Download or read book Seasonal Affective Disorder and Beyond written by Raymond W. Lam and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 1998 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, Dr. Norman Rosenthal and his colleagues published a seminal research paper on seasonal affective disorder (SAD), unveiling what they were convinced was the healing power of light therapy for people suffering from the illness. Since then, many scientific and medical communities have come to believe that the therapeutic use of light holds great promise for not only SAD, but also a variety of other disorders. This wide-ranging book combines in a single, cohesive reference new, up-to-the-minute findings with a complete summary of the available literature on light therapy. Seventeen contributors, leading clinicians studying the effects and uses of light treatment, discuss the impact of light and light therapy on such conditions as SAD, premenstrual depression, circadian phase sleep disorders, jet lag, shift work disorders, insomnia, and behavioral disturbances. Challenging conventional thinking about light therapy, several contributing authors make convincing cases for its positive effects in treating nonseasonal depression, bulimia nervosa, and other illnesses. Finally, members of a joint task force of the Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms and the American Sleep Disorders Association explore the use of light for treating sleep disorders, as well as a combination of light and melatonin in some cases. Seasonal Affective Disorder and Beyond is an invaluable reference tool for clinicians, researchers, scientists, students, and consumers who want the latest information and opinion about the therapeutic uses of light compiled in one succinct, comprehensive volume.
Download or read book Alzheimer Disease written by Ezio Giacobini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the apoE4 allele is a risk factor or susceptibility gene in late-onset familial and sporadic AD, the mechanism of disease expression may involve metabolic effects that are isoform specific. Isoform-specific interactions of apoE therefore become critical in the mechanism of AD pathogenesis. Detailed characterization of the binding of the apoE isoforms with proteins and peptides relevant to the pathology of the disease may be critical in understanding disease pathogenesis. These critical isoform-specific interactions of apoE may involve interactions with proteins and pep tides in the defining neuropathologic lesions of the disease, the neurofibrillary tangle and senile plaque. Other possible critical isoform-specific interactions include the mechanism of internalization, intracellular trafficking, and subsequent metabolism. In addition, differential post-translational modifications of apoE isoforms may determine differences in metabolism contributing to the pathogenesis of the disease. Oxidation of apoE may confer several isoform-specific, biochemically distinct properties. Since {3A peptide binds apoE in the lipoprotein binding domain of the protein and not in the receptor-binding domain, apoE could target bound {3A4 peptide to neurons via the LRP receptor. Internalization of the apoEI {3A peptide complex into the cell, by the same route as the apoE-containing lipoproteins, would result in incorporation into primary lysosomes and pH dependent dissociation. The demonstration of apoE in the cytoplasm of neurons, with isoform-specific interactions of apoE with the microtubule-binding protein tau demonstrated in vitro, suggest additional, testable hypotheses of disease pathogenesis.
Download or read book Behavior Analysis Around the World written by Claudia Dalbert and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behaviour analysis has tradionally been one of the main areas and main approaches to psychology. It is based on laboratory research and in conceptualizations from distinguished figures of the discipline, such as Skinner, Pavlov, Mach, and even Watson and Thorndike. It has generated a science (the experimental analysis of behaviour), a philosophy (behaviourism), and numerous practical applications (applied behaviour analysis). For several decades it was even considered to be the dominant paradigm in psychology. This special issue contains scientific articles in the main areas of behaviour analysis, both as a laboratory science and as an applied discipline. It covers representative research and applications of behaviour analysis at the beginning of the 21st century. The authors come from countries including the United States, China, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Colombia, Poland, Greece. This special issue is an indication of the international relevance of this area of psychology, and its current state.

Download or read book Biological Psychiatry written by Giorgio Racagni and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological psychology represents a fusion of several scientific disciplines - pharmacology, neurobiology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, anatomy, biophysics and psychology. All are focussed on acquiring an ultimate understanding of the relationships between brain and behaviour. Presented in two volumes are the papers of the 5th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry. Together they represent a significant contribution to complementary advances across a broad front of recently developed research areas. Psychiatric disorders include schizophrenia, affective disorders, the many forms of senile and presenile dementia including Alzheimer's disease, the anxiety disorders, childhood disorders and the variants of eating and sleeping dysfunctions. Each of these illnesses represents a complex interaction of biological, psychological and social variables. The growing number of neuroscientists adopting the biological approach to neuropsychiatric diseases has resulted in a fast expanding body of knowledge regarding brain function and pathology.Further, psychotherapeutic drugs used to treat psychiatric and neurologic disorders play a crucial role in elucidating the biological bases of these diseases. Studying the mechanism of action of these compounds should give us important clues about the normal and pathological functioning of the brain.
