In like manner, the story of the territory unfolds with the release of every body of literature on its history and development over the years. The Story of Abuja; Nigeria's New Capital, written by Dr. L.I. Ofoegbu, is a rich addition to previous and current efforts to create better understanding of the raison d'etre of a politically and culturally neutral and unifying capital that belongs to all Nigerians. The book is a product of painstaking research undertaken by an insider who is familiar with the history of the FCT as well as the interplay of policies, politics and activities that culminated in Abuja Capital City and its satellite communities as we know them today." - General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, GCFR, Former Head of State of Nigeria.

Book Housing Phenomena in Abuja Nigeria

Download or read book Housing Phenomena in Abuja Nigeria written by Joseph Aluya and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zippy the TV Chimp tells the little-known story about a very well-known personality. Zippy got his name from the way he "zipped" about while wearing his skates. He was given his "little boy" style and status because of his intelligence, understanding and ability to do so many things the same way (or nearly so) humans do them. He made his way to live television and performed professionally with no second takes. Zippy was a dependable regular on the variety shows of Jackie Gleason, Ed Sullivan, Gary Moore and "Howdy Doody", and appeared with hundreds of other TV personalities. Zip became a recognizable character with "Star" status. He was featured in magazines and newspapers, but he was often seen dining in some of the best restaurants, using impeccable manners. He was known by millions. Zippy was loved by children and adults, thousands of whom grew up loving their "Zippy" doll and feeling the nostalgia of a time of innocence. This book allows the reader to become a kid again and read the little-known (and some, until now, unknown) tales of Zippy's exploits. Complete with pictures to reinforce the memories, Zippy the TV Chimp is a biography of one of the most popular animal stars ever. The story is told by one who held Zippy's hand and trained him to be the star he was... Carole, Zippy's Mom.

Book Architecture and Politics in Nigeria

Download or read book Architecture and Politics in Nigeria written by Nnamdi Elleh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, the Nigerian authorities decided to construct a new postcolonial capital called Abuja, and together with several internationally renowned architects these military leaders collaborated to build a city for three million inhabitants. Founded five years after the Civil War with Biafra, which caused around 1.7 million deaths, the city was envisaged as a place where justice would reign and where people from different social, religious, ethnic, and political backgrounds would come together in a peaceful manner and work together to develop their country and its economy. These were all laudable goals, but they ironically mobilized certain forces from around the country in opposition against the Federal Government of Nigeria. The international and modernist style architecture and the fact that the government spent tens of billions of dollars constructing this idealized capital ended up causing more strife and conflict. For groups like Boko Haram, a Nigerian Al-Qaida affiliate organization, and other smaller ethnic groups seeking to have a say in how the country’s oil wealth is spent, Abuja symbolized everything in Nigeria they sought to change. By examining the creation of the modernist national public spaces of Abuja within a broader historical and global context, this book looks at how the successes and the failures of these spaces have affected the citizens of the country and have, in fact, radicalized individuals with these spaces being scene of some of the most important political events and terrorist targets, including bombings and protest rallies. Although focusing on Nigeria’s capital, the study has a wider global implication in that it draws attention to how postcolonial countries that were formed at the turn of the twentieth century are continuously fragmenting and remade by the emergence of new nation states like South Sudan.
