2 (35.3%), age-2.2 (6.1%), and age-2.3 (2.1%) totaled 99.2% of the run.
